This qualification is ideal if you are thinking about a career in building services engineering and have no previous experience in the sector. Building services is an introductory qualification providing learners with foundation knowledge of the four trades within the sector.You will learn a broad range of skills before progressing to a trade specific qualification in the second year and then onto an advanced apprenticeship.

What you will study:

The course provides a taste of skills in the four disciplines within the sector. These are electrotechnical, plumbing, heating and ventilation and air conditioning and refrigeration.

Type of work:

This qualification enables you to develop hand-skills and demonstrate your ability to complete common tasks within the industry. Learners will gain the basic core skills training and underpinning knowledge to facilitate progression into further learning.

The Level 1 course gives the opportunity to learn skills from all trades in construction and continue onto an intermediate apprenticeship or change to a Level 2 course in either carpentry or plumbing, before progressing to an advanced apprenticeship.

What you will study:

This multi-skilled construction course will equip you with a broad range of skills and enable you to develop the practical experience and knowledge required for maintenance operations, including: carpentry and joinery, brickwork, painting and decorating, tiling, plastering and plumbing.

Type of work:

Completing the intermediate apprenticeship enables you to work as a maintenance operative, carrying out general repairs and maintenance to brickwork, paint, plaster, woodwork and other elements of existing buildings.

A CMO course provides the perfect platform to gain a variety of skills used in trades within the construction sector.

OUR COURSES | AIR CONDITIONING & REFRIGERATION (ACR)CONSTRUCTION, UTILITIES & INFRASTRUCTURE

Studying a level 2 college course for one year will equip you with the skills to progress onto an advanced apprenticeship and become a qualified engineer. There is further opportunity to study at Level 4.

What you will study: You will develop a theoretical and practical knowledge of installing and maintaining refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump systems, receiving the skills and understanding required to be able to work on a wide variety of refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

Type of work:

As a refrigeration and air conditioning engineer, your work could cover either refrigeration – designing, installing and maintaining cooling systems or air conditioning – installing and servicing the systems that control air quality, temperature and humidity.Your duties could include surveying buildings where cooling systems are to be fitted, designing and installing systems, running quality checks to make sure systems are working properly and safely and diagnosing and fixing faults.

Studying a Level 2 college course for one year will equip you with the skills to progress onto an advanced apprenticeship and become a qualified electrician. There is further opportunity to study at Level 4.

What you will study:

Electrical installation courses will include study of health and safety and environmental legislation, cable termination, inspection and testing, fault finding and electrical principles. Completing the advanced apprenticeship enables individuals to be recognised within the industry as competent electricians, being able to work unsupervised on electrotechnical systems.

Type of work:

Installation electricians work on power systems, lighting, fire protection, security and data-network systems in domestic and commercial buildings. There are many further electrotechnical careers that this qualification can lead into, including maintenance electrician, electrotechnical panel builder, machine repair and rewind electrician, highway systems electrician and many more.buildings.

Studying a Level 2 college course for one year will equip you with the skills to progress onto an advanced apprenticeship and become a qualified plumber. There is further opportunity to study at Level 4.

What you will study:

You will learn in our fully equipped classrooms and workshops, studying the underpinning theory, before gaining the practical skills required to achieve professional plumbing and heating qualifications. Learners taking this qualification will be gaining the knowledge required to progress further within the domestic plumbing and gas sector.

Type of work:

Depending on whether you work in homes, industrial or commercial locations, your work could involve installing water supplies, heating systems and drainage, finding faults in systems or equipment and repairing them, servicing gas and oil-fired central heating systems, installing and fixing domestic appliances and emergency call-outs.

Plumbing is a trade that will always be in high demand and essential to the construction industry.

Studying a Level 2 college course for one year will equip you with the skills to progress onto an advanced apprenticeship and become a qualified site carpenter.

What you will study:

You will learn basic through to advanced practical skills specific to site carpentry, including how to carry out first fix flooring and roofing, how to carry out first fix frames, partitions and stairs, how to carry out second fixing operations, how to carry out carpentry maintenance and much more.

Type of work:

A carpenter will work on construction sites or private housing, fitting products such as windows, doors, staircases and internal and architectural joinery. As a carpenter or joiner, you may carry out tasks including cutting and shaping timber, making and assembling doors, window frames, staircases and fitted furniture and fitting wooden structures like joists, roof timbers and partition walls.

Practical carpentry and joinery skills are in high demand. If you want a career in the carpentry trade then this is the course for you.

There is an industry need for building services engineers with workplace experience and higher level qualifications for more advanced roles. Learners completing this qualification can fill this gap, bringing their years of practical experience in addition to new and more advanced skills.

What you will study:

Studying this qualification offers a route allowing learners with experience in the industry to gain a wider and more advanced understanding of building services engineering. There are two pathways within the qualification, one for electrotechnical and one for mechanical services.

Type of work:

The qualification provides a strong foundation for career progression to senior technician status within the building services engineering sector. It could also form the first part (120 credits) of a related foundation degree programme and, as such, provides a possible first year exit or second year entry point qualification.

A Level 4 course in building services engineering provides a broad understanding of a variety of high-level skills needed for industry.

When I finished my GCSEs, I wasn’t sure what career I wanted to go into. I thought it would be a good idea to learn a trade in the meantime so enrolled with PROCAT. Four years on, I am now in the final year of an advanced apprenticeship with Kier Services and looking forward to a career in carpentry.Though I initially intended carpentry to be a ‘fall back’ option whilst deciding what to do in the future, I took to it very quickly. I liked the work because it was skilful and challenging but I was good at it. There was lots to learn and PROCAT wasn’t anything like school. This kept me interested and I decided I wanted to pursue a career in the industry.I finished my level one course early and, with the help of the college, started looking at and applying for apprenticeships. I did some labouring and roofing work whilst on my level one course and enjoyed it but I wanted to continue my education so that I could become qualified. I wasn’t able to find an apprenticeship so PROCAT offered me a chance to further my skills in carpentry on a level two course.

Three months into my course, the apprenticeship team at college told me that an opportunity had come up with Kier Services and they arranged an interview for me. I got the job and PROCAT transferred me from the college course to an apprenticeship. I had been looking for an apprenticeship for a long time but hadn’t had any luck so was really grateful to the college for all the help they provided.I am really enjoying my apprenticeship and the type of work I do. It’s great to work for a big company that offers job security and progression opportunities. When I passed my level two apprenticeship, Kier Services agreed to fund and support me through my level three. They will even get me a company van once I pass my driving test.I really want to continue working for Kier once I finish my apprenticeship but also want to progress further by looking into higher level qualifications. In the long term, my aim is to have my own company with employees working for me!

OUR COURSES | MOTOR VEHICLE MAINTENANCEENGINEERING

You will learn how to maintain and repair a wide range of vehicles; from cars and trucks to motorcycles. You could go on to running your very own car maintenance business or work on hybrid vehicles safely. Courses start at Level 1 and go right through to a Level 3 advanced apprenticeship, upon completion of which, you will be fully qualified.

What you will study:

On the light vehicle maintenance courses, you will start your journey to becoming a fully qualified mechanic or vehicle technician. There is an excellent range of practical and theoretical lessons which help you develop skills in a realistic and well-equipped environment.

Type of work:

Completing the advanced apprenticeship can lead to a career as a Light Vehicle Diagnostic Technician. This involves carrying out light vehicle maintenance and inspections including servicing, diagnosing, repairing and replacing faulty parts and maintaining records.

The rail engineering courses offered at PROCAT include rail traction and rolling stock, signalling and telecommunications. These courses are offered as apprenticeships with some big names from the industry, including Eurostar, Thales, Bombardier, Telent and Keolis Amey.

What you will study:

In the first year of the programme you will gain practical skills and the underpinning knowledge required, including specialist courses and permits for working on the railway. In subsequent years you will also work towards either a BTEC diploma or higher apprenticeship, with the objective of gaining the relevant competency licenses to practice.

Type of work:

Apprentices completing the PROCAT higher apprenticeship pathways are provided with excellent preparation towards professional registration and progression to Incorporated Engineer registration via the Level 6 framework and/or experience. The nature of the work means that you should be willing to work unsociable hours, including nights.

What you will study:

Further education students will explore aircraft mechanics, science, avionics, engines and undertake a project. PROCAT is able to offer a limited amount of advanced apprenticeships. There is a mixture of practical and theory work involved. Electrical engineering is concerned with power generation, storage and transmission. Electronics engineering is focused on appliances and devices that use electricity and electricity applications that are used in signal processing or control systems. Learners wishing to study electrical and electronic engineering should have strong maths skills.

What you will study:

Further education students will explore electronics and automation. Advanced and higher apprentices will explore microprocessors, electronic devices, programmable logic controllers, analogue and digital electronics and instrumentation. At Level 4 these concepts are taken further and learners are allocated an electronics research project.

Type of work:

Students studying these courses can become electrical engineers, who design, install and maintain electrical control systems, machinery and equipment or electronics engineers who assemble, design, test and develop the circuits and systems to perform certain tasks or functions. Welders and sheet metal workers operate across a broad range of industries including construction, engineering, manufacturing, transport, aerospace, and offshore oil and gas and make and weld many different products using several different methods. It is skilled and varied work.

What you will study:

At Level 2 the qualification introduces students to fabrication and welding, building basic skills. At an advanced level, it covers knowledge and understanding of the principles, methods and technology involved in fabrication and welding. The general engineering apprenticeship is the most varied engineering course available at PROCAT. Students can study units encompassing all other aspects of engineering, depending on the skills required by their employers. It is also a possible route to progress to a higher apprenticeship or HNC.

What you will study:

The course can involve aspects of all areas of engineering depending on employer specification. Students can expect to gain knowledge and skills in electrical and electronics, mechanical principles, CNC, CAD/CAM, fabrication and welding and more.

Type of work:

PROCAT’s general engineering apprenticeship scheme tends to be adopted by larger engineering companies who require their technicians to be skilled across multiple disciplines in order to work effectively in their business. A high proportion of machining is now computer numerically controlled (CNC). You could be responsible for setting and operating the CNC machine in a mechanical craft related career. This course can involve learning about the preparation and using of lathes, milling machines and CNC machining centres, advanced techniques in CNC, turning and milling, inspection and control, CNC programming and more.

Type of work:

My favourite lesson was technology. I did well in lessons and achieved highly in my GCSEs qualifi cati ons, leaving with four A*’s, four A’s and one B grade. Why did you want to go into an apprenti ceship rather than A-levels like your friends?I think that doing an apprenti ceship equips you with the workplace skills required for going straight into a job because you are employed throughout the course. Also, as I am already earning a wage and am sti ll living at home, I can already start saving my wages.What impression has PROCAT made on you?I am impressed with the practi cal element of engineering of engineering at PROCAT compared to classroom based at school. As the UK’s only College of Advanced Technology, PROCAT encourages progression from further educati on to higher level apprenti ceships, HNC/HND courses and beyond. Technical training with PROCAT offers either an alternative to, or indeed another route into university.

GIRLS IN ENGINEERING

Skills shortageThe UK is heading for an engineering skills crisis. The rapid growth of the industry coupled with an ageing workforce means that the sector needs to recruit 2.2 million more people over the next five to 10 years to meet demand. If the sector is to achieve the required growth for the future, a concerted effort is needed to attract more women into the profession. Despite the broad array of opportunities available to them with engineering companies urgently trying to recruit more female employees, women still only represent 8.7% of professional engineers. The UK cannot continue to miss out on the talent on offer in half of the population.

Why engineering?Though young women consistently match or even outclass their male peers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects, engineering is too often viewed as a male career option.

Engineering provides the chance to study towards an interesting and varied career. There are many different aspects of engineering to specialise in, from electronics and robotics, to transport and aviation. Few other industries can offer such exciting and rewarding work, whilst promising strong job opportunities and high salaries.

What do women studying engineering have to say?Some of the female students at PROCAT had their say on choosing to study engineering:“Females should definitely look into a career in engineering as there is just as much opportunity for females and there is for males. Employer profileHarrods Limited

Harrods is a world renowned department store situated in the iconic Knightsbridge area of London. It is the biggest of its kind in Europe, with over one million square feet of retail space and is almost twice the size of the second biggest shop in the UK. What people often don’t think about is the maintenance of such businesses, or buildings. PROCAT works in partnership with Harrods to provide technical training to its air conditioning and refrigeration apprentices, while Harrods provides the real working environment and experience required to complete the qualification.With such a large amount of space, maintenance is an essential part of the business and the company employs around 100 staff in its Engineering and Building Services Team to perform these tasks. The team is made of plumbers, electricians, carpenters, air conditioning and refrigeration engineers and more.Within the Engineering and Building Services Team, there are 11 apprentices, one of whom, Darius Lau, is an air conditioning

and refrigeration apprentice studying at PROCAT. Darius’ role at Harrods allows him to get a broad range of experience in reactive maintenance. He is responsible for the refrigerated equipment in the building including the fridges in the food halls, the cooling towers, and air conditioning for the offices and building.Darius works in a very high pressured environment, with the shop opening at 10am on a daily basis, he only has two hours to complete any routine maintenance and checks in visible areas. Not only that but much of the work he does is reactive and when there is a fault during opening hours, it is crucial that it is fixed as quickly and efficiently as possible. Any mistakes made or extra time taken has an impact and a cost. This means that Darius is required to think on his feet and develop good problem solving skills. Harrods highly values the training and development of staff as reflected by very high retention rates and this filters right down to apprentices. Mark Fleming, Engineering Technical Manager at

Harrods, is very keen for his staff and apprentices to develop into multi-skilled tradesman for their own and the company benefit. Mark said; “With ageing workforces and shortages in the construction and engineering industries, it is crucial to invest in the future. I believe apprenticeships are the best way to do that.”Harrods always encourage their apprentices to continue into further training and develop more skills, as well as incentivising them with pay increases to reflect the qualifications they achieve. Mark went on to state; “Beyond training and pay, apprentices at Harrods have more perks than many in the same industry. These include working indoors, tools being provided and the opportunity to build their own career within the company.”Harrods is just one example of the hundreds of companies’ PROCAT works in partnership with, to train the next generation of skilled technical engineers and master craftspeople for industry.
