post-graduation (D.A. & M.D.) in Anaesthesiology from J.N. Medical College, AMU Aligarh, in
1986 & 1988 respectively. She was awarded the degree of PhD (Anaesthesiology) in 2009, and
the main domain of the doctoral research was "Surgery Induced Stress". Her current research areas
are: challenging anaesthesia with focus on neuro-anaesthesia, difficult airway, and obstetric
anaesthesia. Dr. Shahla joined the Aligarh Muslim University in 1987 first as Clinical Registrar,
and then was appointed as Lecturer and successively promoted to the post of Professor in
Anaesthesiology for her consistently outstanding performance.
She was the Chairperson of the Department of Anaesthesiology for 3 years w.e.f. 25th July, 2012

dialysis machine).
She has teaching experience of 33 years for UG students and 31yrs for PG students. Dr.
Shahla has 100 research publications to her credit in various reputed journals including
Anaesthesia Analgesia, Anaesthesia, British Journal of Anaesthesia, Neurosciences, JIMA, etc.
She supervised 26 MD & MS theses, and coined 5 new medical terms. Two chapters written in
the “Textbook Manual of Clinics in Anaesthesiology” Chapter 1: “An Approach to Obstetric
Emergencies” and Chapter 2: “Non-Invasive Monitoring” (in press) and many chapters written in
conference souvenirs.
Dr. Shahla worked as Specialist (Anaesthesiology) at the Maternity & Children Hospital,
Holy Makkah (K.S.A) for 2 years, w.e.f. 19.5.1999 to 18.5.2001.
Dr. Shahla lays great emphasis on practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate students,
especially for critically sick patients posted for various surgical operations in elective and
emergency. She laid great efforts in making all the OTs equipped with latest workstations,
multichannel monitors, BIS and Advanced Airway Devices in the operation theatres, and
'Spirobank' to perform spirometry in the OT and OPD during her chairmanship. Dr. Shahla is
Examiner/Expert for MD & DA Examination (Anaesthesiology) Thesis/Examination of
several Universities. Recently she is actively participating in India Health Action Trust
