Images sourced from books:

Advantages of sourcing images this way:

An advantage of sourcing an image through a book is that it will not lose any quality like a digital image because it is printed in full quality on a page. This will also mean that you have sourced your images more uniquely whereas Google images will be used a lot.

Disadvantages of sourcing images this way:

One disadvantage sourcing an image from a book is that they are always going to be someone else's, so this means when you use them it would be copyright. You are also limited to the amount of photos you can find, whereas on Google images there are an unlimited amount of photos.

Using images from a book also means that you do not have quick access if you want it on your computer/laptop because you would have to scan it in or take a picture.

Images from a book are not manipulate-able so if you want to edit the image you are unable to.

Advantages of sourcing images this way:

The main advantage of sourcing images this way is that you have an endless amount of images which you can manipulate and edit in any way you like. Another advantage is that most images on Google are extremely good quality like the ones I have chosen.

Disadvantages of sourcing images this way:

A disadvantage of sourcing images this way is that when saving images or uploading them to social media sites some quality could possibly be lost because the photo is being compressed. A lot of the images could also possibly be copyright which means you might be restricted to what you can do with them.

Images sourced from copyright free site:

Advantages of sourcing images this way:

An advantage of sourcing images this way is that with some sites if you buy a stock image it can be taken off the website so it is for your use only therefore you have a unique photo. Another advantage of stock and copyright free photos is that they are professional photos so they are the best quality and they will not lose quality.

Disadvantages of sourcing images this way:

A disadvantage of sourcing images this way is that with copyright free it is not always free, sometimes you have to pay for the use which means each time you use it you have to pay in some cases and unlike stock the photo does not become yours.Another disadvantage is that you may not find the exact idea of a photo that you’re after because they have a broad target audience so the photos are very generic.

Images sourced from your own existing images:

Advantages of sourcing images this way:

One of the advantages of sourcing images this way is that you can choose the subject of your image and take it in whatever way/style you like. Also you can edit and alter the image before and after; you can change camera settings to fit the photo, and then after your shoot you can edit them however you like.

Disadvantages of sourcing images this way:

A disadvantage of sourcing images this way is that you may be limited to what equipment/subjects you have access to, meaning you are restricted in what you can take pictures of so that might also mean the quality isn’t good if you haven’t got professional equipment.

300ppi for print

72ppi for web

Page 16: Processing images

Advantages of different resolutions:

An advantage of different resolutions is that if you were to have an image blown up for a large canvas it would need to be a high resolution so that when it is enlarged quality is not lose and it does not go pixelated.

Another advantage of different resolutions is that you can have different resolutions for print, the internet and social media sites.

Disadvantages of different resolutions:

A disadvantage of different resolutions is that if an image is taken at a low resolution for example 72ppi and you change it in Photoshop to 300ppi it will not make much visible difference to the photo because it was already taken in low quality so you cannot improve the quality much so you are limited.

A disadvantage of resolutions especially 72ppi is that less detail of your image is shown because it all has to fit into 72 pixels, whereas at 300ppi you get more detail because there are more pixels for more detail.

Explain the changes you made to the image and explain why you made those changes:

When editing the photo in Photoshop I used image adjustment tools, I started off by adjusting the brightness because the exposure was too high in the photo so it was too light, I then slightly adjusted the contrast so that the photos colour came through more. After this I decided to turn the vibrance down slightly to create a vintage looking effect because it made the outside element in the photo look more fitting. I then went on to ‘Filter’ > ‘Sharpen’ > ‘Unsharp mask’, and sharpened the image to make the dog be more in focus and the texture of it’s fur more visible. Finally I cropped the image from the left to get rid of unnecessary negative space.
