Have you seen our Triptik yet?
As many of you know, my family and I like to travel. That love started early for Beth and me. In our married life, it has
taken us to every state in the Union and some foreign countries too. Before each trip, we have a ritual we follow, though it has
changed a bit through the years. We used to go to AAA to stock up on TripTiks and tour books, but now we just use our past
experiences, GPS and computer to highlight the “must see” things we “can’t miss.” Our most satisfying trips are the ones
where we’ve had some advanced planning. But planning can only go so far. It helps, but it isn’t everything. The trips we
remember the best were the ones where things didn’t go as planned, where we discovered surprises along the way: almost
bumping into a buffalo while coming out of a bathhouse in North Dakota, having our Alaskan guide get us uncomfortably up-
close and personal with a moose and her calves, finding a vintage board game store in Vermont, fixing flat tires outside of
Minneapolis and Detroit and Chicago, nursing an overheated van through Colorado’s Vail Pass, while being passed by
bicyclists, after a full day of travel seeing the lunar landscape of the Badlands by the light of a full-moon, eating the best fish
and chips I’ve ever tasted while sitting on a rock in the rain on Scotland’s Isle of Skye. All these experiences have blessed,
bonded us together as a family and whetted our appetites for what lies around the next corner.
Our Long Ranging Planning ministry and Council has been hard at work for several months, listening closely to you,
praying, discussing and refining the Triptik Prince of Peace will be using for its future. They’ve discovered some of the
incredible blessings the Lord has given us and have been excited about the surprises that have been discovered along the
way. We’ve just concluded a discernment and discovery process. I would encourage you to go to our website at
www.popappleton.org for the full report. Consider this our congregational Triptik. It won’t tell you every place we will be going,
but it will tell you some big destinations that are ahead, as well as some things to celebrate along the way — but most
importantly it will give us a general direction — and if our hearts are tuned to God, we will discover wonderful and surprising
things ahead.
As you read this report, I want to ask you to do one thing in particular. I want you simply to PRAY! I want you to pray
that you may see this as not just a trip that our guides, our leaders, are going to insist we follow, nor will it be a straight path
from where we are to where we think we should go. I don’t want you to be committed to one particular path or outcome. See
this as permission to explore some new directions, try new things, anticipate a new future, but be prepared for some detours.
Always let us be open to the Lord’s guidance and the Spirit’s inspiration. Pray for us all! Pray for vision to recognize and
celebrate the surprises along the way. Expect to see God in each step of our paths and we will. Trust our Good Shepherd to
lead us to where He wants us to be. So let’s lace up our boots, get our walking sticks, grab our Bibles, program our GPS, not for
the fastest trip, but for where the Lord wants to lead us – and then let’s go! God has some surprises ahead for all of us!
Joy,
Update from the Call Committee
The Call Committee has gotten underway! In late June we met with Council, the Bishop and a member of the Bishop’s staff to
better understand the call process and ask questions. Here are key steps in the process:
1. The Call Committee completes the Ministry Site Profile (MSP), a lengthy document that provides details on Prince of Peace
and what it is we are seeking in a new pastor. This is sent to the Bishop once complete. We intend to have this document
completed and in the hands of the Bishop by late August.
2. The Bishop uses the MSP to identify potential pastoral candidates that he believes meet our requirements. He will provide
us with a list of 3 to 5 candidates, probably in September. A KEY POINT: WE CAN ONLY INTERVIEW CANDIDATES
REFERRED TO US BY THE BISHOP. There is a process to nominate potential candidates to the Bishop, and we’ll share this
in the near future.
3. The Call Committee reviews candidates’ paperwork and conducts initial interviews. Follow-up interviews are conducted
with the strongest candidates. We anticipate this will begin in late September/early October and extend for weeks. We
have begun developing the criteria we will use in the interview process to identify the right pastoral candidate.
4. If we find the right candidate in this first round of applicants we could be done in the 4th quarter. If not, we will continue
looking at others until we find the right pastor for Prince of Peace.
We will be sharing more information with you in the coming weeks. We plan to set up a process to answer questions you might
have.

Sue Evers (Chair), Kris Gurholt, Pat Hayes, Joel Landsverk, Erin Larson, Andrew Skowanderson, Dean Gruner, Mike
Kalinowski, Peggy Miller-Kinderman and Pastor Roger McQuistion.

PRINCE OF PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH 3
Letter from Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton
“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
(1 Corinthians 13:7)
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Grace and peace to you in the name of the crucified and risen Christ.
Last week the U.S. Supreme Court rendered its decision announcing the right of same-gender couples to have equal access
to marriage. For many members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, this decision is a welcome sign of hope and
a time for celebration. Other members of this church do not agree with the court’s decision and remain deeply concerned
because of their understanding of Scripture.
This decision affects each of us, some profoundly, and we are not of one mind. Let us continue to accompany one another
with prayer, love and mutual respect as we reflect on this new reality and remember Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians about the
enduring power of God’s love. The ELCA social statement “Human Sexuality: Gift and Trust” (2009) neither endorses nor
forbids same-gender marriages and recognizes that we have differing understandings and convictions on this matter. In its
decision, the court stated that “the First Amendment ensures that religious organizations and persons are given proper
protection as they seek to teach the principles that are so fulfilling and so central to their lives and faiths.”
According to this church’s social statement on human sexuality, all decisions about recognizing, supporting and holding
publicly accountable same-gender relationships are entrusted to congregations. Recognizing that the church is not of one
mind on this subject, our 2009 actions provide that congregations and clergy should discern together whether to recognize
such relationships and to what degree.
Pastors are to engage in conversation, discernment and partnership with the congregations who have called them prior to
solemnizing or presiding over a same-gender marriage. On the other hand, no pastor is obligated to solemnize the marriage
of any couple, same-gender or different-gender, whom the pastor cannot in good conscience marry.
As Lutheran Christians, we continue to be a church that engages in conversation
and discernment in all aspects of our faith and life. Creating space for respectful
conversation and dialogue continues to be an important part of our life together. A
helpful resource for engaging in difficult conversations is “Talking Together as
Christians about Tough Social Issues.” In addition, the ELCA Ministry to and with
Same-Gender Couples and their Families Working Group remains in the process of
completing its work. A report of the group’s findings and possible
recommendations will be presented to the ELCA Church Council at its November
meeting.
We seek to see our differences as a gift to be celebrated as we live out that which
unites us: the mercy and grace of Jesus Christ who leads us into mission and
ministry in the world. In the midst of this change, we are first and foremost church
– a church that proclaims the good news of Jesus Christ. May God bless, guide and
strengthen you each day as you go in peace and serve the Lord.
Your Sister in Christ,
The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton
Presiding Bishop, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

AUGUST 2015 | FROM THE FILES
ELCA Malaria Campaign--- PoP has been a leader Our ELCA national church is in the last year of a 5-year $15 million campaign to "Make Malaria History!" The ELCA has raised
$14,600,000 so far and hopes to reach the $15 million goal by January 2016. We have only $400,000 more to raise. That is
GOOD NEWS indeed! Our African partner churches have already used the money raised for bed nets, educational resources,
medicines and other methods to limit mosquitoes. They report that more children are healthy, more women have healthy
pregnancies, less people are ill and unproductive, and less people are dying! They can see the impact of our malaria campaign.
The churches are rejoicing and send their THANKS!
We also recently announced that our East Central Synod had set a stretch goal of raising $300,000 for malaria. The ECSW has
raised that amount and surpassed it's goal!! We have much to be proud about and together congregations in East Central
Synod of Wisconsin are creating history-- we are helping to make malaria history!
The national ELCA Malaria Campaign staff wrote to PoP in early July, "I was just looking at my list of congregations who have
supported the ELCA Malaria Campaign --and I thought you might be interested to know that Prince of Peace is in the top 100 of
all ELCA congregations! (Number 92, to be exact--you have already given more than $8,000!) Please do extend our gratitude to
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church for their extravagant generosity to the ELCA Malaria Campaign. I think it's something to be
proud of that your church family is among the most generous congregations in the whole ELCA when it comes to malaria!"
More information is available at www.elca.org/malaria. We plan to show more videos to tell how your contributions are helping
save lives. We are making malaria history in partnership with our
African brothers and sisters! 5 PRINCE OF PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH

Grades 3 - 6: 30 centimeter rulers (may have inches on
one side), packs of black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink,
please), 70-sheet ruled notebooks – we need LOTS of
notebooks since 4 go into one kit!
Worship Notes Sunday School students entering grades 3-6 in the fall –
this is for you! When you attend church services this
summer, fill out an “I Attended Church Today” worship note
form and you’ll have a head start on your expectations for
the fall. The forms can be found in the bin under the
Sunday School Bulletin Board in the narthex.
Sunday School Superstars Don’t forget to check out the photo board outside the 2nd
grade classroom. You can see some of the things that our
kids are busy with during the year as they learn and grow
with Jesus. There are all new VBS pictures up from June. As
pictures are removed from the board they will placed
outside Katie’s office for you; there are many to take. I will
have them up through September.
AUGUST 2015 • PRINTS OF PEACE 6
Our confirmation ministry is getting a face-lift this year!
We’re excited to introduce a new (to us) curriculum from
Faith Inkubators called “Head 2 Heart.” It takes us deep
into God’s Word and into the promises these young people
are preparing to make when they affirm their baptisms.
Using small groups, we will grow not only closer to God, but
to our adult leaders and to our fellow group members!
Parents – we need you! We need small group leaders for
our two class groups this year (7th & 8th, and 9th). Pair with
another adult to lead simple yet meaningful conversations
with 5-7 youth. It’s a great opportunity to grow in your own
faith as well! Talk to Gloria for more info.
The 2015-2016 Confirmation Handbook will be available
on the church website in mid-August. It will also be included
in the email with registration information. Be on the look
out!
For 7th-8th grade Families: •We are offering two options for orientation this month:
Wednesday, August 26 or Sunday, August 30 – both at
6:30pm. This orientation is for both the student AND
parents. Please RSVP to Gloria so she knows how many
people to prepare materials for on the 26th and 30th.
•Registration information has been emailed to 7th-8th grade
families in our database. If you have not received this
mailing but are interested in enrolling your son/daughter in
our Head 2 Heart Confirmation Ministry, please contact
Gloria Allhiser ASAP! She will get you the info you need.
•Introducing… a new Bible! For children and youth faith
formation at Prince of Peace we are transitioning to using
the new Common English Bible. New confirmation youth will
receive the CEB Student Bible ($25).

Sunday School Volunteers Sign-Up Anyone interested in signing up to help with Sunday School
for the 2015-2016 school year is invited to sign up now!
Our focus will be on discussing the Word that we heard in
the worship service and sharing our own thoughts and
questions with each other. Table Guides for 1st-3rd and for
4th-6th grades will be needed. Any 6th grader who would like
to be a table guide is welcome to sign up. Any confirmation
students, high school students, young, mid, or older adults
are welcome to participate. All you need is faith (you
already have that because you are here) and a heart (since
you are walking and talking you have a working heart). I will
still have a simple format for you to follow at each table.
Feel free to contact Katie for more information or questions
at [email protected] or call 739-5255.
Sunday School Volunteer Training Volunteer training for Sunday School will take place on
Sunday, August 30 from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm in the
Community Room. All Table Guides should plan on
attending – bring your calendars since we will work out the
schedules at this time. Please contact Katie at
[email protected] if you cannot attend.
Fall Sunday School Mission Project We are going to join forces with the WELCA ladies as they
gather supplies for the Lutheran World Relief School Kits.
Sunday School students are asked to bring school supplies
to Sunday School in September – we know you’ll be
shopping for these items when they are on sale and we
hope you can help with the kits. Please check the list below
to see what your grade should bring and feel free to bring
other items on the list as well if you would like.

Begalske, Dave Morton, Alice Anderson and Jackie Barndt
PLEASE NOTE: Those of you working at Salvation Army do
NOT have to be there until 10:00 a.m. the morning you are
scheduled to work.
We Have to Say Goodbye! It has been a growth-filled year for Prince of Peace
and Cheryl Davis, as she has served as our Intern.
She has been involved in all aspects of ministry at
PoP, and has touched many lives and hearts.
Cheryl's final Sunday with us will be August 9th.
Please plan to worship with us that day, and stay
following the services to wish Cheryl and Horace well
on their next adventure, and thank them for sharing
their lives and passion with us!
Fall New
Member Classes Are you considering joining
Prince of Peace? Mark your
calendars for the upcoming new
member classes. New member
classes are scheduled from
November 1st through November 22nd.
An informational letter will be sent out at the end of
September to all individuals or families who are
interested in joining.
The Witness Ministry is implementing a “mentor”
program for the new members. If you would like to be
a mentor for the fall new member class, interested
becoming a member or would like additional
information, please contact Bridgetta Wingender at
882-0057 or Cindy Romnek at 739-5255.
Notification of Hospital Admissions Recently we have not had reliable communication
from the local hospitals when PoP members are
admitted. This has been brought to their attention,
but we also encourage you to let us know when you
or a family member are hospitalized. The office
number is 739-5255. Thank you.
Christmas in August 2015 Deadline is August 9th! Please help our children, ages 5-14, from Outagamie County start
school with a new set of clothes, shoes and haircut. Have you taken
an ornament or cash envelope from the trees in the entryways yet?
If you have, please place your item of clothing under the trees with
the ornament attached by August 9th. Use the envelopes from the
trees for your cash donations and place them in the collection plate.
Checks should be written to Prince of Peace with "Christmas in
August" in the memo line. The cash donations will be used to
purchase remaining clothing and pay for the Rogan shoes and
NewStyle Salon haircut invoices.
Christmas in August is coordinated by the Social Concerns Ministry
with Outagamie County Health and Human Services. The children
and Social Concerns thank you for your help with our program. As
always, call or email Nette Kimball at 851-4032 or
[email protected] with any questions.
Thank you so much for your generosity! This program could not
happen without the support of the congregation of Prince of Peace
Lutheran Church.
Fox Valley Islamic Society You are cordially invited to the Fox Valley Islamic Society Annual
Interfaith Gathering on Sunday, August 9 from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m.
This is a FREE event where you can “learn—interact—and eat” while

The members of the mosque in our area warmly invite us to join
them. Many attend and learn from each other, but there is still
room for you and others. Why not accept their invitation this year!
The group consists of Christians, Jews, Muslims and others faiths,
all seeking to understand each other better. We hear speakers from
the various faiths. We can tour the mosque. And our friends create
a wonderful meal.... all free. Some of us plan to attend. If you want
to carpool, we are happy to have you join us!

Is Helping Hands on Summer Vacation??? Helping Hands Ministry is not on summer vacation! Helping Hands is
in the season of growing! Growing and reaching out to members at
Prince of Peace! Do you know of someone who could benefit from
one of our outreach areas?
Helping Hands offers six different areas of outreach:
“Fix it” – Offering help with minor repairs and assistance with odd
jobs around the house.
Prayer Shawls – Fellowship group knitting or crocheting prayer
shawls for members in special situations.
Transportation – A person needing a ride to a grocery store, doctor’s
appointment, etc.
Meals – Meals provided for Prince of Peace members in times of
special needs.
Visitation – Spiritual and personal connections on a short term or on
-going basis.
Worship Recordings – Members who desire visits to receive a
Sunday’s worship packet.
It’s That Time of Year Again! We are looking for greeters and hosts for the
upcoming school year! The Witness Ministry is
reaching out to members who would love to
greet, open doors and provide information to
persons arriving for worship services. This is a
great way to meet fellow members and
welcome the community into Prince of Peace.
Please consider volunteering to be a greeter or
a host on a team
that serves on an
every other month
rotation basis. This
i s a g r e a t
opportunity for
i n d i v i d u a l s ,
couples or families
to serve together!
Please contact
Nola Wurster, Brian
Wurster or Cindy
Romnek if you are

EQUIPPING/HELPING HANDS
Thank You! Thank you to Brigetta and Eric Wingender and Bob and
Sarah Koester for organizing our 2nd annual Family
Prince of Peace Camping weekend at Calumet County
Park. We had beautiful weather, a scrumptious potluck
and outdoor worship service led by Pastor Roger. And
there were huge amounts of marshmallows and Her-
shey bars for the evening campfire for all to go around.
Mark your calendars for next year as we are planning
our third annual event. See picture below.

Last Call for a FREE pool table! The youth room is getting a makeover this month. Our full-
size slate pool table needs a new home! It needs a little
loving care (new felt top, new pockets) but with those
improvements it will last for years and years. It’s a great
table! Talk to Gloria if you would like this pool table – yours
for free! (You are responsible for transportation.)
