Granted, many things that needed to be printed or written on paper before can be sent, stored and viewed on a mobile device—from work tasks like sending documents via email or having them signed digitally through to downloading apps you can store notes and lists in or access your travel reservation documents from.

However, there does come a time when you absolutely need to keep a printed copy of something for when your mobile has unreliable signal, your battery suddenly dies, you accidentally drop your phone and it breaks to pieces or you simply don’t trust storing your data digitally when there’s a possibility your device may be hacked and your information compromised.

What about handing your phone over in case a vendor needs to ‘verify’ something? Some people I know are not too comfortable entrusting their phone to strangers. You never know what they’d do to it or the information they’d copy from it.

Ever since the Heartbleed issue broke out I’ve printed out and kept copies of documents, receipts, even my children’s homework right before I changed all my passwords, just in case I forgot those and I need to refer to something quickly I can always take out any of my suspension files (where the documents are colour-coded or arranged according to what they’re good for or where they’re likely to be used, of course) and pull the document I need right then and there.

What about the office? In over a decade of working for several companies (some big and established names, others small enterprises) I’ve never heard of an office that has not existed without a printer, paper and pens.

Yes, even if they only print out less than 20 pages of documents a month it’s still a good investment rather than waste time running out to the print shop when you could use the time and effort to benefit the business in some other way. It seems the dream of a paperless office remains just that—a dream.

It’s a good thing that we have the convenience of label makers, suspension files and letter trays to organise our documents and ensure they don’t turn into a mountain of incomprehensible white papers and make us want to convert our study or office desk into a paper recycling centre.
