Polyamide 6.6 propertiesPolyamides are thermoplastic synthetic materials that can be molded by heating without providing chemical decomposition or other changes in their properties. They are also known as Nylon, name used by Dupont, who synthesized the first polyamide in 1935 by the chemist Wallace Hume Carothers.Polyamide 6.6 has features that allow the manufacture of cable ties and fasteners with high tensile strength, mechanical strength; and desirable flexibility and surface hardness. It is the most common polyamide in the manufacture of FRONTEC cable ties and fasteners, because its characteristics are suitable for a high range of applications.PA 6.6 molecules are composed of two basic units with six carbon atoms in each of them:
Polyamide 4.6 propertiesPolyamide 4.6 has a high heat resistance without the need for adding special additives. It is used in the manufacture of FRONTEC cable ties and fasteners for use in environments with temperatures up to 135 °C with peaks up to 150 °C.PA 4.6 molecules are composed of two basic units with four carbon atoms in one of them and six in the other:
Moisture index in polyamidesThe polyamides are hygroscopic materials, they absorb and release water. The moisture level of the cable ties is very important, because it affects their flexibility and their tensile strength.Polyamide 6.6 stabilizes its moisture index around 2.5% when subjected to a controlledatmosphere of 23 °C and 50% relative air humidity. The time required for the cable ties to acquire this moisture content ranges from 7 to 50 days depending on the dimensions of the piece. When the cable ties are used, the ideal is that its moisture content is around 2.5%.Once applied, once the trigger will be static in the grooves of the cable tie body, the changes in moisture index will not cause significant changes in the mechanical properties of the parts.FRONTEC cable ties and fasteners are packed in suitable plastic bags and are only sold in themarket when its moisture index is around 2.5%. For this reason, it is recommended that products are kept in their original packages and used as soon as the packages are open.It is also recommended that, during the storage of cable ties and fasteners, the products do not suffer exposure to sun rays or are stored near heat sources. The ideal storage should be at 23 ° C with relative air humidity of 50%.
Cable ties with protection againstultraviolet rays (UV)
The cable ties in the natural color (page 12) are not suitable for applications with exposure to sunlight for long periods of time. The cable ties in black (page 12) are doped with carbon black and, therefore, have a goodresistance to ultraviolet rays (UV). Experience has shown good performance in sun exposureof up to 3 years. The cable ties with UV protection (page 13) are doped with special components that providegreater resistance to weathering and ultraviolet rays (UV), being indicated for applicationsexposed to sunlight for higher time. They are tested according to the ASTM G155:13 standards, that simulates a condition ofapproximately 10 years exposure to weather. The cable tie features (tensile strength, color, flexibility and texture) should remain unchanged after subjected to this test.To identify whether a cable tie in black has UV resistance or not, a faster and simpler assaycan be done, consisting in tuning a part of the cable tie tape (between 0.2 and 0.3 mm) andlook to the light through this area. The cable tie with UV protection does not allow light topass through and the cable tie without UV protection is a little t ranslucent in tuned area.

Technical Information
For proper preservation of thecable tie, it is recommended tostorage at a temperature between 10 and 40 °C and relative air humidity between 30% and 70%.
The cable tie must be used assoon as possible after openingthe packaging (plastic bag) if the humidity is below 30%.
Avoid keeping the cable tie near heat sources, as this maychange the humidity of cableties and its features.
Do not place or expose the cable ties in the ultraviolet (UV) rays, as they may change their structure, making them fragile.
Temperature resistanceThe polyamides used for manufacturing cable ties are sensitive to high or low temperatures.Exposure to very high or low temperatures can break the molecular chain, causing low mechanical strength, fragility and sensitivity to vibration. The maximum temperature recommended for the installation of Polyamide 6.6 cable tie is 60 °C, however the maximum temperature of continuous use is 85 ºC.The minimum temperature for the use of polyamide 6.6 cable ties is -40 °C. However, when they are applied, it is recommended that the temperature is above -10 °C.When the cable ties are used in high temperature regime, it is recommended the use of cable ties produced with heat-stabilized polyamide 6.6 (PA 6.6 HS) or produced from polyamide 4.6.
FlammabilityThe most popular standard for assessing the behavior of polymers against the flame is the UL 94 (Underwriters Laboratories). This test classifies the material based on the speed of combustion, the flame extinction time and the trend of flame propagation by dripping.Classification begins with the HB class, lower level, which identifies the material as low burning rate.V2, V1 and V0 classes identify materials as self-extinguishing.
HB (horizontal burning)- According to UL 94, the material is classified as HB, considering two test samples:• Combustion of 38.1 mm/in for a 3.2 mm thick specimen.
• Combustion of 63.5 mm/ min for a <3.2 mm thick specimen.
V2 (vertical burning) - The flame is extinguished within 30 seconds with dripping.
V1 (vertical burning) - The flame is extinguished within 30 seconds without dripping.
V0 (vertical burning) - The flame is extinguished within 10 seconds without dripping.
Traction resistanceAll cable ties lots produced by FRONTEC are tested by sampling. The results are available in reports containing the values obtained in each test. The minimum breakdown voltage is the load that a cable tie must support without the occurrence of its break.
TraceabilityAll products manufactured by FRONTEC have individual traceability for production batch, covering the various stages of the production process with the following information:
• Lot of raw materials (including the vendor’s report);• Used machine;• Operator and time of manufacture;• Injection parameters used in the manufacture;• Data from the gravimetric distributor informing the dosages of the raw material components;• Records with date and time of testing, verification, inspection, wastes, operators, setup and stops in the production;• Release report issued by the quality sector;• Storage location in stock;• Data related to the separation and billing (who separated the order, date, invoice number, customer etc.).
The chart above represents the traction resistance test performed on 10 samples of the cable tieF7040.The minimum break voltage expected is 54.4 kgf and the result showed values close to 80 kgf (the result was 47% higher than specified in the catalog).
Cable ties preservation
The mandrel opens withconstant speed.
The load at which the cable tiebreaks down is measured andrecorded in software thatprovides the test data in chartsas shown on the next page.
The cable tie is fixed on amandrel with a diameterdefined for each cable tiemodel.

Fasteners without adhesivesThese fasteners were developed for binding wires, cables and electrical harnesses in different surfaces by screws or rivets, with the use of a conventional cable tie.
PlugsThis fastener model is designed to be used with a conventional cable tie with width up to 4.8 mm.It has the body formed by parallel blades, which increases the fixing quality and performance, as they require low to high power for placement and extraction. It is very easy for tying electrical harnesses and other components to plates (flat hole) or steel blocks (threaded hole).
FRONTEC also offers the plugs with cable ties already placed.Refer to item: “Plug assembled with cable tie (FP)”, page 22.
FRONTEC also provides the bushing with the cable tie.Refer to item: “Bushing with cable tie”, page 27.
* Can be applied with 6 mm screw/bushing and supports up to 32 kgf.* Can be applied with 6 to 8 mm screw/bushing and supports up to 50 kgf.
BushingThis product speeds up the installation of wires, cables, hoses and pipes in concrete, solid brick or wood walls. The bushing is inserted into the hole with a hammer, preferably a rubber hammer, and does not require screw fixation. The bushing provides support for mooring by conventional cable ties. When the bushing is exposed to sunlight, it is recommended the use of cable ties with UV protection (page 13).
Clip for plates attachmentThis clip used with a conventional cable tie, allows a quick, easy and economic attachment in plates, of wires and cables. Without using screws or rivets.
