9 CHIANTISPISA

The

CHIANTI CLASSICO DOCGThe appellation corresponding to the

historical center of the Tuscan region that

stretches from Florence in the North to

Sienna in the South. Chianti wines have been

produced here for hundreds of years.

CHIANTI DOCGThe appellation that covers the entire Chianti

region in central Tuscany, including Chianti

Classico DOCG as well as the expanded

vineyard area that was planted beyond the

borders of the classico zone in the 20th

century.

MONTALBANOSituated on the lime-rich hills west of

Florence, these wines are light and fruit-

driven with well-balanced acidity.

RUFINAPerhaps the best known of the seven

subzones with a continental climate and high

altitude. Rufina wines are well-structured

and, at their best, rival the top wines from

Chianti’s Classico zone.

COLLI FIORENTINILiterally the “hills of Florence,” this zone

produces round, fresh, and somewhat

fruit-driven Chianti that is easy to drink.

MONTESPERTOLIThe smallest subzone within the Chianti

DOCG, which produces a particularly ripe

Sangiovese for balanced, lush wines.

COLLINE PISANENearly in the shadow of Pisa’s leaning tower,

and situated upon hills that are lower and

closer to the sea, Colline Pisane wines are

delicate and dry, with a fruity aroma when

young.

COLLI ARETINISourced from vineyards near the medieval

city of Arezzo, Colli Aretini wines are

quintessential food wines—bright and

charming with zesty acidity.

COLLI SENESIWines from the hills encircling the once

powerful city of Siena that reflect their

southern location in the Chianti zone with

ripeness, structure, and silky tannins.
