1. Small classes. Private schools often have small class sizes, typically of no more than 20 students. A class may even have more than one teacher. Parents see the advantages of a low student-to-teacher ratio. “Students get the attention they need,” says Ellen Meents-DeCaigny, whose son is a sophomore at DePaul College Prep, a Catholic high school with 500 students on Chicago’s North Side. “We appreciate that.” Parent Katie McMillan sends her three boys to Catherine Cook School, a private grade school in Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood. She picked the school, in part, because each class had just 21 students with a lead teacher and assistant teacher. “My kids like it there,” she says. McMillan also loves that the school has made technology and software coding an important part of the curriculum even in the early years. Chicago City Day School on the North Side offers junior kindergarten-8th grade and limits enrollment to 200 students. “Small schools mean big opportunities,” says Galeta Clayton, head of school. The small setting gives students the chance to participate in all programs, including drama and public speaking. “The world will belong to those who can defend their ideas,” Clayton says. Rochelle Zell Jewish High School, Deerfield, has 185 students. Small class sizes translate into students who know the teachers, and teachers who know the students. “The relationships between students and teachers are like nothing I have seen before,” says Dean of Faculty Roger Stein, a former principal of Niles West High School. “Students can ask for help and feel understood by their teachers.” 2. Individual support. Private schools are structured to provide students with the individual support they need to succeed. Because the schools aren’t bound by certain rules, they can be fairly flexible in their approach. “Students don’t fall through the cracks,” Stein says. Elgin Academy, with pre-kindergarten-12th grade, has a director of personalized learning, Anne-Elise Parker. She says her mission is to reach students where they are in their academic journey to help them grow intellectually. In practical terms, she works with small groups of students and individuals to define their goals and aspirations and develop a support plan to make that happen.

Is a private school the best educational option for my child and my family? It’s a question parents often ask themselves.

While there’s no one right answer, private schools do offer a number of advantages. Here are some of the top reasons why a private school might be the right choice for your family.

“We bring the student into the equation rather than us telling them what they should be doing,” Parker says. As students get older, they take a bigger role in creating their own learning plans. “Students hold themselves accountable and we hold them accountable,” Parker adds.

3. Community ties. Parents like the sense of community that naturally comes with sending their children to a private school. Families often pick a school for similar reasons that relate to shared values and common interests. What they find are like-minded friends. When parent McMillan first visited Catherine Cook School, she sensed a good vibe and community feeling. “I genuinely felt it was a deep-knitted community and that was something I was looking for,” she says. “We’ve met exceptional families and we adore the faculty and staff.” Families looking for a certain type of education are often drawn to the same school and form a tight community. The Chicago Waldorf School, pre-kindergarten-12th grade, embraces the philosophy of creative thinking, problem solving and learning by doing. Festivals and ceremonies that bring the entire community together are a vital part of school life. Notably, Waldorf opened its new campus this fall in Andersonville in a renovated building that was previously occupied by a school.

4. Specialized education. Many private schools offer a faith-based education or a curriculum designed for a certain type of student. Here are several examples:• Daystar School is a non-traditional faith-based Christian school in Chicago’s South Loop. It currently offers pre-kindergarten through 8th grade with plans to launch a high school starting with 9th grade in 2019. Daystar has 350 students and teaches through the lens of Christianity, though it is not affiliated with any one denomination, says Tami Doig, head of school. Seventy percent of the students are Christian, but the student body is made up of a wide range of backgrounds of belief, she adds. “We want our students to know they are deeply loved and valued in God’s eyes and learn how to treat each other well.”

• Hyde Park Day School teaches children in grades 1-8 with learning differences. The school has campuses in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood and in north suburban Northfield.

A third campus opened in August 2018 in west suburban Lemont. “Our students are bright,” says Executive Director Casey Crnich. He explains that children with learning differences can thrive in a school where they are grouped with other children with similar challenges. “They don’t have to hide,” he says. The student to teacher ratio is 5:1. The curriculum includes traditional academic subjects as well as social and emotional learning. Students are taught how to self advocate.

Most students transition back to a traditional school after two to three years. “Students who come here learn what they need to excel,” Crnich says.

• The Chicago Academy for the Arts is a high school for the performing and visual arts. It is located in Chicago’s River West neighborhood and has about 150 students. They attend traditional academic classes from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Arts training is held from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Students participate in more than 100 productions throughout the school year, including concerts, plays, readings, screenings, recordings and exhibitions. “This is not a school for novices,” says Jason Patera, head of school. The application process includes an audition or a portfolio review. But, he adds, the first step is a “shadow day” during which an interested 8th grader can visit the school and determine if it’s the right fit. Kelly Boersma’s son, Evan, graduated from The Chicago Academy for the Arts in 2017 and is now at age 19 the youngest member of the Joffrey Ballet. “Evan always wanted to dance,” says Boersma, a public school principal. Since education is very important to Boersma, she wanted a high school for Evan that would combine arts and traditional academic work. “I wanted him to have those real school experiences,” she says. “We were looking for the perfect balance of education and arts.” Boersma’s daughter, Briley, also a dancer, is now enrolled at the school. “The combination of the drive of the student and the expertise of the staff opens doors to opportunities,” Boersma says.

5. Rigorous academics. Parents often choose private schools for their children because of the school’s reputation for academic success. For example, a number of private schools in the Chicago area offer the International Baccalaureate program, a world-recognized curriculum focused on independent thinking. Josephinum Academy of the Sacred Heart is an all-girls’ high school that offers the IB diploma program to all students in their junior and senior years. Other schools typically offer the IB

program, if available, only to honors students. Josephinum Academy is a Catholic school in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood. The school has 185 students. “The IB diploma is accessible to all students,” says Rekeeta Hampton, admissions manager at Josephinum Academy. “Our small size allows us to provide the resources to make all of our students successful.” Students receive bilingual education at Lycee Francais de Chicago, the French International School. Located in Chicago’s Ravenswood neighborhood, the school has 789 students in pre-kindergarten-12th grade. The school opened a new building three years ago. The early grades are taught mostly in French and gradually more English is introduced as students progress through the higher grades. A third language—Mandarin, Spanish or German—is introduced in 4th grade. By the time students graduate from high school they are tri-lingual, says Eric Verteau, president at Lycee. High school students can choose to follow either the French Baccalaureate or the IB diploma program, Verteau says. “It’s a competitive advantage.”

S chool size isn’t a one-size-fits-all proposition. Some students thrive in a small setting with lots of individual attention. Others flourish in

a big school with lots of different programs. Either way, parents and students have a variety of options. Fusion Academy offers one-to-one classrooms. Each student is paired with one teacher in each class. “We provide customized learning,” says Christian Kang, head of school, Fusion Academy Lincoln Park, which has about 50 students. With about 50 schools nationwide, Fusion Academy has additional Chicago-area locations in Evanston, Oak Brook and Lake Forest. Fusion Academy serves students year round in grades 6-12. Families choose Fusion Academy for several

reasons, Kang says. The student may have been falling through the cracks in a traditional school setting. The student may have a deep interest in one topic or have a special athletic or musical talent that requires a flexible schedule. Students have a different teacher for each subject, covering basics such as English, history, math and science. The school has a homework

café where students can finish their assignments and interact. Fusion Academy offers special features such as a recording arts studio. Traditional school offerings such as field trips and clubs are also available. “Our students rediscover a love of learning,” Kang says. Among the bigger schools, De La Salle Institute has about 850 students. The Catholic high school in Chicago is big enough to have many offerings, says John Brogan, director of admissions and academic dean of social sciences at De La Salle. Basic courses are supplemented with classes such as Mandarin, advanced art and statistics in sports, among others. More than 30 clubs are listed on the school’s website, including such diverse offerings as Girls Who Code and Mock Trial. “In a school our size, students can be a leader in the classroom or in extracurricular activities,” Brogan says, adding that classes are small, averaging about 24 students.

Consistent standards Large and small schools alike belong to the Lake Michigan Association of Independent Schools (LMAIS). The group has 35 member schools in the wider Chicago area. Independent schools are nonprofit and meet stringent accreditation standards. Independent schools provide a variety of educational opportunities from Montessori and Waldorf models to schools for the creative arts and special needs. “The range of schools offers parents the opportunity to select the school that

best meets the interests, ability and learning style of their child,” says Faith Caron, LMAIS executive director. With a no-cut policy and a good size student population, Sacred Heart Schools fields 25 basketball teams. The Catholic school is one of the larger private grade schools in Chicago, with about 700 students. Sacred Heart Schools offers kindergarten-8th grade. A new program for pre-schoolers opens in 2019. Both the kindergarten and pre-school are co-ed. The upper grades are divided by gender into two schools for academic classes. Lunch and recess are co-ed. “We have

the resources to provide an opportunity for students to be involved in different areas,” says Nat Wilburn, head of schools at Sacred Heart. Another advantage of the size of the school is its ability to provide need-based financial aid. This year, the school will award assistance of $2.5 million to families. Small schools have the flexibility to specialize. GCE Lab School, grades 9-12, has 50 students. GCE stands for Global Citizenship Experience. The Chicago school focuses on cultivating global citizens and offers an interdisciplinary project-based strategy. For example, a course might be built around sustainable development goals,

incorporating the elements of math, biology and world events. “The full-throated way that we integrate subjects is unique,” says Cabell King, head of school at GCE. GCE uses the City of Chicago as a resource. Students spend one day a week at locations scattered throughout the city to conduct field research. For example, students may visit with a public health official or test water in the Chicago River. “Our students are curious and motivated,” Cabell says, emphasizing the opportunity for personalized instruction. “Nobody hides or gets lost.”

“We provide customized learning.” -Christian Kang, head of school, Fusion Academy Lincoln Park

In the freshman Water course, GCE students measure their daily water usage and carry it from a local water source to understand the literal and figurative weight of their consumption.

As a single father who raised his daughter alone after the death of his wife, Jim Thiel could not be more proud of his daughter. She earned straight A’s all the way through high

school at Josephinum Academy of the Sacred Heart, a Catholic all-girls school in Chicago. Hard work and a rigorous academic program helped her land a spot after graduation at the Naval Academy Preparatory School, which readies students for the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. “My daughter got a good high school education,”

says Thiel, whose daughter recently finished naval basic training. “I am above proud of her.” Success depends on the basics of reading, writing and math. These are the fundamental skills that serve as the foundation of a solid education. Private schools often put their own spin on the basics. Though we live in the digital age, Catherine Cook School has a print-rich library and two librarians. The school offers pre-school-8th grade and is located in Chicago’s Old Town neighborhood.

See Waldorf in Action!

It’s how we teach that changes everything. The Chicago Waldorf School is redefining rigor. While traditional schools teach to the test, we provide real-world experience and, with a 100% college acceptance rate, get real-world results. Colleges want Waldorf students. On average, Waldorf students receive over $95,000 in merit-based scholarships per year. The power of challenge. It works.

Head of School Michael Roberts is a big believer in bound books. Technology is used to teach other subjects, but reading is taught with physical books. “We all live our lives through stories,” he says. “We want kids to have a relationship with print.” Roberts is most proud of the school’s new library that opened in 2013. It includes a story-time room where children can hear stories in a quiet environment. The centerpiece of the room is a throne with a red seat where the storyteller sits with the children gathered around. “It’s really a cool place for kids to learn to love reading and love books,” Roberts says. Private schools dive deep into the basics. Regina Dominican High School created an advanced placement calculus curriculum for two students. A math teacher works individually with each student. “We are able to be flexible in different ways to help students reach their educational goals,” says Kathleen Porreca, principal at Regina Dominican, an all-girls Catholic high school with 280 students in north suburban Wilmette. The school offers a number of advanced placement classes and an honors curriculum.

New math Schools today often look at math not as a way to build computational skills, but rather as a way to learn how to solve problems. GEMS World Academy Chicago uses the Singapore Math teaching method. “It’s a different conceptual framework,” says Tom Cangiano, head of school at GEMS, which offers pre-kindergarten through 10th grade this year. Another high school

grade is being added every year. A new building for grades 6-12 opens in 2019. Singapore Math, named after the island nation where it was developed, focuses on the mastery of a limited number of concepts each year. New concepts are introduced in successive years that build on the previous ones. Students perform well because they understand the material on a deep level, school administrators say. The Frances Xavier Warde School has developed a new math curriculum that incorporates many of the principles of Singapore Math. The Catholic school has two campuses in Chicago. The West Loop Old St. Patrick’s campus has pre-school-3rd grade. The Holy Name Cathedral campus on the Gold Coast offers 4th-8th grades. The school has a total of about 1,000 students and welcomes families of all ethnic, religious, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. The school provides need-based scholarships to 30 percent of its students. An audit of the math program concluded that using ideas based on the Singapore Math approach would help create a classroom environment to support students. “It’s important to encourage kids to take academic risks especially in math because some kids may hold back,” says Michael Kennedy, head of school at Frances Xavier Warde. “We want students to be actively engaged in the learning process.” Part of that process is teaching kids “soft skills,” though Kennedy prefers the term “essential skills.” These are attributes such as perseverance, how to deal with failure, and self advocacy that can

apply to both academic and social situations, Kennedy explains. “We want the kind of environment in the classroom where students will not hesitate to raise their hands.”

Literacy skillsSchools are taking innovative approaches to reading and writing. Greg Mooney has three daughters who attend The Frances Xavier Warde School. He likes the fact that the kindergarten-2nd grade classrooms have two teachers. A special literacy teacher visits each classroom every day. “The school’s intention is to meet diverse learning needs,” says Mooney, executive director of the Comer Education Campus, a youth enrichment GEMS World Academy

and college initiative on Chicago’s South Side. “My kids love it there.” GEMS World Academy Chicago uses the reading and writing program developed by the Teachers College at Columbia University. GEMS also offers the highly regarded International Baccalaureate Program for the primary grades through high school. “We are getting kids to think critically,” Cangiano says, adding that the school provides financial assistance to families that qualify. Sacred Heart Schools, a Catholic grade school in Chicago, takes a developmental approach. “Our program is based on what our students are developmentally ready to do,” says Marjie Murphy, director of curriculum and instruction at Sacred Heart. For example, the writing program follows rubrics the teacher can use to determine if a student is at grade level, or above or below that level. How are students using ideas? How are the ideas organized? How fluent is the student with sentences? Do they vary in structure? “It helps us understand what the child needs,” Murphy says. Teachers are clear about the expectations

for writing assignments. Students are taught to consider how voice or the author’s writing style can vary depending on whether the composition is a narrative, opinion or informational piece. Beyond the basics, students have the opportunity to be more creative and try different types of writing, such as poetry. “All these mini-skills add up to bigger skills,” Murphy says.

Chicago City Day School also takes a developmental approach. The Chicago school offers junior kindergarten-8th grade and has 200 students. Children are grouped by level in math and reading. For example, an 8th grader may be in pre-algebra, algebra or geometry, depending on how he or she has progressed. Head of School Galeta Clayton says, “Students learn at the pace they are ready to learn.”

Kids love social media. Look no further than the dining room table as they chat with their friends instead of the family.

While social media can be a distraction, schools are taking a nuanced approach to the sharing platforms. Schools use social media to promote their own mission and give outsiders a window into their world. But schools also try to teach students about responsible online behavior. Few schools ban the use of social media outright. “Social media is not going away,” says Martin Moran, lead designer and director of the upper school at Bennett Day School, Chicago. Teaching kids about social media is like teaching fish about water, he says. “Social media is everywhere.” Bennett Day School conducts official outreach to the wider community using several social media sites, including Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn. The school currently offers pre-kindergarten-4th grade. A high school program opens next year. A lower grade is also being added each year. The school is in the West Loop and has 190 students.

Social media has a major impact on the emotions of students, Moran says. He has experience teaching classes to students about the sociology of the modern internet. The classes have also been offered to parents who struggle with the rules around the use of social media. The sessions are designed to teach kids how social media works, and how images and words placed in certain places can affect the way the message is interpreted. “How do we mitigate that?” Moran asks. “We are trying to educate kids about the grammar of social media rather than saying it is good or bad.” Social media in the early grades doesn’t present many problems, school administrators say. But many schools introduce the idea of responsible social media use to young students. It’s woven into the curriculum around how to treat people with respect no matter where the interaction takes place. Troubles can emerge as students get older and more attached to their phones. web in class and online bullying can easily get out of hand.

Schools have rulesMost schools have guidelines on the use of social media. “We limit the use of phones,” says Megan Stanton-Anderson, principal at DePaul College Prep, a Catholic high school in Chicago. Phones should be invisible and silent, she explains. Phones should be in the student’s bag or pocket and should not be heard in school. The one exception is lunchtime when students can check their phones. Earbuds are also banned. “Research tells us students need to focus,” Stanton-Anderson says. “Having another input into your brain is a distraction.” Last year, DePaul College Prep piloted an app called Apple Classroom. Using iPads, teachers can guide students through a lesson and check on their progress. The teacher can also tell if the student has logged on to an unrelated site and quickly get them back on track. Conversations about social media fit nicely with DePaul College Prep’s vision statement that the school strives to create an educated, compassionate and just world, one student at a time. “We try to draw parallels,” Stanton-Anderson says. Students are taught to treat each other in the same respectful manner whether the interaction is online or face-to-face. Like many schools, Francis W. Parker doesn’t use social media to formally connect with parents and students. The school has social media sites to

reach the wider community, but communication with parents and students is handled through secure school portals, emails and letters. “The real connection takes place in the classroom and at events,” notes Nick Saracino, the school’s communications director. Francis W. Parker School is a private school in Lincoln Park with 940 students in junior kindergarten-12th grade. Parker students all receive iPads in the 6th grade. Technology rules, guidelines and acceptable use policies are also introduced then. “We want them to be good digital citizens,” Saracino says. Experts are brought into the school to talk to students about the legal ramifications of social media, bullying prevention, and how to manage their own digital footprint. “A couple silly mistakes can follow you a long time,” Saracino says. Parker students are allowed to use phones in their spare time in school but not in class. In middle school, students are required to keep their phones in their lockers. In the upper grades, students can keep their phones in their bags. The idea is to instill a sense of trust in the students and teach them how to navigate the rules. Modeling behavior is important, too, Saracino says. He has two children at the school. Busy parents who spend dinner time on their phones are not sending the right message. “We all need to think about what we’re doing,” he adds.

Global outreachSocial media platforms make it possible to connect with faraway families.

Lake Forest Academy, a boarding and day high school in Lake Forest, has 435 students. International students make up 26 percent of the student body, representing 34 countries. The school uses social media in foreign countries to reach families. For example, WeChat is a popular social media app in China and the school uses it to engage with the families of

students, and to reach prospective Chinese students. KakaoTalk, a popular social media channel in South Korea, is used to communicate with parents there. “We use a variety of platforms,” says Grace Kim, dean of communications, Lake Forest Academy. In sophomore year, students attend a digital citizenship program. Kim discusses privacy and

the school’s director of information technology talks about security. “We are instilling the idea that the students need to use their profiles wisely. The student handbook details the school’s anti-harassment policies. In senior year, as students begin the transition to college, students set up a LinkedIn profile with the help of school counselors and the alumni director. Once seniors graduate, they can join the LinkedIn alumni group. “It’s a great way to network,” Kim says. A frustration is keeping up with the changes, school administrators say. Students are constantly trying new apps that fade in and out of popularity. “It’s constantly evolving,” says Tom Cangiano, head of school, GEMS World Academy Chicago. The school offers pre-kindergarten-10th grade this year. A new high school grade is being added every year. A new building for grades 6-12 opens in 2019. The school and the parents have the responsibility to understand which apps kids are using and what they are doing online, Cangiano says. “We need to stay up to speed,” he notes. Good social media behavior is embedded in the curriculum from an early age, Cangiano adds. “We want to make sure they are good digital citizens.”

“We are trying to educate kids about the grammar of social media rather than saying it is good or bad.” - Martin Moran, lead designer and director of the upper school, Bennett Day School, Chicago.

Once squeezed into a few weeks of the physical education curriculum, health classes never used to get much attention. But schools are expanding the scope of their health offerings

with an emphasis on all-around wellness and emotional fitness. The new approach includes healthy food and classes on nutrition. Physical education classes often now feature fitness equipment and personalized routines instead of group exercises. “We want our students to have healthy habits,” says Rob Wennington, athletic director, Guerin Prep, a co-ed Catholic high school in River Grove. Perhaps the biggest change is the emphasis on social and emotional development. Students at Lake Forest Academy, a day and boarding high school in Lake Forest, participate in a seminar program that addresses a number of social and emotional issues faced by teens. Outside experts

are brought in to talk about topics such as chemical dependency. One seminar class teaches mindfulness, along with meditation and breathing techniques to promote relaxation “The program works,” says Chris Tennyson, assistant head of school and dean of students and academic affairs, Lake Forest Academy. “Students have the opportunity to think and reflect on the topics.” Emotional learning begins at an early age at the British International School of Chicago, Lincoln Park. The school offers pre-kindergarten-5th grade and has about 520 students. The school uses the international primary curriculum, which emphasizes 22 positive values. To highlight the values, the school has created eight cartoon characters that represent the characteristics of communication, cooperation, respect, resilience, morality, thoughtfulness, curiosity and adaptability. Each cartoon character acts as a visual reminder of the characteristics

it represents. For example, the character for resilience carries a shield. A character is introduced at an all-school assembly every Monday. Lessons for the week incorporate discussions about the characteristics that make up that character, why the world needs people with that characteristic, and how students feel when they demonstrate the characteristic. “It has greatly helped the children,” says Kirsty Gallo, assistant head-community and well being, British International School of Chicago, Lincoln Park. “Since we have introduced this program, the children are more able to identify their feelings and the characteristics within themselves.”

Building personal strengthThe social and emotional needs of students are a top priority at The Avery Coonley School. It is a school for gifted children from nursery school through 8th grade. The school is located in Downers Grove and has about 350 students. “We like to say we are a school of like-minded peers,” says Paul Druzinsky, head of school, Avery Coonley. “In our school, students see themselves in each other.” Most classes for gifted children at public schools are part of so-called “pull-out” programs, he explains. Students are taken out of regular classes to receive special one-on-one instruction, or they are grouped with older kids. In contrast, students at Avery Coonley are taught with peers. That’s important, Druzinsky notes, because intellectually bright children still need time to develop emotional and socially in a group of peers. “A 3rd grader should not be grouped with an 8th grader,” he says. “You may have a great football player at age eight, but they won’t play on a high school team.” Teachers at Avery Coonley understand some of the pressures experienced by very bright children, such as perfectionist tendencies that can heighten anxiety. “Our teachers speak to those needs,” Druzinsky says. “We feel social and emotional development is so important.” Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart, an all-girls Catholic boarding and day school in Lake Forest, has an advisory program. A group of seven to 10 girls works with an advisor who takes the girls through their high school experience. The advisor challenges the girls academically and helps them make wise choices. “Girls learn best when they are loved, cared for and known,” says Christine Schmidt, principal, Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart.

The school has about 130 students and is situated on 44 acres that include walking trails and playing fields. Classes are scheduled in 80-minute blocks which provide extra time for the physical education and fitness programs. Students at Woodlands Academy are enrolled in a seminar program to teach them the skills they need to succeed, such as how to resolve conflicts, how to manage difficult conversations, and how to build leadership skills. Other topics include cyber safety, self defense and mental health topics. “We address the whole student,” Schmidt says. “We make sure our students get a great education and develop in all areas.”

Relationships make the differenceGCE Lab School, a small high school in Chicago that emphasizes hands-on educational experiences, has a social and emotional learning block once a week. Students meet in a group with the school counselor to talk about good decision making and the individual pressures they’re feeling. “They’re building relationships with the counselor so they feel comfortable talking to her,” says Cabell King, head of school, GCE Lab School. La Lumiere School, a college preparatory Catholic boarding and day school in La Porte, Indiana, has a full time director of wellness who provides counseling to students. “We keep the conversation going,” says Adam Kronk, head of school, La Lumiere. He notes that students growing up in a high-pressure environment focused on getting into a select college often haven’t taken the time to grow as a person. “Students get into college and they’re miserable and they don’t know why,” Kronk says. The wellness director at La Lumiere works with students to help them lead more balanced lives. Discussions address topics such as the use of social media, sleep and substance abuse. Students also have a faculty advisor who serves as a quarterback and advocate for the student. The advisor is a good point person for the parents as well, Kronk notes. All-school assemblies at the beginning of the day allow time to discuss difficult topics. The day after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, students discussed their feelings about the situation. With about 200 students, La Lumiere is small enough to address topics that impact the school community. “Education happens best within the context of relationships where you know one another,” Kronk says. “People become people through people.”

Heather Bartell likes the fact that her three children can actively participate in a variety of sports at North Shore Country Day School, a private school

in Winnetka with junior kindergarten-12th grade. Students at the school don’t just participate, however. Some compete at a high level. Bartell’s daughter was on the school’s soccer and field hockey teams that competed in the finals for the state championship. Her daughter also sings in the musicals, participated in the model United Nations, started a club and doubled up on science classes, where she excels. Bartell’s other two children are just as active as their older sister. “Students can be multi-sport athletes,” says Bartell, a former finance professional. “But they can also perform in the arts, take AP classes and still have time for family and friends. My children have been able to fully embrace all parts of the school.” She likens the school’s thoughtful approach to a “magic formula” that creates the right environment for success in the classroom, on the field, and in life.

Private schools typically take a somewhat different approach to athletics than public schools. Instead of selecting the best athletes for teams, private schools tend to encourage broad participation. If the school also happens to field a competitive team, that’s a big plus. “Our philosophy is participation for all,” says Tom Flemma, head of school, North Shore Country Day School, which has about 540 students. “It’s important for kids to have the opportunity to play and compete.” Students all have physical education every day. Team sports start in the 6th grade. Participation in the interscholastic athletics program is required from 6th through 11th grades. Some of the sports offered include soccer and basketball, baseball, tennis, volleyball, and track and field. North Shore Country Day competes in the Independent School League of the greater Chicago area, which

includes Elgin Academy, Francis W. Parker School and Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart. North Shore Country Day has three seasons of athletics. “If you want to be on a team, you’re on a team,” says Flemma, whose 9th grade daughter joined the field hockey team. “We have a huge percentage of kids who compete on multiple teams and in multiple seasons.”

Everyone playsFrancis W. Parker, a private school in Lincoln Park with junior kindergarten-12th grade, offers more than 50 no-cut teams. “Everyone can play,” says Nick Saracino, communications director. The no-cut policy is important because it gives every student the chance to learn discipline, self-confidence and sportsmanship. It also helps students learn empathy for others by cheering them on to attain their personal best, Saracino says. About 75 percent of students play a sport in 6th grade. But as they grow, many students tend to find other extracurricular interests. “They try everything until they find what appeals to them,” Saracino says. This year, Francis W. Parker has added a Quiz Bowl sponsored by the Illinois High School Athletic Association. Students will compete in an academic knowledge tournament something like the television show Jeopardy. “Not everything is about brawn,” Saracino says.

At British International School of Chicago, South Loop, all students are welcome to join the sports teams, and everyone has the chance to play during the season. The school offers nursery through 12th grade and has more than 600 students. Athletic facilities include a 9,000-square-foot gym and outdoor soccer pitch. Some of the sports offered include basketball, soccer, volleyball, and track and field, as well as cheerleading and dance squads. The school competes in the Chicago Area Middle Schools League and Illinois High School Association. Students also compete in the Global Games, sponsored by Nord Anglia Education, the family of 56 worldwide schools that includes the British International School of Chicago, South Loop, and its local sister school the British International School of Chicago, Lincoln Park. The Global Games is a five-day multi-sport event for students in grades 6-8 from 14 Nord Anglia schools in North America. The event is held at Windermere Preparatory School near Orlando. Schools are adding artificial turf fields because of the popularity of sports, such as lacrosse, field hockey and soccer. Lake Forest Academy is finishing up work on new turf fields. Funds were raised for the fields at the school’s spring gala. In June, Josephinum Academy of the Sacred Heart, an all-girls Catholic high school in Chicago, opened a newly renovated softball field on campus. The project was funded largely by a Cubs Charities Diamond Project Grant.

Friendships that lastBuilding camaraderie is a big part of athletics, school administrators say. At La Lumiere School, a Catholic boarding and day high school in La Porte, Indiana, the 200 students are divided into four teams—something like the Hogwarts Houses in the Harry Potter book series. The teams are mixed by age and compete throughout the year in a variety of contests. The best team at the end of the year wins the coveted “Head’s Cup.” The program helps students identify with kids of all ages. “I’ve never seen a high school where the student’s class isn’t that important,” says Adam Kronk, head of school, La Lumiere School. Known in athletics for its boy’s basketball program, La Lumiere holds its student athletes to high academic standards, Kronk says. He adds that the school offers 14 other team sports. Mount Carmel High School is a Catholic, all-boys school in Chicago with 600 students. The school excels in athletics and has won 12 state high school football championships. Mount Carmel offers 17 different sports.

Athletics is important to the school’s philosophy of how to educate boys. “Boys need activity,” says Dan LaCount, athletic director at Mount Carmel. Students involved in athletics also tend to focus on their grades. They don’t want to let their teammates down, he adds. Graduating athletes who go on to play in college are celebrated and their photos are displayed at the school. “They inspire the younger students who are here now,” LaCount says. Many private schools have a large campus, which can be an advantage for an athletic program. Guerin College Preparatory High School in River Grove has 23 acres of land. The Catholic co-ed school has about 300 students. The campus has two gyms, a football field, and softball and baseball diamonds. “We offer 14 different sports across three seasons,” says Rob Wennington, athletic director at Guerin Prep. The school competes in the Metro Suburban Conference of the Illinois High School Association. Wennington likes the fact that conference includes both Catholic and public high schools. “It’s a healthy mix,” he says.

It is fitting that this campus which housed one of the first progressive schools in the country, once again fosters the same approach.
