The new cloud service enables business employees to share, access and sync all their work files securely, whenever and wherever they are and on any device. This removes the need for users to copy files to USBs or email documents to themselves, which are common causes of data breaches.

Mark Butcher, commercial director at Proact, said that business users want easy access to their company data, but few IT departments have been able to provide this service until now. Employees therefore end up using file-sharing services that lack sharing controls and contractual agreements.

“Probox has been designed with security at the forefront of its development, as opposed to being a bolt-on to the system. It therefore provides enterprise-class levels of availability, performance and security to even the most stringent businesses, ensuring their vital data is as safe and available as possible,” he said.

Each employee gets 20GB of personal storage space, and files are synced automatically to the cloud. Only the intended recipient can open the files. Proact said that when a user accesses the service, their web browser and the data they transmit is protected by the same encryption methods used by major banks and government institutions.

Using Probox is also a lot faster that alternative ways of file sharing, because files are synced instantaneously, according to Butcher.

“It enhances the speed of a sent email, as users send information via links rather than attachments. This means it is now possible to quickly and simply send complete folders of files rather than simply sending multiple individual documents,” he said.

Last month the Dropbox file-sharing service suffered a major setback in its efforts to move into the enterprise more forcefully, after being hit by a spam attack that stemmed from the breach of an employee's account. Dropbox confirmed that a stolen employee password had led to the theft of a "project document" that contained user email addresses. With addresses in hand, the hacker then proceeded to spam European users of the cloud-storage service with ads for gambling websites.

Analysts agree that Dropbox still has a way to go before it is enterprise-ready. “Dropbox has had a checkered history with security, but perhaps this was the wakeup call they needed,” said Chester Wisniewski, senior security adviser for Sophos. Despite the security risks, however, more employees in the future are expected to use services, mobile devices and other new technologies outside the control of IT departments.

Gartner predicts that in less than three years, 35 percent of enterprise IT expenditures will occur outside of the corporate budget. As a result, many experts advise companies to abandon their command-and-control strategy and adopt a more cooperative tactic to deal with workers looking for the easiest way to get their jobs done.

Storage integrator Proact has said the hacking issues surrounding Dropbox "could not have come at a better time" as it launches its answer to the service in the form of Probox. The online file-sharing service, which has been 12 months in the making, marks the beginning of Proact's diversification into product development. Free cloud file-sharing site Dropbox recently upgraded its security after hackers gained access to service users' email addresses. Proact's offering, which is available to use on mobile devices as well as standard platforms, is designed to prevent data leakage while still delivering functionality to users and security control to businesses, according to the integrator. Proact's commercial director Mark Butcher said file-sharing security is of paramount concern for businesses. "Corporate information is leaking out of every hole. [Security] issues with Dropbox were ignored; it is only when you see data coming out left, right and centre that people start to listen," he added. "There are dozens of file-sharing services out there with similar offerings, but they all lack ultimate control [for businesses]. Storage integrator Proact has launched a new online file storage service, Probox, to compete in the

fast growing cloud storage market against the likes of DropBox, SkyDrive, iCloud and Google Drive.

Probox will allow employees to share and sync all their work files with their colleagues, and to their

mobile devices automatically.

Proact commercial director Mark Butcher told V3 that unlike other file-sharing services in the market,

Probox had been designed with business users in mind.

Butcher said Proact aims to give Probox users the flexibility they want, while ensuring enterprise-

grade security.

"Many of our customers deny how many of their staff use Dropbox-type services. Staff use the

services to store company critical information, but this leaves the IT department with no guarantee of

security, knowledge of data location or control," he said.

"All users want is simplicity, but with the storage services on offer at the moment, many IT

departments can't give them this. Current enterprise storage services are clunky and need a secure

VPN service, hence why Dropbox has been so successful in businesses."

The new cloud service provides each employee with 20GB of personal storage space, and can sync

data across a range of platforms including Mac, PC, iOS and Android.

When a user accesses Probox, all the data they transmit will be encrypted, said Butcher.

"There are storage enterprise cloud services out there but the security isn't up to scratch."

The release of Probox follows a series of hacking attacks on consumer storage provider Dropbox.

Following the attacks, security engineers and analysts have warned UK businesses need to stop

trusting free consumer services with their data.

Probox is priced at £6 per user, per month, for the 20GB of storage. Although Proact has just

released the new service today in the UK and Europe, Probox has undergone beta testing for a

number of months by Proact partner, NetApp.

Probox will face competition from a number of cloud storage firms that are specifically targeted at the

enterprise and meet requirements when it comes to security, such as Ignite and Intronis and US firm

Box.

The launch of the firm's Probox service follows on from a Proact customer survey, which revealed that

company staff are going against the advice of senior management by using consumer file sharing

services Dropbox and Skydrive.

“These services are fantastic for end users, because they give them exactly what they want,” Mark

Butcher, commercial director of Proact told Cloud Pro.

“But for your organisation it is a nightmare, because you are storing company critical information on a

totally insecure platform where you have no control over it,” he said.

Data stored on US servers is subject to the Patriot Act, which can be problematic for financial services

firms, added Butcher.

Butcher explains: “Sharing files through Probox is more effective and secure than emailing documents to yourself and your work colleagues. Using Probox to share files means that only your intended recipient can open the file you share, nobody else. It enhances the speed of a sent email, as users send information via links rather than attachments. This means it is now possible to quickly and simply send complete folders of files rather than simply sending multiple individual documents.”

Probox also enhances business productivity and the security of company data. When a user accesses Probox their web browser and the data they transmit is securely protected by the same encryption methods used by major banks and government institutions.

By mapping its IT closely with its business strategy, DWF has driven an estimated £0.5m to supporting business expansion and client side developments.
