Proact launches latest 'Dropbox for the enterprise' New cloud storage service goes up against the likes of Google Drive and Microsoft SkyDrive

By Sophie Curtis | Techworld | Published: 10:01, 08 August 2012 Storage integrator Proact has launched a new file-sharing and storage service called Probox – the latest offering claiming to be a “Dropbox for the enterprise,” alongside the likes of Google Drive, VMware Octopus, Microsoft SkyDrive, Box and Huddle Sync. The new cloud service enables business employees to share, access and sync all their work files securely, whenever and wherever they are and on any device. This removes the need for users to copy files to USBs or email documents to themselves, which are common causes of data breaches.

Mark Butcher, commercial director at Proact, said that business users want easy access to their company data, but few IT departments have been able to provide this service until now. Employees therefore end up using file-sharing services that lack sharing controls and contractual agreements.

“Probox has been designed with security at the forefront of its development, as opposed to being a bolt-on to the system. It therefore provides enterprise-class levels of availability, performance and security to even the most stringent businesses, ensuring their vital data is as safe and available as possible,” he said.

Each employee gets 20GB of personal storage space, and files are synced automatically to the cloud. Only the intended recipient can open the files. Proact said that when a user accesses the service, their web browser and the data they transmit is protected by the same encryption methods used by major banks and government institutions.

Using Probox is also a lot faster that alternative ways of file sharing, because files are synced instantaneously, according to Butcher.

“It enhances the speed of a sent email, as users send information via links rather than attachments. This means it is now possible to quickly and simply send complete folders of files rather than simply sending multiple individual documents,” he said.

Page 56: Proact Coverage Book 2012

Last month the Dropbox file-sharing service suffered a major setback in its efforts to move into the enterprise more forcefully, after being hit by a spam attack that stemmed from the breach of an employee's account. Dropbox confirmed that a stolen employee password had led to the theft of a "project document" that contained user email addresses. With addresses in hand, the hacker then proceeded to spam European users of the cloud-storage service with ads for gambling websites.

Analysts agree that Dropbox still has a way to go before it is enterprise-ready. “Dropbox has had a checkered history with security, but perhaps this was the wakeup call they needed,” said Chester Wisniewski, senior security adviser for Sophos. Despite the security risks, however, more employees in the future are expected to use services, mobile devices and other new technologies outside the control of IT departments.

Gartner predicts that in less than three years, 35 percent of enterprise IT expenditures will occur outside of the corporate budget. As a result, many experts advise companies to abandon their command-and-control strategy and adopt a more cooperative tactic to deal with workers looking for the easiest way to get their jobs done.

Proact launches enterprise answer to

Dropbox Storage integrator dabbles in product development By Hannah Breeze

Storage integrator Proact has said the hacking issues surrounding Dropbox "could not have come at a better time" as it launches its answer to the service in the form of Probox. The online file-sharing service, which has been 12 months in the making, marks the beginning of Proact's diversification into product development. Free cloud file-sharing site Dropbox recently upgraded its security after hackers gained access to service users' email addresses. Proact's offering, which is available to use on mobile devices as well as standard platforms, is designed to prevent data leakage while still delivering functionality to users and security control to businesses, according to the integrator. Proact's commercial director Mark Butcher said file-sharing security is of paramount concern for businesses. "Corporate information is leaking out of every hole. [Security] issues with Dropbox were ignored; it is only when you see data coming out left, right and centre that people start to listen," he added. "There are dozens of file-sharing services out there with similar offerings, but they all lack ultimate control [for businesses]. If [a company] has 1,000 users and 50 use Dropbox and 100 use Skydrive,

for example, businesses have no idea who owns the data and where in the world it is stored; they lose control."

UK’s First Enterprise-Class File Sharing Service Launched

by Proact

London, 6 August 2012: Proact, Europe’s leading storage integrator and cloud services provider, today announces the launch of the UK’s first dedicated enterprise-class online file storage service, Probox www.probox.eu.

The new cloud service enables all business employees to simply and securely share, access and sync all their work files across work teams and to their mobile devices automatically, instantly and continuously – anytime and anywhere.

The increasing demand for access to shared files is forcing over 65% of workers to use unauthorised online filestorage services to store business data, according to a Proact survey. Probox utilises the latest technology and best practice to safeguard data, prevent unauthorised access and guarantee service availability.

Mark Butcher, Commercial Director at Proact, explains: “Business users want a service that provides them with flexible and immediate access to their company data, but few IT departments have been able to provide this service until now. This means employees have had no choice but to flaunt regulations by using file sharing services that put the company at serious risk of data leakage with zero control of their data location or sharing controls and a total lack of service level or contractual agreement.”

“Probox enables businesses to ensure users retain ownership and control of their data with a secure service that has been built specifically with business use in mind. Probox has been designed with security at the forefront of its development, as opposed to being a bolt-on to the system. It therefore provides enterprise-class levels of availability, performance and security to even the most stringent businesses, ensuring their vital data is as safe and available as possible.”

Probox provides each employee with 20GB of personal storage space, instantaneously syncing their data to the cloud and to mobile devices, across a range of platforms including Mac, PC, iOS and Android. This enables them to securely access company files and folders whenever and wherever they are and on any device, negating the need for users to copy files to USBs or email documents to themselves.

Butcher explains: “Sharing files through Probox is more effective and secure than emailing documents to yourself and your work colleagues. Using Probox to share files means that only your intended recipient can open the file you share, nobody else. It enhances the speed of a sent email, as users send information via links

Proact launches Probox file-sharing tool to

rival Dropbox By Rosalie Marshall

Storage integrator Proact has launched a new online file storage service, Probox, to compete in the

fast growing cloud storage market against the likes of DropBox, SkyDrive, iCloud and Google Drive.

Probox will allow employees to share and sync all their work files with their colleagues, and to their

mobile devices automatically.

Proact commercial director Mark Butcher told V3 that unlike other file-sharing services in the market,

Probox had been designed with business users in mind.

Butcher said Proact aims to give Probox users the flexibility they want, while ensuring enterprise-

grade security.

"Many of our customers deny how many of their staff use Dropbox-type services. Staff use the

services to store company critical information, but this leaves the IT department with no guarantee of

security, knowledge of data location or control," he said.

"All users want is simplicity, but with the storage services on offer at the moment, many IT

departments can't give them this. Current enterprise storage services are clunky and need a secure

VPN service, hence why Dropbox has been so successful in businesses."

The new cloud service provides each employee with 20GB of personal storage space, and can sync

data across a range of platforms including Mac, PC, iOS and Android.

When a user accesses Probox, all the data they transmit will be encrypted, said Butcher.

Publication:  V3  Date:  07.08.12

Page 62: Proact Coverage Book 2012

"All enterprises in the UK market will also be given the guarantee that all data will be stored in a tier

three UK datacentre," added Butcher.

"There are storage enterprise cloud services out there but the security isn't up to scratch."

The release of Probox follows a series of hacking attacks on consumer storage provider Dropbox.

Following the attacks, security engineers and analysts have warned UK businesses need to stop

trusting free consumer services with their data.

Probox is priced at £6 per user, per month, for the 20GB of storage. Although Proact has just

released the new service today in the UK and Europe, Probox has undergone beta testing for a

number of months by Proact partner, NetApp.

Probox will face competition from a number of cloud storage firms that are specifically targeted at the

enterprise and meet requirements when it comes to security, such as Ignite and Intronis and US firm

Box.

Proact launches new online file storage service in UK

CBR Staff Writer Published 07 August 2012

Probox enhances business productivity and the security of company data

UK based storage integrator and cloud services provider Proact has launched its online file storage service, Probox, for business users.

With the new cloud service, employees can now share, access and sync all their work files securely with their team members and to their mobile devices conveniently.

Proact said it is first such service in the UK and the new online file storage service provides data security, prevent unauthorised access and guarantee service availability enhancing business productivity.

Probox provides each employee with 20GB of personal storage space, syncing their data to the cloud and to mobile devices, across several platforms including Mac, PC, iOS and Android.

It will also enable the employees to access company files and folders securely, whenever and wherever they are and on any device, eliminating the need for users to copy files to USBs or email documents.

Users can access Probox through their web browser and the data they transmit is securely protected by the encryption similar way the data is protected by banks and government institutions.

Proact commercial director Mark Butcher said Probox enables businesses to ensure users retain ownership and control of their data with a secure service that has been built specifically with business use in mind.

"Probox has been designed with security at the forefront of its development, as opposed to being a bolt-on to the system. It therefore provides enterprise-class levels of availability, performance and security to even the most stringent businesses, ensuring their vital data is as safe and available as possible," Butcher said.

Proact does a Dropbox with security Posted by Martin Banks on Tue, 07/08/2012 - 07:41 Some things are fact, and some things are folklore, and the latter usually includes a fair degree of the former. But it is certainly the case that most security experts believe the folklore that Dropbox is hardly the most secure online storage service, and there are facts to prove it. However, for the typical user Dropbox is extremely easy and convenient to use, and really rather useful. That is why it has become a common operational tactic for business people who want or need to work away from their desk. Upload a few important files you want to work on and download them to the home system when you get home. In theory that sounds fine, but in practice most security experts suggest it forms the fundamental ingredients of a recipe for disaster if sensitive files are on Dropbox and unprotected. So the race is on to introduce a Dropbox equivalent that is geared far more to the needs of the business community. In particular, this means coming up with something that combines the flexibility and ease of use of Dropbox, and the levels of data and access security that business users have a right to expect. Latest contender is Proact, which has just launched the UKʼs first dedicated enterprise-class online file storage service, Probox. The new cloud service enables all business employees to simply and securely share, access and sync all their work files across work teams and to their mobile devices automatically, instantly and continuously – anytime and anywhere.

According to a recent Proact survey, the increasing demand for access to shared files is forcing over 65% of workers to use unauthorised online file storage services to store business data. This means employees have increasingly felt they had no choice but to flaunt regulations by using file sharing services that put the company at serious risk of data leakage. Most of the current services provide zero control over data location or sharing controls, with little or no service level or contractual agreement provided. Proact claims that Probox utilises the latest technology and best practices to safeguard data, prevent unauthorised access and guarantee service availability. It claims it has been designed with security at the forefront of its development, as opposed to being a bolt-on to the system, with enterprise-class levels of availability, performance and security. Data transmitted to and from the service is securely protected by the same encryption methods used by major banks and government institutions. Probox provides each employee with 20GB of personal storage space, instantaneously syncing their data to the cloud and to mobile devices, across a range of platforms including Mac, PC, iOS and Android. UK’S SERVICE

UK’s Proact debuts file sharing service

(06-Aug-2012) Storage integrator Proact has launched what it believes is the UK's first enterprise-ready online file sharing service, Probox.

The new cloud service enables all business employees to simply and securely share, access and sync all their work files across work teams and to their mobile devices automatically, instantly and continuously – anytime and anywhere.

The launch follows on from a Proact customer survey, which revealed that company staff are going against the advice of senior management by using consumer file sharing services Dropbox and Skydrive. “Probox enables businesses to ensure users retain ownership and control of their data with a secure service that has been built specifically with business use in mind. Probox has been designed with security at the forefront of its development, as opposed to being a bolt-on to the system. It therefore provides enterprise-class levels of availability, performance and security to even the most stringent businesses, ensuring their vital data is as safe and available as possible,” commented Mark Butcher, commercial director of Proact. Proact claims Probox clients’ data is stored in a tier three, UK data centre, built on the NetApp Flexpod enterprise platform. As part of the launch, Probox is available as a 30-day free trial. Storage integrator debuts file sharing service for business users

Storage integrator Proact claims to have launched the UK's first enterprise-ready online file sharing

service.

The launch of the firm's Probox service follows on from a Proact customer survey, which revealed that

company staff are going against the advice of senior management by using consumer file sharing

services Dropbox and Skydrive.

“These services are fantastic for end users, because they give them exactly what they want,” Mark

Butcher, commercial director of Proact told Cloud Pro.

“But for your organisation it is a nightmare, because you are storing company critical information on a

totally insecure platform where you have no control over it,” he said.

Data stored on US servers is subject to the Patriot Act, which can be problematic for financial services

firms, added Butcher.

“That is where we came from with Probox: building a service that is actually designed for enterprise customers with a proper grade of security that gives a business the control they want... things like

[using] proper end-to-end encryption,” he explained.

doing it in a way that doesn’t get rid of the flexibility that people want," added Butcher.

As part of the launch, Probox is available as a 30 day free trial. More information can be found

Law firm DWF adopts cloud services from Proact to aid rapid business growth

DWF ploughs an estimated £0.5m into business developments thanks to innovative IT from Proact. Date: 12 Jul 2012

Proact, a leading storage integrator and cloud services provider, is providing the business law firm DWF with cloud services to facilitate the firm’s rapid growth. DWF has deployed an enterprise cloud solution, which is fully managed by Proact. The on-premise Storage as a Service (StaaS) solution will be hosted at DWF’s primary offices with backup and disaster recovery being delivered from the Proact Enterprise Cloud. DWF now has access to high end storage technologies through a system that can grow with its business, improving system performance and resilience. This is part of DWF’s overall business strategy to reach a top 20 position in the law industry. DWF adopted a StaaS model rather than the traditional approach in order to quickly develop other strategic agendas. By mapping its IT closely with its business strategy, DWF has driven an estimated £0.5m to supporting business expansion and client side developments. Richard Hodkinson, CTO at DWF, comments: “The cloud based IT solution provided by Proact has changed the profile of the investment making high end technologies more accessible and enabling other investments in areas to be developed. Our business is growing fast and we can now redirect cash in improving the business, adding to our client services and supporting expansion.” He added: “Proact took the time to get under the skin of our business needs and provided us with a solution that reflects our growth strategy. When we were searching for a solution Proact’s proposition was far superior to other suppliers.” Jason Clark, CEO at Proact UK, adds: “We’ve been working with the legal sector for many years and understand how important reliable and scalable IT is for them. IT underpins the service they offer to their clients and the rate at which business can grow. Changes in regulations have meant that non-lawyers can now own law firms, increasing competition and the way the industry is run. Having an agile IT infrastructure with a fixed fee means a law firm can optimise how the business operates. We’ve provided DWF with an innovative approach to IT allowing the company to focus on its core business.”
