Chapter 2FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTIONS AND GRAPHS
3
Key Terms
Raw Data: data collected in original form.
Ex: What town/city do you live in?
4
Types of Frequency Distributions
Categorical: used for data that can be placed in specific categories (nominal and ordinal).
Ex: political affiliation, religious affiliation, or major field of study.
Uses 3 columns: CLASS, FREQUENCY, PERCENT (nearest tenth).
5Categorical Frequency Distributions
CATEGORY FREQUENCY PERCENT
6
Types of Frequency Distributions
Grouped: used when the range of data is large; data is grouped into classes that are more than one unit.
Ex: minutes traveling, miles traveled
Uses 4 columns: CLASS LIMITS, CLASS BOUNDARIES, FREQUENCY, CUMULATIVE FREQUENCY.
7
Grouped Frequency Distributions
Determining classes:
1) Approximately 5-20 classes.
2) Class width should be an odd number.
3) Classes must be mutually exclusive.
4) Classes must be continuous.
5) Classes must be exhaustive.
6) Classes must be equal in width.
8
Grouped Frequency Distributions
Class Limits: lowest limit and upper limit of each class (same place value as raw data)
Class Boundaries: separate classes so there are no gaps (one additional place value than raw data – end in )
Class Width: Range Number of Classes

Types of Frequency Distributions
Ungrouped: used when the range of data is relatively small; a single data value is used for each class.
Ex: age of students in high school
Uses 4 columns: CLASS LIMITS, CLASS BOUNDARIES, FREQUENCY, CUMULATIVE FREQUENCY.

15Probability & Statistics – Bell Ringer
If a frequency distribution has a class with the class limits of 12-18:
1. What is the width?
2. What are the class boundaries?
3. What would be the next four classes?
