THE EXPEDITION EXPERIENCE We explore remote locations on the Tasmanian coast that are hard to get to or rarely seen by tourists. The perspective of travelling by sea provides an invigorating experience of this rugged and striking coastline.

Our shore excursions are designed to promote environmental and cultural appreciation and learning, and our small group size ensures that your experience is personal, with minimal impact on the environments we visit. We aim to provide one or two activities or excursions each day, all included in your cruise fare. Expedition leaders and lecturers who are experts in the region accompany every voyage, providing commentary on culture, geology, conservation, history, and the region’s unique plants and wildlife to help you connect with this special place.

TASMANIAAustralia’s island state is poised at the edge of the world. From its green coast, the Great Southern Ocean stretches uninterrupted until it breaks on the shores of Antarctica. But here in Tasmania, rugged mountains and impenetrable forests lead to coastlines of soaring cliffs, pastoral farmlands, and islands teeming with native wildlife. Clear, crisp air and warm summers nurture a bountiful variety of fresh produce, cheeses, wine, and spirits, and history from ancient to colonial times is present around each corner.

AN ADVENTURE BY SEAOur expedition cruise over seven nights explores the incredible south-east region in the summer months. From the sea, enjoy easy access to National Parks and World Heritage Areas, led by our expert Expedition Team. Experience coastal hikes from Freycinet Peninsula to isolated Port Davey - only accessible by boat, seven-day hike or light aircraft - and absorb the surreal beauty and history of Maria Island, Bruny Island, and Port Arthur over days

“The destination was Melaleuca, to see the endangered orange-bellied parrot. The cruise up the backwater was a treat; tannin rich waters and blue sky created perfect reflections, and the beautiful scene was backed by huge vast mountain ranges. This area is famous for the exploits of Deny King, tin miner and pioneer, who lived here for 55 years. It is largely due to Deny that this area - and the orange-bellied parrot - are protected.”

TASMAN NATIONAL PARK

Feel small again as you gaze up at the 300 metre sea cliffs and monumental rock formations of Tasman National Park, the highest in the Southern Hemisphere. See the sea stacks – tall dolerite formations - stand tall, and view the Tasman Arch, The Candlestick and Cathedral from perfect positions at sea. An area of huge natural diversity, it is possible to find Australian Fur Seals “hauling out” on the rocky shore at Tasman Island, as well as dolphins and albatross which are often sighted in this region. Visit Fortescue Bay and have the option of a coastal hike past the man ferns and gullies of the Tasman Trail or kayaking around the William Pitt Wreck in Canoe Bay.

PORT ARTHUR HISTORIC SITE

A unique experience awaits at the UNESCO World Heritage listed Port Arthur Historic Site. Between 1833 and 1877, the penal colony housed Britain’s worst criminals, and was considered inescapable. Today, the Historic Site has over 30 buildings, ruins and restored period homes set in 100 acres of landscaped grounds. In the company of Port Arthur’s knowledgeable guides, join an exclusive ‘behind the scenes tour’ of the site, which includes access to private collections and historic buildings not accessible to the general public.

WOODBRIDGE AND HUON

At times the mercurial weather of the Tasmanian coast may necessitate activities ashore within the protected bays and rivers. Weather options may include cruising the Huon River and a visit to the Wooden Boat Centre at picturesque Franklin. Learn about the process of sheep cheese-making at the family-run Grandvewe Cheeses, and at the cellar door enjoy a taste of their ‘ewenique’ sheep’s whey vodka.

DAY 7: ARRIVE HOBART

Disembark in Hobart at 8:00amA post cruise transfer to city or airport is included.

DAY 1: DEPART HOBART

DAYS 2-7:

No two Tasmanian cruises with Coral Expeditions will be the same; each expedition is crafted by our experienced Masters and Expedition Leaders to take advantage of the best weather conditions for each day. Below is a selection of the key destinations we visit.

PORT DAVEY AND BATHURST HARBOURA marine reserve, and part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, Port Davey is Tasmania untouched. If conditions allow, guests will spend up to two full days exploring this pristine wilderness, and enjoy the unforgettable experience of kayaking in Bramble Cove. Otherwise accessible only via a seven-day hike or charter flight, Port Davey feels like an endless unchartered wilderness, full of sheltered bays filled with endemic marine life. In Port Davey, you’ll disembark to explore the ‘Narrows’ aboard our tender and take a guided hike of Balmoral Hill or the Mount Beattie Track. Take in the surrounds of Melaleuca and the Needwonnee Walk, named after the traditional custodians whose homelands extended throughout this area, and you may be lucky to catch a glimpse of the rare orange-bellied parrot, endemic to the region.

BRUNY ISLAND AND ADVENTURE BAYExperience the rugged beauty of Fluted Cape as you walk along the sheer coastal cliffs or cruise in our Xplorer vessel for a closer look around Penguin Island. Learn about the rich maritime history of Adventure Bay at the Bligh Museum of Pacific Exploration, or explore the history of old whaling stations on the way to Grassy Point.

FREYCINET NATIONAL PARK

The Freycinet Peninsula is spectacular. Pink granite forms the foundation of the Hazard Mountains, and the sweeping bays are backed by eucalypt forests. Join an optional guided hike to the Wineglass Bay beach - one of the most breathtaking beaches in the world. As we cruise south of Freycinet, witness numerous fur seals lounging on the rocks on the Ile des Phoques, a small rocky island between Freycinet Peninsula and Maria Island.

MARIA ISLAND NATIONAL PARK

The historic ruins, secluded bays, and cliffs of Maria Island National Park are home to a thriving population of wildlife that includes Forester Kangaroos, Bennetts Wallabies, and wombats. Walk to historic Darlington Settlement and the convict ruins at Point Lesueur, explore the ancient seabeds of the Fossil Cliffs, and marvel at the sandstone formations of the Painted Cliffs.
