More than 20 academic staff from the Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering of Ho Chi Minh City University ofTechnology were delegated to visit SoE this year to learn about the best practices of SoE in applying CDIO. The half-day visitincluded lectures and discussions led by SoE staff during which the speakers shared about CDIO and its successfulimplementation at Taylor’s University. They enjoyed the opportunity to view some of the student projects and were impressedwith the quality and range. Overall, the delegates found the visit most useful and shared some of the best CDIO pracricesat their university.

For Year 2 Semester 4 Chemical Engineering (CE) studentsto experience and learn about the health supplementindustry, particularly Brand’s Essence of Chicken, Dr. Rajeshalong with 28 students visited Cerebos (M) Sdn Bhd inBukit Jelutong, Shah Alam. The visit covered the briefingabout the history of Brand’s, company profile, scientificfindings and manufacturing process. The students sawthe production plant from the top-down viewing deck, which is made of glass panel. They also listened to briefintroduction on the manufacturing processes and practicesin the plant given by a skilled employee, Ms. Veronica.Overall, the experience provided CE students with aenriching exposure to the industry.

Dr. Steven has identified a way to engage diverse multiple intelligences and learning domains through interactive iBooks. Throughhis iBook, Dr. Steven revolutionised his engineering design and innovation modules to provide a more efficient and engaginglearning experience for students.

The interactive iBook overcomes the boring textbook as lecturers can design their iBook with notes, quizzes, games andembedded videos for students to access and learn from. The iBook’s effective advanced personalised learning engages severalmultiple intelligences (verbal-linguistic, visual-spatial, bodily-kinesthetic) through its built-in features. This interactive tool thatstores information is an inspiration for students’ creative processes, especially in the engineering design module.

For example, with a single touch on an iPad, students can create their own iBook portfolios and compile project documentation, pictures and videos. Collaborating his individual teaching style with the nature of the module, Dr. Hoo Choon Lih stronglybelieves that iBook can be a better teaching and learning tool than conventional textbooks and notes.

Dr. Steven Hoo Choon Lih emerged as the ExemplaryMeritorious Academic Staff Award Winner– First Cycle 2016
