Advantages of the EKONOR Process Ekonor is a process specially developed for pipe welding. The Extended Concept for Orbital Welding of Pipe Joints (EKONOR) is ideally suited for rotating or fixed pipe/pipe or pipe/formed part joints. The user is assured of the highest quality standards, makes the best use of potential savings, augments cost-effectiveness and so gains competitive advantage. The Ekonor process comprises in total four components which may be used individually or together as a system solution, as required:
Part Seam Welding - Avoids the critical vertical-down weld area by splitting into two overlapping weld seams - Welding of wall thicknesses up to 5 mm without edge preparation and filler metals - Safe detection of linear misalignment and different root heights - Higher deposition rate in multi-pass welding
Internal Clamping Device - Radial and axial restraint of the pipe ends allows simple centring and fixing of the pipes,
better closing of air gaps and removes the need for tacking beforehand - Clamping, forming and welding in a single step - Optimal root protection, so keeping roots free of tempering discoloration - Evident reduction of set-up times through the option of combining with a rotating device - Available for pipe diameters from ND 25 to ND 400 - Pneumatic or hydraulic force transmission enables all-round compression of the pipe with
wall thicknesses up to 15 mm
Integrated Camera - For surveillance of the weld root immediately following welding - For continuous quality control and video documentation - Can be used with a pipe diameters down to ND 80
Integrated Cooling Using Forming Gas The seam is cooled using the forming gas. It is well-known that in large quantities, gases are supplied in liquid form at very low temperatures in storage tanks. Here the gas, e.g. argon, is present in the tank at a temperature of approx. –186 °C. The development is in the use of this coldness for the cooling process. In this, gaseous argon is applied to the side of the root through a control system, with a regulated temperature in the range of 0- -100 °C. The advantages are:
• Maintains the prescribed intermediate storage temperatures without waiting times • Improves corrosion resistance by minimising the heat affected zone and prevents
tempering discoloration
