Introduction & definition

A removable dental prosthesis that replaces the entire

dentition and associated structures of the maxilla / or

mandible and that can be removed by patients own will is

termed as removable complete denture.

Retention of complete denture

Is the quality inherent in a denture that resists

the forces of gravity, the adhesiveness of foods,

and the forces associated with opening of the

mouth.

1) Physical: these includes;

i. Adhesion

ii. Cohesion

iii. Atmospheric pressure

iv. Gravity

i. Adhesion: the forces of

attraction existing between

dissimilar bodies in close

contact. (attraction between

ii. Cohesion : the forces of

attraction existing between

similar bodies in close contact.

(surface tension of saliva)

iii. Atmospheric pressure: It is the

physical factor of hydrostatic

pressure due to the weight of

the atmosphere on the earth’s

iv. Gravity : working against upper denture and for

the lower denture.

2) Anatomical factors: these includes;

i. Shape of edentulous area

ii. Undercuts

iii. Anatomy of border tissues.

3) Physiological factors: these

includes;

i. Neuromuscular control.

ii. Viscosity and volume of

saliva.

4) Mechanical factors: these includes;

i. Balanced occlusion.

ii. Contour of the polished surface.

iii. Position of the occlusal plane.

iv. Position of teeth in respect to ridge.

i. Balanced occlusion : the bilateral simultaneous,

anterior and posterior occlusal contact in centric

and eccentric position.

ii. Contour of polished surface: teeth and the

polished surface should be contoured and

harmonious with oral structure.

iii. Position of occlusal plane: occlusal plane of lower

denture must be in correct level i.e corner of

mouth provide the anterior landmark.

Denture stability

4) Denture stability : is the quality of denture to be

firm, steady and constant in position when

forces are applied to it. (especially to resistance

against horizontal or rotatory movements)
