WHEREAS: privacy and security issues result from the massive amounts of personally identifiable information processed each day; and

WHEREAS: awareness of the risks to society must be highlighted to engage citizens and organizations and to galvanize privacy and security professionals around this cause; and

WHEREAS: Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate among all psychiatric illnesses and can develop in anyone, regardless of age, ethno-racial background , socioeconomic status, gender or abi lity; and

WHEREAS: the National Eating Disorder Information Centre is Canada's only national organization dedicated to helping those with eating disorder, food and weight preoccupation and related issues; and

WHEREAS: the Provincial Eating Disorders Awareness campaign launches annually in February with events and activities taking place throughout the year and is a BC Province wide effort to raise awareness around prevention and early intervention of eating disorders as well as media literacy, resiliency, building healthy body image and self-esteem; and

WHEREAS: this week seeks to ra ise awareness of eating disorders, shed light on dangerous and pervasive myths, and promote prevention.

there is an increasing need to raise awareness of the shortage of organ donors, and to acknowledge the families that demonstrate their compassion by sharing the precious gift of life with others; and

there are volunteer groups within our community, like the BC region of the Canadian Transplant Association, that are dedicated to the support of pre and post-transplant patients, and to informing the public of the need for organ and tissue donations.

WHEREAS: Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling neurological disease affecting an estimated 100,000 Canadians and more than 8,000 British Columbians; and

WHEREAS: Multiple sclerosis symptoms vary widely and may lead to problems with numbness, coordination, vision and speech, as well as extreme fatigue and even paralysis; and

WHEREAS: there is no known cause of, prevention of, or cure for multiple sclerosis; and

WHEREAS: Since 1987, the North Shore Keep Well Society has been instrumental in keeping seniors out of hospitals and living healthier and independent lives longer; and

WHEREAS: Today, more than 500 seniors aged 60-97 attend weekly Keep Well classes at seven sites, from Deep Cove to Gleneagles to exercise in order to increase strength, balance and stamina, have blood pressure checks, hand and foot massage, health and nutrition information, social interaction; and

WHEREAS: Many seniors are still at risk of isolation and could benefit greatly from the North Shore Keep Well Society as it is widely acknowledged that physical and mental fitness contribute significantly to continuing good health and that people who have friends and support in the community stay healthier and live longer.

WHEREAS: The General Assembly of the United Nations adopted resolution 46/91 on December 16, 1991 which laid out the UN Principles for Older Persons; and
