Accuracy and precision are the key to a good titration. Year 12 Chemistry students are practising their quantitative analytical chemistry to learn the skills needed to correctly identify the concentration of a solution. Titrations are widely used in the food industry. Food manufacturers often need to determine the quantity of a reactant in a sample. This technique can be used to discover the amount of salt or sugar in a product or the concentration of vitamin C or E available. This information is often provided on the label of a product.

WHAT IS IN THE SOLUTION?

Year 12 Chemistry students perform a titration.

FITNESS TESTING

Over the last 3 weeks all Years 7-10 students were involved in fitness testing. Endurance, strength, agility, speed, coordination and flexibility were tested aiming to provide students with a better understanding of their own level of fitness. All students were encouraged to perform to the best of their ability, analyse data and identify their own strengths and weaknesses. Year 9 students are to develop strategies to improve specific areas of their fitness they deem important in the everyday life. Sasha Calic Sports Coordinator

CHANCES GONE BEGGING!

This Wednesday the Futsal gods we not on our side. Our 1st and 2nd grade teams did not qualify for the grand final after losing to Epping 3-1, 2-1 respectively. The second grade team opened the match defensively, enabling the opposition to control the ball possession. This strategic approach secured a goalless first half. The second half started with Epping’s team converting their first real chance. As our imperative was to win we pushed the defensive line forward. As a result both teams started to create chances. Then Bowen Foreman converted a free kick into the equalising goal. As emotions soared high, the focus significantly dropped and within seconds Epping scored. Despite leaving their hearts of the field, our players were unable to break down the rock solid Epping defence. Our first grade team kicked off their game in similar fashion. The strategy was to minimize the opposition’s attacking space, force turn overs and create chances in counter attack. This strategy partially worked as we defended well but consequently were unable to quickly transform defence into attack. Then with a minute to go in first half Epping scored from perfectly executing the sideway kick in. The half time result promised an entertaining second half as our team started to apply more pressure towards the oppositions’ players. After Caleb Anheluk missed the golden opportunity to score, Calean Hinckson did not make a mistake from a penalty spot. Then deja vu, Epping scored directly from the restart. Then the focus of our players was ruined by consecutive poor refereeing decisions. Despite this, Caleb once again missed a great chance. Epping 3 Ashfield 1 was the final score. It swap futsal shoes for football boots aiming for more successful football season.

BAND PROGRAM 2018

It is with great excitement that we begin another year of the band program at ABHS. The program is going from strength to strength and we welcome back continuing members and new participants to the program. There are many opportunities at ABHS for students to experience the joy of music making. Learning to play a musical instrument and acquiring the unique habits of mind that come with it is one of the most incredible opportunities that our school can offer your child. We have a range of musical ensembles including a training band, a drumming ensemble, a vocal ensemble and an amazing concert band. We also have tutors for guitar, bass, trombone, trumpet, clarinet, saxophone, flute and drums. These tutors are some of Sydney’s finest professional musicians with extensive teaching experience. Both the ensembles and the tutors have vacancies and we stress that all levels and abilities are welcome and encouraged to join. At the beginning of every school year I am not only passionate about growing a new generation of musician, music lover, and future patron of the arts — I am determined to arm our children with the tools to become great thinkers, citizens, and lifelong lovers of learning. Please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] for more information.

MATHEMATICS TEXTBOOK INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

Parents have raised a number of enquiries concerning the availability of textbooks in Mathematics. With the introduction of the NSW Australian Curriculum in Years 7 -10 in recent years, the NSW texts for the Australian Curriculum have become considerably larger in size and weight. As such it was decided that the latest textbooks when purchased would remain at school. The latest textbooks can be accessed through an EDMODO group code set up by the classroom teacher or the student may bring in a USB to obtain a PDF copy of the textbook. At present, a number of classes use the old textbooks which are then supplemented with paper copies of the new material when needed. The old textbooks may be issued to students to use at home and brought to school for every maths lesson. In addition, for 2018 the Mathematics faculty decided that Mathletics would be the online learning platform for every student in Years 7-12 to access. Mathletics can be tailored to meet the learning needs of individuals. It may also be used by staff for the setting of homework and it is also a useful tool for students to use as revision in preparation for tests, and as a way to catch up on missed work. Mathletics and EDMODO are web based programs which require access to a computer and the internet. However, if access to technology is an issue then alternate arrangements can be made. Please contact: Head Teacher Mathematics - Ms Thomas.
