Sector Gas-Fired Power Plant Project Type Gas-Fired Power Plant Development Project Title Preparatory Study on Gas-Fired Power Plant Development in Southern Mozambique Location Southern Mozambique District, The Republic of Mozambique Client Mozambique Electricity Company/ Japan International Cooperation Agency Project Period September 2012 – March 2013 Problems addressed by the Project 1. Background Recent economic growth has brought high electric demand and electric power consumption in Mozambique. In order to fill the gap between demand and supply, the Mozambique Electricity Authority (EDM) is continuing rehabilitation of old small-scaled hydroelectric and thermal power plants, and purchasing electric power from independent power producers (IPPs). The urgent issue to meet the mid- and long-term power demand in the southern area is to install a new power plant for Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. Under the condition as mentioned above, the Government of Mozambique requested technical cooperation to the Government of Japan in January 2012 in order to assist building a 100 MW gas-fired combined cycle power plant. 2. Consulting Services Implementation consultant for preparatory study on gas-fired power plant development in southern Mozambique to carry out efficiently and meet standards and requirements of the Guidelines of JICA has been done by OC Global.
