SUMMARY
Prof. Alaa Yassin is the professor of Hydraulics at the faculty of
engineering, Alexandria University, in Egypt. He was the chairman of the
irrigation engineering and hydraulics department for two terms from 1994 to
1997 and from 2006 to 2008. He is the author and co-author of tens of
papers in the field of hydraulics and hydraulic structures. He supervised and
is referee of tens of M.Sc. and Ph.D. thesis in his field. In 1988 he actively
started his professional consultation activities through his consulting office.
During the past years he was involved in the complete design of tens of
projects in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Oman and Ethiopia. His consultancy
works are in the field of irrigation canals and drains networks, modern
irrigation networks, hydraulic structures, pressure pipelines and pipelines
networks, gravity pipelines systems and sewage networks, and pump
stations. In addition to conducting hydrological studies and design of
protection works against rainfall and flash floods including rockfill dams,
storm water channels, and design of urban storm water drainage systems.
He was appointed as the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation
Advisor for dams and River Nile since July 2014 till March 2016. He was
deeply involved in the negotiations between Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan
regarding the impact of the Ethiopian Dam (GERDP) on downstream
countries.

MINISTR OF WATER RESOURCES AND IRRIGATION ADVISOR FOR
DAMS AND RIVER NILE - from 1st of July 2014 till 23 March 2016.
Responsibilities include:
Advising HE the Minister of Water Recourses and Irrigation on
different issues, subjects and projects related to the River Nile,
development of the Egyptian water resources, and cooperation with
Nile Basin Countries.
Chairman of the technical negotiation committee of the Ministry of
Water Resources and Irrigation for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance
dam.
Chairman of the national committee for planning future actions and
positions regarding the Ethiopian dam.
Involvement and participating in all negotiations meetings between
Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan regarding the impact of the Ethiopian Dam
(GERDP) on downstream countries Egypt and Sudan.
Member of the Egyptian negotiation team for preparing the
Agreement on Declaration of Principles between Egypt, Ethiopia and
Sudan on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam signed by the
leaders of the three countries in March 2015.

A. PROJECTS IN EGYPT
DESIGN OF HYDRAULIC STRUCTURES
1. CLIENT : EL-AAMA COMPANY FOR LAND RECLAMATION
Complete hydraulic and structural design for the following structures:
37 Reinforced concrete bridges
22 Reinforced concrete box culverts
6 Reinforced concrete siphons
35 Reinforced concrete Weirs
The above list of hydraulic structures was constructed in West Nobaria – El-Bustan and
Banger El Sokar areas in northern Egypt.
2. CLIENT : AKARIA EGYPTIAN COMPANY
Complete design of three intakes, each includes a pipe culvert 1.0 m diameter, along
with a booster pump station building and piping works, to lift water from Mesqa 1 –
Branch 2 of Toshka project. Four pumps are erected in each station; the head of each
pump is 50 meter to deliver a discharge of 220 m3/hour. Each pump station shall irrigate
an area of 300 feddans through two PVC pipelines of diameter 400 mm using central
pivot system. The system is protected against water hammer.
3. CLIENT : AKARIA COMPANY
Reviewing the design of three regulators on El-Safe canal, south of Cairo.
4. CLIENT : MINISTRY OF WATER RESOURCES AND IRRIGATION
Complete design of Denshal regulator, Near Damnhour. The regulator design discharge
is 58 m3/sec and consists of 6 openings each of 5.0 m span with radial gates.

5. CLIENT : WADI EL NIL CONTRACTORS & REAL ESTATE COMPANY
Design of culvert intake at Km 60, on sub- branch 1&2, along with two water distribution
basins, lined canal of length 2 Km to irrigate an area of 32000 feddan, and an irrigation
basin with three culvert intakes feeding three canals. The project also includes a culvert
intake for a spillway channel. The Cost is 29 million L.E.
6. CLIENT: EL-AAMA COMPANY FOR LAND RECLAMATION
Hydraulic and structural design of the following structures:
Water distribution basin at km 1.4 on branch 2,
Three spillway channels of total length 14 km,
Twelve drop structures, and
One 60 ton bridge.

DESIGN OF PUMP STATI0NS
CLIENT : BEHERA COMPANY
Complete hydraulic, architecture, structural, mechanical and electrical design of two
pump stations in Kostol area in southern Egypt. Two types of pumps are used. The first
consists of 3 units each of head 35 m and discharge 650 lit/sec, while the second type
consists of 4 units each of head 65 m and discharge 950 l/sec. The pump station will be
used to irrigate an area of 5000 feddans. The cost is 47 million Egyptian pounds and is
currently under construction.
CLIENT : AKARIA EGYPTIAN COMPANY
Complete hydraulic, architecture, structural, mechanical and electrical design of three
pump stations in West of Suez.
Pump Station 1 : To irrigate an area of 2050 feddan, discharge 0.820 m3/sec, head =
12.0 m , No of pumps =3. Diameter of delivery pipeline = 1200 mm of length 450
meters.
Pump Station 2 : To irrigate an area of 3500 feddan, discharge 1.350 m3/sec, head =
13.0 m , No of pumps =4. Diameter of delivery pipeline = 1200 mm of length 450
meters.

Pump Station 1 : To irrigate an area of 2700 feddan, Discharge 1.040 m3/sec, Head =
18.0 m , No of pumps =3. Diameter of delivery pipeline = 1200 mm of length 420
meters.
CLIENT : BEHERA COMPANY
Complete design of two floating pump stations to pump water from Khor Toshka
through two floating pipelines, then through two different pipe networks to supply water
needed for the concrete plants and locations where compaction works are required
along different reaches of the main Sheikh Zayed canal constructed in fill areas. Four
pumps were erected in each station.
CLIENT : SOUTHERN VALLEY DEVELOPMENT COMPANY
Design of pumping station and pressure pipeline of diameter 400 mm, to deliver
irrigation water from Sub branch 1&2 to irrigate the company experimental farm. Three
pumps shall be used, the discharge of each is 200 m3/Hr and head 70 meters.
CLIENT : BEHERA COMPANY
Complete hydraulic, architecture, structural, mechanical and electrical design of two
pump stations in New Bani-Sweif city:
Pump Station 1 : To convey treated drinking water to the city ground tank, discharge
0.50 m3/sec, head = 35.0 m , No of pumps =3. Diameter of delivery pipeline = 350 mm
of length 6000 meters.
Pump Station 2 : To convey treated drinking water from the city ground tank, to the
city pipe network and elevated tank. Discharge 0.150 m3/sec, head = 55.0 m , No of
pumps =3.
DESIGN WORKS FOR THE TOSHKA MEGA PROJEC IN SOUTHERN EGYPT
Toshka project is located in southern Egypt. The objective of the project is to reclaim an
area of 540000 feddans. The implementation of this mega project started in January 1997.
1. CLIENT : EGYPTIAN COMPANY FOR LAND RECLAMATION AND DEVELOPMENT
IN THE SOUTHERN VALLEY
This company has signed a contract with the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation to
implement branch four of Toshka project along with all required hydraulic structures.
Branch 4 is the largest branch within the Toshka project; it is designed to irrigate an area of
200000 feddans. The rate of flow is 116 m3/sec. This branch is lined with concrete and of
total length 80 kilometers. Three large pump stations of total static head of 60 meters shall
be implemented.
Our contract with this company includes the following assignments:

Reviewing the alignment of the branch, designing longitudinal profile and cross-
sections.
Proposing locations and type of hydraulic structures needed, these include : head
and control regulators, pump stations , off takes, weirs, spillways and bridges.
Complete design of all control and head regulators, off takes, bridges and spillways.
Complete design of earth works, canal lining, roads, trees for wind breakers … etc.
Advising and submitting proposals to solve any technical problems during
construction.
The company contract for constructing branch 4 is 540 million Egyptian pounds, while the
contract for the construction of the hydraulic structures is 100 million Egyptian pounds.
2. CLIENT : AKARIA EGYPTIAN COMPANY
This company has signed a contract with the Ministry of water resources and irrigation to
implement branch 1 of Toshka project which will irrigate an area of 120000 feddans. The
rate of flow is 70 m3/sec. This branch is lined with concrete and of length 28 kilometers.
My contract with the Akaria company includes the main following assignments:
Reviewing the alignment of the branch, designing longitudinal profile and cross-
sections.
Proposing locations and type of hydraulic structures needed, these include: head and
control regulators, pump stations, off takes, weirs, and bridges.
Complete design of earth works, canal lining, roads, trees for wind breakers … etc.
Advising and submitting proposals to solve any technical problems during
construction.
DESIGN OF PRESSURE PIPELINES & PIPELINES NETWORKS
CLIENT FOR THE NEXT FIVE PROJECTS: BEHERA COMPANY
1. EL – RAYAN PRESSURE PIPELINE
Complete hydraulic and structural design of a steel pressure pipeline including all required
valves, valves chambers, and anti water hammer protection system. The pipeline is of
length 15 Km , diameter 1650 mm to convey irrigation water from El- Rayan lake to a new
agricultural area of an area 5000 feddans. The project includes a floating pump station, and
floating pipeline.
2. KOSTOL AND ADENDAN LAND RECLAMATION PROJECT IN SOUTHERN EGYP.
Complete hydraulic and structural design of:
Floating pumping station and floating pipelines to lift water from Lake Nasser.
Steel pressure pipeline, of length 3 Km, diameter 1600 mm.

Pumping station to convey water to a pressurized pipe networks.
Two pressurized steel pipeline networks to irrigate an area of 5000 feddan. The
pipeline networks include all required valves, valve chambers, accessories and
protection against water hammer.
The area served by the first network is 1540 feddan, the discharge is 1232 liter/sec
and the required head is 40 meters. Meanwhile, the area served by the second
network is 3460 feddan, the discharge is 2768 liter/sec and the required head is 66
meters. The total length of pipelines for the networks is 52 kilometers of diameters
from 150 mm to 1650 mm.
The area is divided into 250 farms, each of area 20 feddans, and shall be irrigated by
drip irrigation where a booster pump is used.
The project includes also road and drainage network.
The project is located on Lake Nasser, 30 Km south of Abo Sembel City in
southern Egypt.
3. EL-SALAM LAND RECLAMATION PROJECT – ABO SEMBEL – SOUTHERN
EGYPT
Complete hydraulic and structural design of a floating pumping station and floating
pipeline to lift water from Lake Nasser to a steel pressure pipeline, of length 1.2 Km,
diameter 1000 mm to irrigate an area of 2500 feddans.
Complete hydraulic and structural design of a steel pipe siphon of diameter 1800 mm,
thickness 12 mm, and length 1500 meters.
Complete hydraulic and structural design of a steel pressure pipeline of 200 mm
diameter and length 6 Km to convey drinking water to the project village.
4. NEW BANI-SWEIF CITY DRINKING WATER PIPELINE
Complete hydraulic and structural design of a steel pressure pipeline. The project
includes all required valves, valve chambers, accessories and protection against
water hammer.
The pipeline is of length 6 Km, of diameter 350 mm to convey treated drinking water
to the New Bani-sweif city, 125 Km south of Cairo.
5 . RAMSIS AREA PIPELINES
Four pipelines of different diameters ranging from 900 mm to 1200 mm. Total length is 8
km. Pipelines conveys irrigation water to a newly reclaimed agricultural land in Ramsis
area, El-Sharkeia Governorate.

IN THE FIELD OF ON- FARM DESIGN
1. CLIENT : BEHERA COMPANY
Complete planning and detailed design of an experimental farm of an area of 1000 feddans
on the command area of branch 4 – Toshka project.
The farm shall be irrigated by water lifted from Toshka Depression. Three different
methods of irrigation shall be applied: drip, sprinkler, and central pivots.
My contract includes complete hydraulic and structural design of the following main works:
Floating pump station to lift water from Toshka Depression.
Floating steel pipeline of length 550 meters and diameter 600 mm.
Conveyance channel of length 2 kilometers
Architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical design of pump stations where 7
pumps are erected to supply irrigation water to the PVC irrigation pipe network.
Five different PVC pipe networks to feed different areas to be irrigated by drip,
sprinkler, and central pivots.
On Farm design for different crops, fruit trees including grapes, citrus, vegetables
…etc considering drip and sprinkler irrigation systems.
Design of vegetative windbreaks.
Suitability, salinity, and soil maps were produced. The estimated cost of the
project is 15 Million Egyptian pounds.
2. CLIENT: SOUTHERN VALLEY DEVELOPMENT COMPANY
Complete planning and detailed design to reclaim and irrigate an area of 15000 feddan.
Irrigation water shall be taken from two off takes located at Km 60 on Sub branch 1-2, and
from Km 7.200 on branch 2.
My contract includes complete hydraulic, structural and architectural design of the following
main works:
Planning the area considering small farms each of area 40 feddans (410 m x 410 m).
Each farm shall be divided into four equal areas. Each 10 feddan shall be owned and
operated by an individual university graduate. Drip irrigation shall be used to irrigate
half the area and sprinkler irrigation shall be applied to irrigate the other half.
Complete design of the irrigation and drainage channels networks.
Complete design of all required water structures including control structures, pump
stations, weirs, off takes, tail escapes and bridges.
Design of the drip and sprinkler irrigation networks and the booster pumping facilities.
Design of vegetative windbreaks.

Design of the road network.
Complete design of the villages required including housing, market place, clinics,
mosques, compact water and sewage treatment facilities, drinking water network,
sewage networks, electrical networks..etc.
The estimated cost of the project is 225 million Egyptian pounds.
IN THE FIELD OF DESIGN OF HOUSING FACILITIES
1. CLIENT : BEHERA COMPANY
Complete planning and design of the housing compound for the Ministry of Water
Recourses and Irrigation engineers working in Toshka Project. The area of the compound
is 300 feddans (120 hectare) and is located at the intersection of the Aswan – Abo Sembel
road with the road to the main Toshka pumping station. The project includes:
Site planning and landscape considering future expansion.
Complete architecture and structural design of 44 Vilas of three different modules, the
area of each ranging from 120 to 400 square meters, in addition to two administrative
buildings the area of each is 1000 square meters.
Design of water and sewage treatment plants
Design of drinking water network, Sewage network, road network, Electrical and
telephone networks irrigation network for the green areas.
B. PROJECT IN ETHIOPIA
Consultancy services submitted to “Water Works Design & Supervision Works
Enterprise”, Ministry of Water Resources, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Responsibilities includes the design review of two major irrigation projects,
1. Tendaho Dam Irrigation Project (to irrigate an area of 60000 hectare) and,
2. Kessem Dam Irrigation Project (to irrigate an area of 30000 hectare).
The contract agreement included:
Review the design of different elements of the dams, the main, primary, secondary, and
tertiary canals and drainage networks. The revision work included proposing modifications
to obtain sound and economical design, minimizing fill quantities, and at the same time
satisfying the required water levels at the off takes of all primary canals in the irrigation
network. This process required modifications of the irrigation and drainage networks in
several areas and introducing other alternative designs. The design of longitudinal profiles
and cross sections of all canals and drains, type of canal lining, hydraulic structures
including regulators, bridges, weirs, falls, channel crossings, and off takes were also
reviewed and checked.

C. PROJECTS IN THE KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA
1. FLOOD CONTROL AT WADI QAWS AND THE PROTECTION WORKS FOR EAST
JEDDAH
The project include the construction of:
Three rockfill dams,
Two lined storm water channels of total length 4750 m, and
Pipe culvert 2000 mm diameter of length 4470 m to drain storm water from dam
reservoir and streets to the sea.
Our responsibilities include reviewing the project specifications, hydrological,
hydraulic, geotechnical, and structural designs for all elements of the project. The
project cost is 179 million SR.
2. FLOOD CONTROL AT WADI METHWAB AND WADI GULAIL AND THE
PROTECTION WORKS FOR EAST JEDDAH
The project includes the construction of:
Three rockfill dams,
Seven lined storm water channels of total length 12500 m,
Earthen channel of length 825 m, and
Pipe culvert 1300 mm diameter of length 2880 m to drain storm water from dam
reservoir and streets to the sea.
Our responsibilities include reviewing the project specifications, hydrological,
hydraulic, geotechnical, and structural designs for all elements of the project. The
project cost is 204 million SR.
3. PROTECTION OF TWO GOVERNOARTES AGAINST RAINFALL AND FLOODING
IN SAUDI ARABIA
The protection works cover two governorates of El-Zulfy and El- Ghat, both in Riyadh
sector, located 240 km north of the capital city of Riyadh. The protected areas
include 110 km of urban areas, rural areas, and 85 villages. The design works
include rainfall, topographical studies and preparation of digital elevation model for
the area. Comprehensive Hydrological studies are carried out for all catchment areas
and hydrographs at key locations are determined. Modern softwares are used such
as Watershed Modeling System – WMS, Global Mapper, ArcGIS Desktop.
Hydraulic and structural design is conducted for the required protection works
including dams, weirs, storm water channels, drop structures..etc. Also hydrological
and hydraulic design of urban storm water drainage system for two cities is also

carried out. Preparation of complete tender documents is part of the contract.
4. DESIGN OF PRESSURE PIPELINE OF LENGTH 14 KM TO CONVEY TREATED
WATER.
The project includes the complete design of a pressure pipeline of length 14 km to
convey treated water from Khomra sewage treated plant to Breman sewage
treatment plant. The new pipeline is connected to an existing pipeline of length 23
km. The project includes the design of two pump stations of head 82 and 132 meters
respectively. Water hammer analysis is carried out to protect the pump stations and
pipelines.
5. DESIGN OF ROCKFILL DAM AT THE ENTRANCE OF STORM WATER
CHANNEL NO. (6) IN EASTERN JEDDAH.
Our responsibilities include complete hydrological, hydraulic, geotechnical, and
structural designs for all elements of the project and preparing BOQ and project
specifications. The project cost is 21 million SR.
D. PROTECTION OF ROADS AGAINIST RAINFALL AND FLOODS IN
THE SULTANATE OF OMAN
Responsibilities include design review of roads and highway projects and the design of
hydraulic structures required for the protection against rainfall and flash floods including
bridges, culverts, Irish crossings and bridges, and storm water channels. Total cost of
projects 500 million US $.
E. PROJECTS IN LIBYA
1. Hydraulic & structural design and preparation of BOQ and technical specifications for
the construction of pipeline network including main, secondary and distributor pipelines
of total length of 60 km to feed 346 farms located near Sirt city with irrigation water. The
source of water is the Great man made river. Design works include 15000 m3 RC
