Versatile Dual Purpose Media Feed System

The LEJ-640 supports printing on rolls up to 64” wide or rigid stocks including popular 4’ x 8’ boards up to 1/2” (13 mm) thick and up to 26 lbs. (12 kg) in weight. The included folding tables can be easily attached to the printer for printing on rigid substrates or detached and folded for storage. Designed for simplicity and ease-of-use, users can switch from one configuration to the other in seconds. This versatility and ease-of-use make the LEJ-640 a perfect choice for users with limited space or who are constantly changing substrates.

Page 3: Product Information Guide - Denco Sales

The LEC-540 comes with a front mounted two-way sliding table and a horizontally mounted rear cover to provide support for semi-rigid stocks such as card stocks and polycarbonate sheets up to 0.039” (1mm) thick. The table can be retracted to open up a gap between the table and the printer platen, allowing for a roll or a flexible media to be fed as a regular roll-to-roll printer. This dual purpose design provides maximum flexibility and compatibility with a wide variety of sheet or roll substrates. The LEC-330 comes with a sheet-friendly ventilation hood that allows semi-rigid stocks to be fed straight through its opening.

Both LEJ-640 and LEC-540 use the proven heavy-duty media holder system available on Roland VersaArt RS printers and VersaCAMM VS printer/cutters. This system prevents skewing and possible misfeeds to ensure stable media feeding even for long print runs. This system handles rolls weighing up to 88 lbs. (40 kg) on LEJ-640 and 66 lbs. (30 kg) on LEC-540 and up to 8.3” (210 mm) in diameter for both printers. The LEC-330 comes with the popular media flange system for rolls weighing up to 44 lbs. (20 kg) and up to 7.1” (180 mm) in diameter.

Innovative Rigid Media Support and Head Protection System (LEJ-640 only)

The LEJ-640 includes two removable media alignment guides that simplify the loading and alignment of rigid boards. Boards can be easily loaded straight simply by pushing it forward until its front edge hits the guides. Once the media is loaded, all that is required of the user is to enter the thickness of the board and press SETUP. During media setup, the printer scans the media size and checks for an improper media thickness setting, or the presence of media guides. The printer will stop the operation and warn the user if the thickness specified is too small, or a media guide was left on the printer, so there is virtually no risk of damaging the print head by mistake.

Page 4: Product Information Guide - Denco Sales

The LEJ-640 supports three head height (distance of head from the print surface) settings: Low (1.4mm), Medium (2.2 mm) and High (3.2 mm). When printing, the print heads move automatically to the specified offset plus the media thickness that was specified. For added piece of mind, the print head moves to its highest position when performing cleaning or sheet cut operations to protect the print head from possible collisions.

The LEJ-640 boasts new grit rollers designed for precise feeding of rigid stocks without compromising normal roll-to-roll operation. The new grit rollers are shaped with coarser and sharper teeth for better gripping on rigid substrates. In addition, the pinch rollers’ down pressure has been optimized to minimize pressure marks on the surface of media. These enhancements ensure that the LEJ-640 is capable of producing the same special effects with clear coat on rigid substrates with virtually identical accuracy to the LEC series.

It is very common for rigid stocks to warp as a result of handling, transportation or storage conditions. Warped boards can cause a number of problems including print quality issues and scratch marks caused by the print heads touching the surface. This may typically result in unacceptable output quality or, in the worst case, cause permanent damage to the print head costing owners thousands of dollars in repairs and down time. The LEJ-640 incorporates a Media Hold Down Bar system that pushes the boards down and keeps the printable area flat

1. This system keeps the distance of the print head

even across the width of the media ensuring consistent print quality and reduces the risk of head collision.

State-of-the-Art UV LED Curing System

The VersaUV series includes two solid state UV LED lamps that offer many advantages over conventional UV lamps.

- Longer life – the LED lamps on the VersaUV series last up to 10,000 hours, 10 times longer than

conventional UV lamps.

- Low heat and highly energy-efficient – while conventional UV lamps can reach temperatures as high as

1500°F (800°C), LED lamps are extremely energy-efficient and generate very little heat. This virtually

eliminates all risks associated with high heat, such as damage to the substrate and head crashes caused by

media deformation.

1 The Media Hold Down Bar may not be able to flatten severely warped boards.

Thickness can be entered in millimeters or inches Media Alignment Guides

Page 5: Product Information Guide - Denco Sales

- Instant On/Off – LED lamps can be turned on and off instantly and are ready to use immediately after the

printer is turned on. Conventional curing systems may take several minutes to reach the nominal output

level and require complex, noisy and failure-prone shutter systems to protect the substrate and the

head’s capping system from exposure to heat and UV radiation.

The LEJ-640 uses the same dual configuration LED curing system from the LEC-540 that is optimized for wide substrates and allows the choice of gloss or matte finishing options with clear coat. For normal printing or matte finish, both lamps are used in an inline curing configuration. This configuration cures the ink droplets instantly to form a rough surface that scatters light. When gloss finish is selected, the left lamp moves forward and only this lamp is used for curing delaying the curing. This delayed curing configuration allows droplets of clear coat to spread and form a smooth surface that reflects the light evenly.

The LED lamps on the LEC-330 are fixed and arranged in staggered configuration.

Advanced ECO-UV Inks2

ECO-UV ink was especially formulated for the VersaUV family of printer and printer/cutters to deliver high color density and wide gamut for exceptional images print after print. ECO-UV ink is instant-drying and flexible, producing prints that can be stretched and applied around curved surfaces and edges without cracking. Clear coat can produce an unprecedented high gloss finish and improve scratch and chemical resistance and outdoor durability. ECO-UV ink is perfect for indoor applications such as labels, packaging, POP and exhibit displays. In outdoor applications, ECO-UV ink lasts up to two years when flooded with clear coat and up to 6 months unprotected.

Unsurpassed Media Compatibility

ECO-UV ink adheres to a wide range of treated and untreated substrates, including Banner, Canvas, PVC, PET, BOPP, Polypropylene, metallic, foils, paper, shrink films, foam boards, Sintra, acrylic and much more, with exceptional image quality.

The low heat UV LED lamps allow for printing on heat-sensitive media such as PVC, shrink films, pressure sensitive media and paper stocks with no risk of damaging the substrate.

The ingenious combination of advanced ECO-UV inks with low heat state-of-the-art UV LED lamps enables VersaUV printers and printer/cutters to print on virtually any substrate delivering an unprecedented range of media compatibility and print quality.

Flexible Ink Configuration Options for Unmatched Versatility

All VersaUV models support three ink configurations3 selectable at installation: CMYK + White + Clear coat, CMYK +

dual White and CMYK + dual Clear Coat.

The most versatile ink configuration, CMYK + White + Clear Coat can be used for a wide range of applications, including packaging prototypes, labels, offset proofs with spot varnish, POP, window graphics, exhibit displays and unique textured graphics. White ink is ideal for producing rich, dense color graphics on clear and metallic substrates. Clear Coat can be used as a spot gloss or matte highlights, to coat the entire image for a high-gloss finish, or overprinted for simulating embossing and other three-dimensional textures.

Ideal for applications that require high opacity white, the CMYK + dual White

4 mode achieves opacities up to 1.5 times higher

than the single white configuration. This translates into a significant improvement in productivity and simpler workflow since no overprinting or multiple file setups are required in order to achieve higher white opacity.

2 Room ventilation and Roland approved air filtration system are required. Please consult the MSDS for more guidance on the

proper use of ECO-UV inks. 3 The ink configuration MUST be selected during the initial installation and cannot be changed once the lines have been filled

with ink. Please consult the Setup Guide on how to select the right ink mode. 4 The amount of ink discharged by the Ink Circulation System can be higher with this ink configuration as both lines are

monitored for consumption and discharged if any single line meets the discharge criteria.

Page 7: Product Information Guide - Denco Sales

The CMYK + dual Clear mode can build up three-dimensional textures twice as fast as the normal ink mode and can produce more dramatic effects with larger reliefs. This ink configuration is also perfect for users that do not require white ink printing since the ink circulation system and the ink discharge cycles are completely disabled resulting in zero white ink waste.

Print Modes Sample applications

Patent-Pending Automatic Ink Circulation System

It is a well-known fact that white ink contains heavy pigments that can settle over time, decreasing the density of white output and affecting the nozzles if not purged from the system periodically. This innovative patent-pending system circulates the white and clear

5 inks to prevent the settling of pigments in the lines. In addition, this system

controls the discharge of white ink and minimizes waste by monitoring white ink usage and the types of jobs that are printed. An ink discharge cycle will not be executed unless all of the following conditions are met: (1) the printer receives a job with white data, (2) eight hours or more have passed since the last ink discharge, (3) less than 7.5 ml of white ink has been consumed during this period. Operators can further optimize the ink usage by scheduling the production of jobs with white data within this eight-hour window. The table on the following page summarizes the amount of ink that is purged when an ink discharge cycle is executed.

5 Although clear ink does not contain pigments to settle, the clear line is also circulated. This is due to the printer’s design

which supports dual white ink.

Page 8: Product Information Guide - Denco Sales

Elapsed time from previous ink discharge cycle

Total Amount of Ink Discharged (White and Clear combined)

0 to 8 hours 0 ml

More than 8 hours 15 ml

By preventing unnecessary discharges and minimizing the amount of ink that is subject to settling, this automated system significantly reduces ink waste and virtually eliminates all manual white ink maintenance procedures. Note that the white ink cartridge still needs to be shaken prior to use each day, as the ink in the cartridge is not circulated by this system.

The Ink Circulation System is completely disabled and no ink discharge cycle is executed when the printer is configured with CMYK + dual Clear coat.

Roland Intelligent Pass Control

Roland Intelligent Pass Control technology developed by Roland software engineers represents the pinnacle of inkjet printing. This patent-pending system precisely controls dot placement between passes and delivers unprecedented imaging performance in all resolutions. The technology actually enhances image quality at higher print speeds thereby increasing productivity. So the VersaUV series always produces smooth gradations and solid colors, while achieving faster throughput and virtually no banding in all print modes.

Optimized Print Quality and Performance

The LEJ-640 is Roland’s fastest UV printer delivering a maximum print speed of 133 sqft/hr in High Speed CMYK mode. The LEC-540 and LEC-330 deliver maximum CMYK print speeds of 126 sqft/hr and 101 sqft/hr respectively. The VersaUV series can produce 1440 x 1440 dpi press proofs with flawlessly smooth gradations, super fine details and sharp text on actual substrates used for production. Roland Intelligent Pass Control

TM ensures consistent print

quality with virtually no signs of banding in all print modes.

Page 9: Product Information Guide - Denco Sales

Media Clamp System

The LEJ-640 and LEC-540 come with long media clamps that are detected by the printer. The printer will not allow a sheet cut to be performed until they are removed, saving the user from accidentally performing the sheet cut over the media clamps.

The LEC-330 comes with short and long sets of media clamps. When using the long media clamps, the MEDIA CLAMP menu item must be set to LONG which disables the sheet cut feature.

Advanced Media Take-Up System

The VersaUV series includes an automated media feed and take-up system to facilitate precise unattended printing. This pre-assembled unit includes an advanced tension-controlled take-up system for optimum media feed and tracking. When properly configured, this system allows print or print and cut jobs

6 to be run

unattended protecting the output from the dirt or dust on the floor.

Enhanced Media Presets

The VersaUV series includes a wizard-based media settings menu that walks the user through all the necessary adjustments to ensure optimal print quality and accurate cutting.

7 All these

adjustments can be saved as a Media Preset that can be quickly reloaded when the same media is run. When invoked, it reconfigures all printing and cutting parameters with the pre-calibrated values, saving time and money by minimizing the chances of user error. Up to eight Media Presets can be saved and named accordingly for easy identification.

6 For print and cut jobs, it is recommended to select CustomCUT with a page size in VersaWorks that does not exceed 12” (30

cm) in length to avoid the printed face from touching the floor. The LEC-330 supports this feature with the firmware version 4.10 or later. 7 The LEC-330 supports this feature with the firmware version 4.10 or later.

Page 11: Product Information Guide - Denco Sales

Designed for the Environment and Safety

The energy-efficient VersaUV series uses only a fraction of the power used by a conventional UV printer and automatically enters a low-power mode when it is not used for an extended period of time. This energy-efficient design literally saves thousands of dollars in electric bills each year and reduces considerably the emission of greenhouse gases. And because LED lamps do not require any warm up time, saving energy does not reduce your productivity.

Traditional UV curing equipment can expose operators to harmful ozone and UV-B and UV-C radiation. Ozone is a known air pollutant that can cause lung damage and respiratory problems. UV-B and UV-C radiation can cause eye damage, skin cancer and accelerated skin aging. The LED lamps on the VersaUV printers are completely ozone-free and only emit the much safer UV-A radiation.

The VersaUV series is ventilation-ready, featuring a built-in connector for an air filtration system.

Tools for Folding Carton Applications (LEC series only)

The LEC-540 includes a 60-degree carbide blade and a creasing tool in addition to the standard 45-degree blade. These tools allow designers to print and then crease and perf-cut their folding carton designs, all on one device through one seamless workflow.

The LEC-330 users can upgrade their device to match the LEC-540’s capability by adding the optional tools illustrated below.

In September of 2008, Roland introduced the VersaUV LEC-300, revolutionizing the UV inkjet market with its unprecedented print quality, innovative printing and curing technology such as gloss, matte and embossing finishing options, and a low heat, safe LED curing system. In 2009 Roland introduced further improvements with the exclusive Automated Ink Circulation System which dramatically reduced operational costs.

After almost three years since the introduction of the first Roland UV printer/cutter, no other printer or printer/cutter on the market today can match the capabilities of the VersaUV printer and printer/cutters. Beyond the technical benefits of white ink, finishing options with clear coat, and the Automatic Ink Circulation System, the business opportunities that the VersaUV series creates for current and potential Roland owners are just as exciting. The VersaUV series is designed to boost creativity for premium, profitable, high-quality output, opening the door to lucrative new markets.

By bringing the award winning UV technology to a 64” hybrid roll-to-roll and flatbed platform, once again Roland demonstrates its ongoing commitment to the success of its customers and strengthens its leading market position in the process. We expect the excitement generated by the introduction of the new LEJ-640 and our commitment to new innovative solutions to resonate with loyal Roland customers and new users, resulting in even more positive reviews, awards and new sales opportunities.
