Product information

For decades, Danfoss has been theworld’s leading manufacturer of radiatorvalves and radiator thermostats. Danfossinvented the radiator thermostat back in1943 and later developed it.

Today, radiators are often manufacturedwith integrated valves (i.e. built-in valves),which are built into the radiator at the timeof manufacture, the radiator thermostatbeing fitted on site by the installer. Radia-

Application tors with integrated valves are known as“valve radiators” or “compact radiators”.

As an alternative to the well-establishedRA-N and RA-U valves, Danfoss has de-veloped integrated valves for use with“valve radiators”. Danfoss integratedvalves fit all “valve radiators” and guaran-tee the same efficient operation as otherDanfoss valves.

Processing by theradiator manufacturer

In principle, the “valve radiator” consistsof: A heating surface made of plates or

pipes. A welded-on fitting, in which the inte-

grated valve is fitted. An integrated valve.

The “valve radiator” is subsequentlyequipped with a radiator thermostat, oncethe heating installation is complete.

a) Valve radiator with valve insert b) Valve radiator with integrated valve

The hydraulic parts of a “valve radiator”can be designed in two ways:a) Valve insert: In this case the valve seat

is an integral part of the fitting. This so-lution requires very tight tolerances inthe manufacturing and placing of thefitting, since the valve seat fitting andthe insert will often come from two dif-ferent manufacturers.

b) Integrated valve: The valve seat is anintegrated part of the integrated valve. The responsibility for the wholehydaulic solution thus rests with thevalve manufacturer.Integrated valves provide maximumassurance of the reliable operation of“valve radiators”. That is why Danfosshas decided to manufacture integratedvalves rather than valve inserts.

Fittings The fitting has been welded or solderedinto the radiator. It consists of three parts: valve fitting for integrated valve, connection fittings for pipe connections, riser pipes, connecting the valve and

connection fittings.

All Danfoss integrated valves are sup-plied with built-in presetting feature.

The valve fitting is placed so as to allowthe integrated valve to be screwed intothe end of the radiator.

The connection fitting has been designedfor two-pipe operation with floor connec-tion (for one-pipe operation and wall con-nection, see p. 4).

Note: Danfoss matches the design of itsintegrated valves with the different fittingsused by radiator manufacturers.

Construction

Integrated valves are normally installedduring the manufacturing of “valve radia-tors”. That is why the installation processhas to be automatic or semi-automatic.Danfoss will assist radiator manufacturerswith advice on installation techniques.

Because of the thermal load limit of thesealants (120° C), the valves should notbe installed until the radiators have beenpowder-lacquered.

The integrated valve should be tightened

into the fitting using a torque of 30 Nm(±10%).

A cap is provided to protect the integratedvalve against damage in transit and duringthe construction phase.

One-pipe and two-pipeinstallations

Two-pipe installationOne-pipe installation

Today, most “valve radiators” are madefor two-pipe operation as standard. Con-version to one-pipe operation is effectedby installing special bypass unions. Theseunions also make it possible to drain anddisconnect the radiators from the system.

By mounting the relevant unions on the fit-tings, it is possible to choose either wall orfloor connection.

• One-pipe installationIn a one-pipe installation, there is nor-mally a demand for high flow ratesthrough the radiators, whilst the differen-tial pressure is low. This is why the k

vvalues should be relatively high (approx.0.7-0.8). An integrated valve type013G0370 (RA-N) with pre-setting "N"must be mounted. The distribution of

water between radiator and bypass canbe set on the bypass union in accord-ance with the pipe network calculations. In this situation the pre-set position isalways ‘N’.

• Two-pipe installationIn a two-pipe installation, the k

v values

should be pre-set for each radiator inaccordance with the pipe network cal-culations. Values are set easily andsimply by means of the pre-setting ringon the valves.Danfoss is able to offer two capacityranges for two-pipe installations:a) A range for large volume flows (N-valves).b) A range for small volume flows, e.g.district heating installations with bigtemperature differences (U-valves).

1) kv values indicate the flow volume (Q) in m3/h at a pressure loss (p) across the valve of 1 bar. kv = Q p. At setting N, the kv value inaccordance with EN 215-1 can be stated as Xp = 2 K. At lower preset values, Xp is lowered to setting 1, where Xp = 0.5 K. The kv valuesindicate the valve capacity, when the valve is fully open.

2) The max. differential pressure is the maximum recommended differential pressure that the valve should be exposed to if satisfactoryregulation is to be ensured. To obtain low-noise operation, it is recommended to choose pumps that match system pressure losses. Experi-ence indicates that in most two-pipe installations a differential pressure across the valves of 0.05-0.2 bar is sufficient. The differentialpressure can be reduced by using a Danfoss differential pressure regulator.

3) When using a RAW radiator thermostat, the P-Band will be increased by factor 1.6. RAW at setting “N” aligns manufacturers’ information ofEN 215.

The setting values can be read directly from the table above:

Q (m3/h)kv = p (bar)

Because of the good regulating feature ofthe RA 2000 thermostat, we recommendthat the valves be sized with a p-band ofbetween 0.5 and 2 K.

The two integrated valves (013G0370and 013G0371) have k

v values and re-

commended setting ranges which partlyoverlap.

Presettingrange

The dimensioned presetting values of theintegrated valves of types RA-N and RA-U, can be adjusted easily and accuratelywithout the use of tools (factory setting:N):

Remove the protective cap of theradiator thermostat.

Find the reference mark. Turn the setting ring until the desired

presetting aligns with the referencemark.

Control that the setting is correct.

The presetting is controlled directlywithout the use of equipment. Afterinstallation in the radiator, the reference

mark of the valve will not always bepositioned in the same place.

Presettings can be selected within therange of 1 to 7 steps. At “N” setting thevalve is fully open. Setting in the shadedareas of the drawing should be avoided. Ina one-pipe installation, the “N” settingmust be used.

For Danfoss elements RA 2000 and RAW,a theft protection device is available; thisprovides added security against unwantedadjustment of the preset values.

Design work Different standard software programmescan be used for calculating pipe net-works. These programmes are updatedregularly as new information is releasedby the radiator manufacturers. The pro-grammes are not sold by Danfoss.

By means of software or calculations ofpipe networks, it is possible to find thenecessary preset values for the inte-grated valves in two-pipe installations. Ina one-pipe installation, software or calcu-

lation can be used to find the necessaryoversize of radiators and to calculate thewater supply share to be assigned to theindividual radiator.

Since many programmes also containdimensioning data for differential pressureregulators and volume regulators, theproject manager can include all necessaryregulation components in the same calcu-lation.

Installation work on site Installation work is limited to attachingand adjusting the radiator, installing anyunions or clamping ring fittings, presettingthe valve and installing the sensor.

It is extremely easy to preset the waterflow with a Danfoss integrated valve. It re-quires no tools, is easy to read and canbe checked at any time by the projectmanager and site manager.

In the ‘N’ position the presetting of the

valve is cancelled. This position can beused if the installation is to be flushed.

In the case of one-pipe installations, at-tention should be paid to the fact that thebypass unions contain parts to preventunwanted heat emission.

Installation instructions for Danfoss radia-tor thermostats are printed on the pack-aging.

Unwanted heat emis-sion in one-pipe instal-lation

When the valve is closed, the radiator canbe heated by heat conduction from theconnection fitting, through which there is aconstant flow. The extent of such un-wanted heat emission depends on the de-

sign of the fitting, the flow temperatureand the volume flow. Unwanted heatemission can be reduced in such installa-tions, but not completely eliminated.

Sound measurements Under certain conditions, a heating instal-lation can generate noise which can be-come a nuisance. The most important factors in the forma-tion of such noise are the pipe system, theflow volume, the differential pressure, thehydraulics of the valve, the temperatureconditions and - not least - the type of ra-diator in use.

Danfoss carries out noise measurementson integrated valves installed in the radia-tor manufacturer’s products as part of anongoing cooperation with the manufac-turer.To prevent noise from the water flow thedifferential pressure should not exceed0.2 bar.

ISO quality inspection Danfoss has held an ISO 9000 certificatefor many years. ISO certification ensuresthat development, design and construction

are carried out in accordance with thequality requirements contained in ISO9001 and 9002. Final inspection is carriedout in accordance with ISO 9003.
