Problem: The projects will finally be delivered the to the Haiti farmers, one concern is the transportation                               expense, the other is that the project is for individual and small community use. So we need to confine                                   the weight and the size of the final products in a proper range.

Known :The whole project is consist of four parts1. Washing machine2. Shred machine3. Drying structure4. Grinder machine

Assumption:1. To reduce the cost and create jobs, the washing machine can be neglected. The people there can                                 prepare the breadfruit by hand.2. Michelle is conducting the drying project, so this part can depend on her work.3. There are some projects in transferring breadfruit to flour exist already. From the information they                             offer we can estimate our target size and weight.

1. The farmers may not have a fixed station to conduct production in the near future, they may need tomove the machines around frequently, etc. start a days working in the morning, move the machines fromstorage to a site with easy access to water source, then in the afternoon move them back to avoidclimate erosion. So the machines should be able to be lift by the least strong people, like women, orolder people.2. On the other hand, the weight of the machine can’t be too light. Lighter material often means moreexpense in manufacture. On the other hand, the shredding and grinding process include high speedspinning, so we need control the induced vibration amplitude. Vibration is often a serious cause of thefailure of the structure and lower the quality of output product. Despite other design details, to increasethe weight of the machine can benefit to reduce the vibration between the ground and the machine.

Based on the project from CTL, the size for both machines ( Without the energy input part ) are around                                     29 x 21 x 19 inches (Width x Depth x Height ) or 11571 square inch.Based on my own experience, I’m a guy of 178cm, roughly 5.8 feet or 70 inches. According to one                                   research, Height = 0.788 (Arm Span) + 35.421, so my arm span can be 181cm, 5.9 feet or 71 inches. Thus I                                         can estimate I can lift a cube of 25 x 25 x 25 inches or 15625 square inch.

According to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a person has the ability to carry 25lbs is not                               defined as disabled,  so the weight for both machines are expect to be within 25lbs.

From the CTL project we can find that they use a bike to power the grinder. Based on the costumer                                     interview, they prefer human powered device in order to create more jobs according to the current                             situation, and gasoline/diesel engine is rare and be put into other more important uses.There are two optionsOperate by hands through a handleOperate by pedal through a exercise bike like machine

The reason that the grinding machine need a bike is that the grinding process need a higher spinning                                 speed to produce fine powder ( flour ), and human hand is hard to achieve that. For the latter option, the bike are expect to be no bigger than 45 x 23 x 45 inches, and the weight is 50 lbs                                               based on the information of a exercise bike in Amazon.

Figure 3: Ordinary exercise bikeThe weight can be further reduced by removing some negligible supportive structure and tensionapplying structure, the final target weight of the bike is around 25 lbs.

Conclusion:

The project should consist a set of three devices, the shredding machine, grinding machine and a biketo offer torque. For daily use, these three device should be able to be carry around by people with littleobstacle if they are successfully designed within all the properties. Furthermore, they can betransported in a large amount of numbers with little expense.
