EMAIL FROM PRINCIPAL ABOUT U15S RUGBY TEAM I email this morning to pass on my admiration for the Ashfield Boys' HS U/15 Rugby squad and coach. Last week, during a semi-final, the Ashfield Boys' team allowed one of our students to score a try. The student in question is severely Autistic. He is part of our U/15 Rugby squad but has never taken the field. He changes into his Rugby uniform each week and is part of the warm up etc but has never played a minute of Rugby. Before the semi-final last week, our coach approached yours and your team and explained the situation. The referee was also consulted. In the last minute of the game, with Ashfield leading comprehensively, our student took the field and kicked off. An Ashfield player deliberately passed the ball back and our player had the joy of running half the field and 'scoring a try'. The Ashfield players 'attempted' to tackle our player but could not. Our player then kicked the goal as well. The sportsmanship displayed by the Ashfield players and coach was extraordinary and I cannot

praise them enough. The joy for our student, his coach and our players was phenomenal. The student in question has not stopped telling students and staff about 'his try' all week! I actually mentioned this moment at the North/West Presentation yesterday afternoon and it was met with thunderous applause from Principals, sports coordinators and life members.

Sport is about many things, as we all know. Ashfield players displayed the true meaning of 'sportsmanship' with this simple act that had a huge impact. Please pass on my best wishes to the U/15 squad, their coach and your school community.

COOTIE CATCHER

Students of 7 Da Vinci learned the different properties of quadrilaterals using a Cootie Catcher. Cootie Catcher or Chatterbox is a form of origami used in games. Parts of the chatterbox are labelled with names that serve as options for a player to choose from, and on the inside are eight flaps, each concealing a message.

LAW DAY OUT

Parramatta Supreme, District and Local Courts visit 25th July, 2019

On Thursday 25th July, the Year 11 Legal Studies class attended the Law Day Out with the Rule of Law Institute. We were extremely fortunate to be invited to observe a wide range of court matters in the Supreme Court, the District Court and the Local Court. The Honourable Justice Geoffrey Bellew kindly took time out of the recess in a trial he was presiding over to speak to the students. HH Bellew is an extremely experienced Supreme Court Judge and we were very fortunate to be able to meet with him. He was

impressed with the high standard of student questions and the quality of research undertaken by the class, specifically Jordan Dbiya. We were also able to speak with an experienced parole officer and former corrections officer who provided great insight into these post sentencing areas. Throughout the day the class were commended on their mature and respectful attitude.

YEAR 11 IN CHARGE!

Year 11 Physics students explored the intricacy of electrostatic charging of insulators. By rubbing specific cloth onto an perspex rod, a relatively positive or negative rod can be charged. Students manipulated the two charged rods to attract or repel. Did you know, a stream of water can be deflected with a charged rod due to water itself being unevenly charged.

Year 10 music student Luca Coren is involved in a musical project that has just had their music featured in Triple J’s Unearthed High Competition. Luca writes music with a fellow student from the Inner West and the name of the group is One Mile. Their song ‘Complete’ was played on Triple J and it is a fantastic piece with great lyrics, melodies and a very soulful quality to it. You can listen to it here: https://www.triplejunearthed.com/ Congratulations Luca!

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!

Wednesday 31st July was a day to remember as our football U13’s A and C, rugby U15’s and table tennis U15’s teams won the zone titles. Football U13’s A game summary The start and the end of the game was almost identical – our lethal attack scoring two memorable goals. The first player on a scoring list was Magnus who scored within the first 90 seconds of the game. Tanakorn dribbled two defensive players and unselfishly served the ball on a plate to Magnus who produced a cool finish. In the last minute of the game, a corner was awarded to our team. Elyas took the ball, placed it on the white corner line and decided to shoot directly for the goal. Remarkably, he curled the ball so well, finding the back of the net without touching any players. In between those two memorable moments, Imran impressed with an incredible long distance (35m) bomb, giving the opposition keeper no chance to save. Tanakorn was next to score after a brilliant individual play. The next goal was a classic goal as Toby, Jacob, Tanakorn and Magnus exchanged multiple passes before Magnus concluded an impressive first-half performance. Lack of composure in defence enabled Epping’s team to create a mini come back before our boys concluded the game in style. Jacob penetrated on the right hand side, timely cutting his run inside the penalty box. A penalty was awarded as an Epping defender took him out from behind. Jacob took the penalty kick and made no mistakes. The end of the game was just the beginning of Ashfield’s football dominance in years to come. Well done boys, incredible team effort, fantastic result! Brief description of our magnificent players: Alec- cool as ice, mistake free, king of defence Jacob – 100% effort, unmatchable energy, inspiration to be around Elyas – A complete player (full package), can play anywhere, anytime, fearless Jorge – plays football like dancing zorba in open space Jee Jun and Jee Cheung – uncompromised two identities on the first line of defence Magnus – willingly and unwillingly terrorise the opposition defence on the left edge Tanakorn – speed, elegance, skill, pass and composed finish; doesn’t talk much but gets the job done! Alexander - makes a 7.32m x2.44m goal frame look so small Jon – left, right, in and out – everything was possible Patrick– natural defender, though all-rounder when needed Aaron – lost ball doesn’t exist; a million dollar smile Imran – sheer power on the top of sublime skill, to score a goal looks like a simple drill Toby – one game, one win, one dream come true!

ASHFIELD TURNED THE TABLES

Balls and paddles were flying fast and furious yesterday as the Table Tennis Championships came to a close at Thornleigh Brickpit Stadium. The Ashfield Boys High School Junior Table Tennis team defeated North Sydney Boys with a 4-2 record to clinch the championship trophy. Congratulations to Daniel Ryu, Aveny Tong, Seoro Kim, Jun Kwon and Andrew Matthews for a job well done. ABHS 13Bs came out mentally and physically prepared against Asquith 13As on Wednesday at TG Milner. The first half saw Thomas Kaniaros break through Asquith’s strong defence to score Ashfield’s first of two tries for the game. The second half saw Ashfield increase their intensity and make some strong tackles against Asquith. Sammi Chalak was bringing down players who were twice his size. Ottie Alessi and Tino Fusi also made some impressive tackles. Thomas broke Asquith’s defence a number of times, and scored again. It was great to see parents and family members come and watch the boys play. Final score 15-10 Mr M Pearce

UNDER 15S RUGBY CHAMPIONS!!!

A big congratulations to the Under 15s Rugby Team for taking out the Zone Title, beating Homebush 27 – 5 in a hard-fought final. After going into half-time with the scores locked at nil-nil, Ashfield regrouped, focussed on the small things they needed to improve and took control of the game in the 2nd half. The boys are to be commended on their commitment through the season and their sportsmanship in the final; especially when they voluntarily dropped a player to match numbers with Homebush after they lost a player to injury. Rugby is a sport that prides itself on inclusivity and respect. The Ashfield boys played to these values through the season, and are worthy champions. We look forward to seeing them run out for the Open Team in 2020!

On Wednesday the 31st July, the under 13s football team led by captain Timothy Olawale were crowned champions of their division after claiming a comprehensive 6-0 win over Asquith Boys at Christie park. The dominant Ashfield side scored three goals on either side of halftime courtesy of Peter Dawson, Khiri Naing, Max Bu, Anas Rana, Michael Galimi and Tim Olawale to put the finishing touches on a flawless season and claim the grand final winners' trophy to go with the Minor Premiership (1st place on the ladder at the end of regular season). The team has gone from strength to strength this season and fully deserved to lift the silverware after a hard fought season in which they won every game they played in. It has been a pleasure to coach this team with each player showing considerable improvements in the sport while also contributing to the outstanding team chemistry. Each player also showed great sportsmanship, commitment, spirit and teamwork throughout the year and were great representatives for the school.
