Halco pioneered the development and distribution of DTH hammers in the 1950’s, and now our precision engineered range of performance hammers and drill bits are used globally. Predominantly used for mining, DTH is preferred in other applications such as construction, quarrying, formation sampling, and the drilling of water wells.

Halco Rock Tools, in close co-operation with Stenuick Freres, actually established the development and distribution of the down-the-hole

hammer in the 1950’s throughout the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Africa and India.

Produced for more than 60 years, our products continue to be regarded as one of the most reliable and durable available today. This is due to our commitment to our customers’ needs, design expertise, and rigorous product testing in extreme drilling conditions.

What is DTH and how it is used?The “Down-the-Hole” or DTH hammer is used for drilling holes through a wide range of rock types, the variety of which continues to extend well beyond the original conception of early blast hole drilling.

“Down-the-Hole” refers to where the hammer action occurs when compared to drifter hammers, which hammer on top of the drill string. The DTH hammer piston always makes direct contact with the drill bit and there is generally no loss of transmitted energy as the hammer drills deeper, as is the case with drifter (top hammer) rigs.

What is Reverse Circulation?Reverse circulation hammers can in most instances carry out continuous sample collection in a fraction of the time necessary with conventional or wireline coring.

Why is the DTH approach preferred today?Although DTH hammers started life in quarries, they are now appreciated throughout the drilling industry where they have become the preferred option due to their significant advantages overother systems, in particular –

• Capable of drilling in almost all rocks,hard, medium to soft• Penetration rates that can outstrip other systems• Reduced costs• Straighter/cleaner holes• Wide range of hole sizes available, without high expenditure• Quieter than other percussive systems

Prior to DTH technology, blast hole drilling was normally carried out with drifter equipment. Water well drilling in hard formations was done by cable tool rigs or rotary rigs using roller cone bits.

However, because drifter drilling becomes progressively slower with more depth, unlike DTH hammers, and because the latter can drill in one day what a cable tool rig takes weeks to complete, the quarrying, waterwell, site investigation, civil engineering and mining industries throughout the world have become more and more aware of the advantages to be gained from using DTH hammers. This is not only as an alternative to drifters but because of the higher performances when compared to conventional rotary drilling. The DTH hammer concept proved so popular that established manufacturers of drifter steels, bits and accessories, followed our lead and developed their own range of DTH hammers and bits.

How is DTH better?Penetration rates with DTH hammers are almost directly proportional to air pressure therefore doubling the air pressure, will result in approximately double the penetration. The first ever hammers were of “valved” design and had an internal liner. This valved technology, together with compressor availability limited the air pressure capability of the early hammers which were incapable of withstanding air pressures above 12 bar (170psi).

The valve itself had operational problems because hammer malfunction occurred when large volumes of water were passed through the hammers or if grit entered the hammer. Modern hammers are generally valveless in design with fewer internal parts requiring little maintenance.

The removal of the valve has eliminatedthe operational problems previously experienced. Modern hammers are alsoof a rigid construction enabling them towithstand air pressures as high as 30bar (435 psi). Further development of DTH hammers will be in terms of theirdesign will be related to achieving lower user drilling costs through increased rates of penetration and longer life in thehole. Increases in penetration rates willrequire the investigation of delivering yethigher air operating pressures to the hammer as in conventional designs, or the use of alternative power sources such as water or oil.

To achieve longer life of the components of the hammer, research of wear and impact resistant materials not normally associated with traditional hammer manufacture, is essential. Water powered hammers are being developed for use in underground mines.

Although performance results are encouraging, the design of the hammer is limited to use on sites where large amounts of water are available and can be tolerated and most importantly handled and cleaned for return to the hammer. Hydraulic oil powered hammers have been tested in some quarries but these need a specially adapted drill rig, drill tubes and coupling system.

Spillage and potential contamination of the ground is a major consideration. Furthermore, a separate air supply is needed in order to flush the hole.Because of these limitations, water and oil powered hammers are slow to gain ground and air driven hammers still have the competitive edge. The immediate opportunity for DTH hammers is in developing their use for applications normally drilled using other methods, for example shallow oil and gas field development, shallow wide hole piling, continuous drilling and casing systems, reverse circulation chip sampling, mole drilling and applications where holes in excess of 900mm (36”) diameter are required in mining, civil engineering and construction applications..

What are “Down-the-hole” drill bits and how are they used?“Down-the-hole” (DTH) drill bits are used with “Down-the-hole” hammers for drilling holes through a wide range of rocks types. In conjunction with DTH hammers, drill bits are designed with a splined drive for rotating the bit in the ground. Drill bits are available in different sizes and different styles so they can drill a wide range of hole sizes.

How have “Down-the-hole” drill bits developed?Rapid advances in drill bit technology have also occurred throughout the last 40 years. The first type of drill bit used with down the hole hammers was a “cross bit” design.

Four chisel shaped lengths of tungsten carbide were brazed into the bit body.The action of brazing preset stresses within the drill bit thereby limiting its life.A further disadvantage of the cross bit was that the majority of the carbide wassituated around the centre of the bitface and not towards the outer edge of the drill bit where there is the most rock to cut.

In the late 1960’s however, the button bit was introduced and this was a landmark in the progress of DTH equipment which led to bit lives previously unheard of.The button bit design eliminated the primary shortcomings of the cross bit.

Cylindrical button inserts are precision ground to extremely close tolerances and pressed into the drill bit as an interference fit. This resulted in improved carbide insert retention by eliminating brazing stresses and other defects associated with brazing and braze materials. Button inserts are distributed more efficiently than cross bit inserts by providing more cutting power where it is needed at the outer edge of the drill bit face.

In many cases, the need to sharpen the drill bit was eliminated with the arrival of the button bit and the improved cutting action provided increased drilling ratesparticularly in hard rocks.

While the cross bit design is still used in some rotary and drifter applications where the rock is very soft, the button bit is now used in virtually every DTH application.

Applications Overburden SystemsSoft soil is normally drilled with augers or by the rotary method but DTH hammers have adapted to soft conditions by being able to drill and case the hole simultaneously using an eccentric bit which can be withdrawn on completion of the bore hole, leaving the casing in situ, thus preventing hole collapse.

The systems achieve this by enabling the down the hole drill string and casing to be lowered simultaneously. A down the hole hammer is used to which is fitted a driver and eccentric bit.

Our carburised drill bits are among the best in the world providing outstanding performance and durability.We produce all our drill bits at our specialized plant where they are made out of high quality nickel chrome alloy steel, carburised and heat-treated to offer extra protection against wear and fatigue. Every hole in the bit head is machined to within microns and fitted with carbide inserts which provide the cutting action of the rock.

We have three different bit heads on offer, Convex, Flat Face and Concave, also with three different inserts we guarantee we havea drill bit that can tackle any challenge and rock face formation. The two most important factors in choosing the right drill bit are productivity and reliability.

For soft to medium rock formations where penetration rates are high the ballistic and semi-ballistic inserts coupled with flat face or concave bit heads are more suitable.If the rock formation is on the hard to very hard side, it is more advisable to use a domed insert with convex head this will result in a longer drill bit life.

We have four different types of hammers:

MACH RANGEThis is a proven hammer that has been around for over 30 years and is designed for all kinds of drilling conditions but excels in overburden drilling due to the high frequency with less blow energy for drilling through unstable ground conditions. This hammer can drill smaller diameters than the standard range. This range of hammer is ideal for civil engineering.

DOMINATOR RANGEThe Dominator is a higher performance hammer than the Mach Range ideally suitable for medium to higher air pressures in blast-hole applications. This design is simple with fewer components, which makes servicing and on-site maintenance easy. With a range of heavy duty models on offer this extends the life of the hammer considerably.

SUPER DOMINATOR RANGEThe Super Dominator is the latest hammer in the range, specially designed for working at extreme high working pressures up to 500 psi with high penetration rates ideal for blast-hole and waterwell applications. The Super Dominator Range has a simple design with no make-up required. This hammer has an external non-return-valve for easy inspection and service and is available with a 12 spline drive system to reduce shank breakage.

GW RANGEThe new GW series of DTH hammers from Halco Rock Tools offer breakthroughperformance in challenging Geothermal and Waterwell applications. The robust non ported piston design dramatically improves both the piston and internal component life when drilling under a column of water.A built in choke facility allows the driller to adjust the volume of air through the hammer to optimise cuttings evacuation. GW500 and GW600 hammers are fitted with a reversible cylinder to maximise operating life and are suitable for operation at air pressures up to 30bar (435 psi).

Broken bits can cost a great deal in time, efficiency and revenue, but the Halco Bit Catcher System prevents the need for the added time and expense of difficult ‘fishing’ procedures to save the hole.

Designed to fit a wide range of Halco’s class leading standard down the hole hammers, the Bit Catcher System provides an effective retention method should the drill bit break in its most susceptible area, above the head of the bit. If a breakage should occur in this area the head of the bit is retained within the Bit Catcher System and not lost down the hole.

The Halco Bit Catcher System uses a specially designed Chuck and Drill Bit arrangement to ensure there is no loss of drilling performance from either the hammer or the Drill Bit while providing the driller with peace of mind and reassurance that should a breakage occur the Drill Bit will be securely retained within the catcher system.

The Dominator 100 is designed for small diameter drilling operations and its superior drilling performance makes it at least 50% faster than its nearest competitor.

The Mach 20 is fitted with adjustable chokes to give three levels of air volumes for different drilling conditions.

The unique drill bit design for Mach 20 does not use footvalves which reduces the possibility of hammer failure. Mach 20 shank has a long service life and reduces contact stresses and wear rates.

Mach 303 is a general purpose hammer for small hole drilling used in applications such as seismic, geological survey, micro-piling, floor, wall and roof-bolting or for blast-holes where environmental considerations limit hole size and blasting procedures. Dominator 375 hammer gives up to 25% increase in performance compared to Dominator 350 and Dart 350. This exceptional hammer is simple, robust and has a high penetration rate. The Dominator 375 has an integral N.R.V. (Non-Return-Valve) with an adjustable air bleed system to adjust air volume, this hammer has a liner and solid piston design.

This hammer has few internal parts which makes on site servicing easy with minimum tools needed. The MD 3.5 shank drill bit can be fitted for improved service life and heavy duty applications.

The Super Dominator 450 has been specifically designed for high production drilling in blast-hole applications.

The hammer is robust and has few parts, making it user friendly and reliable. The Super Dominator 450 is fitted with a non-return-valve in top-adaptor for quick and easy inspection and maintenance operations. A fixed air distributor in the top-adaptor body means the Super Dominator 450 requires no shimming which simplifies servicing. The Super Dominator 450 has no liner which increases the piston power output.

The Super Dominator 450 utilizes Halco’s all new 12 spline shank which has simplistic robust geometry combined with increased drive contact area. The Super Dominator 450 can be also used with the IR340A/Atlas Copco Cop 44.

The Super Dominator 450 has been specifically designed for high production drilling in blast-hole applications.

The hammer is robust and has few parts, making it user friendly and reliable. The Super Dominator 450 is fitted with a non-return-valve in top-adaptor for quick and easy inspection and maintenance operations. A fixed air distributor in the top-adaptor body means the Super Dominator 450 requires no shimming which simplifies servicing. The Super Dominator 450 has no liner which increases the piston power output.

The Super Dominator 450 utilizes Halco’s all new 12 spline shank which has simplistic robust geometry combined with increased drive contact area. The Super Dominator 450 can be also used with the IR340A/Atlas Copco Cop 44.

The Mach 50 is a general purpose hammer suitable for all rock conditions at a wide range of air pressures. The hammer is fitted with a reversible cylinder to prolong the service life. Mach 50 is versatile and reliable, requiring only a few simple tools for servicing and maintenance.

This hammer is most suited for use with the Sim-Cas Overburden system because of the high frequency of the piston/cycle.

The Dominator 800 is a general purpose hammer suitable for a wide range of air pressures. The Dominator 800 is a low to mid range air volume hammer. The one piece top-adaptor with N.R.V. (Non-Return-Valve) makes it easy to maintain and service the hammer. The Dominator 800 unique’s air distributor finger is integral with the top-adaptor and reduces requirements for shimming. The Dominator 800 has no liner which increases the piston blow energy and reduces parts required. This hammer is suitable for use with overburden systems.

Dominator 800 is available in three different shank types (see below).

The Dominator 880 Deep-Well hammer has been specifically designed for drilling deep holes under a head of water. The one piece top-adaptor with N.R.V. (Non-Return-Valve ) makes it easy to maintain and service the hammer. The wide body diameter of the Dominator 880 DW allows for an increased piston weight and therefore an improved performance. A variable choke for increased air volume can be fitted to the Dominator 880 DW to suit compressor volume outputs.

The Dominator 1000 incorporates a unique piston design for high performance and reliability especially in waterwell applications. This hammer is suitable for a wide range of air pressures. Its optimum performance is reached at air pressures of 200psi (14 bar) and above. The Dominator 1000 has a body diameter of 230mm and piston weight of 87.6kg, one of the heaviest in its class providing excellent performance. A reversible cylinder is fitted to the hammer to prolong its life and reduce cost.

The ‘Captive’ bit retaining rings and an improved thread design ensures that the Dominator 1000 is simple to service with a few tools.

The Mach 132 has a pin drive system to prevent metal to metal contact thereby minimizing spline wear and damage which can result in drill bit shank failure.

Mach 132 has a one piece top-adaptor with N.R.V. (Non-Return-Valve) fitted for easy inspection and service, with integral finger to reduce maintenance and eliminate shimming which increases service intervals. Servicing requires only a few simple tools. Mach 132 has no liner which increases the 140 kg piston blow energy and reduces parts required. This hammer is suitable for use with overburden systems.

These hammers have a one piece “integral top-adaptor” which is robust and simple requiring no make-up components, this gives reliability and ease of service. At higher pressures the RC hammers make easy going of even the hardest of rock structures.

RC412 is equipped with a bit catcher to help retrieve shanked bits and collar the hole. The RC4/412 also has a sub adaptor body to suit most dual wall drill pipe.

What is the Sim-Cas system?The Sim-Cas continuous casing system was designed to overcome the problems of drilling in soft and loose ground conditions where a stable cased hole was required.

The Sim-Cas system achieves this by enabling the “down-the-hole” drill string and casing to be lowered simultaneously. A down the hole hammer is used to which is fitted a driver and a one-piece eccentric bit.

The sim-cas system can be used on all 3 shank design:• Halco• Mission• I.R

What are the advantages of the Sim-Cas system?The Sim-Cas system has a 3 pin retention system with an eccentric bit to drill a larger diameter than the following casing. Because of the 2 piece design of the driver andeccentric bit, the system is easily retracted and redrawn from the casing and unlike some other systems which have difficulty retracting. The eccentric bit has heavy duty tungsten carbide wear gauge inserts to extend the drill bit life. When the eccentric bit extends, the pilot bit centralizes the hammer to help drill straight holes.

The large exhaust paths on the eccentric bit help remove the drill bit cuttings.

On operating the Sim-Cas system when the eccentric bit extends, the design blanks off the access point of the retention pin on the driver. The Sim-Cas system can be used in any angle from the horizontal.

What is the “Shoe Drive” Sim-Cas system?This system permits the casing to be hammered into the ground. This is achieved by a shoulder on the driver, which impacts onto a shouldered casing shoe that is welded to the lead length of casing. With the shoe drive system, the use of a stabilizer is not required.

THE SIM-CAS SYSTEM EXPLAINED

After reaching the required cased depth the drill string is rotated in the opposite

direction, the eccentric bit is then withdrawn into the casing.

This enables the entire drill string to be pulled out, leaving the casing

situated in the bedrock.

Drilling can then be continued using a standard DTH button bit through the

casing.

Drilling into the ground, the eccentric bit rotates outwards to drill

a larger diameter hole than the following casing.

The Sim-Cas 33 Shoedrive system is designed to be used with either threaded or welded casing with a recommended outside diameter of 114mm (4 1/2”) and an inside diameter of 101.6mm (4”).

When in operation the eccentric bit extends to produce a bore size of 128mm reducing to 91mm when it is retracted.

The casing drive shoe is available with either a spigot type connection or a face butting type connection. The internal diameter of the casing drive shoe is 92.5mm. This enables a button bit with a diameter of 91.5mm (or less) to be used to drill through the casing if required.

An optional stabilizer is available.
