With all the short weeks and the term packed with big school events it has been very hectic for staff and students alike. The efforts of the staff in the organisation of the swimming carnival, sports day and open day have been outstanding. As discussed in a previous newsletter the swimming carnival was a resounding success, with the highest attendance rate for many years. Sports day was equally well attended, in fact attendance and participation rates were so high that it caused the day to run a little late and we had to dismiss students, so that they could catch their buses, before we were able to announce to students that Lowitja had narrowly won the day. As is usually the case the team with the most competitors participating in events won the day. The atmosphere was one of light hearted, spirited competition and the day progressed without a hitch showing how highly organised this large, logistical endeavour was. All the staff involved, in particular the PE staff led by James Treagus (Sports & Major Events Manager), must be commended for their commitment to the day with very early starts and late finishes ensuring that the students could enjoy an exciting and fun filled day. An extremely important event on our calendar is Open Day which was held last Thursday. The day reinforced to us that Henley High School still has an outstanding reputation amongst our community and will continue to be a school in demand. This was shown by the fact that there were in excess of 800 people that came through the school, throughout the day, with large tour groups being greeted by staff and students as they explored the school. The number of positive comments that I received from families as they were finishing their tour was a well-deserved reward for the primary organisers in the Promotions Team (Donna Richards- Stone and Adam Spencer), who put in a herculean effort, and the curriculum teams who set up interactive displays for the parents and prospective students to engage with. We also acknowledge the work of our Student Executive and Prefects during Open day for taking many tours throughout the day. They are such outstanding young people who are proud to represent our school community and I believe they are the best advertisement for Henley that we could possibly ask for. Much of the feedback I received on the night from parents and families included comments on how excited and passionate our teachers were and that the whole event was extremely well organised. (ie “we’ve been to quite a few schools and this was the most professionally run event we have been to …”) On top of all these events the core business of teaching and learning continues unabated. The teaching staff have begun writing the term one reports providing a snapshot of our students achievements partway through the semester. learnt how to use assignment manager so that all parents can now log into the Parent Portal and see their child’s assessments and achievements in ‘real time’ along with attendance and term reports. (Information about how to log in to the Parent Portal will be provided in an email explaining how to access student reports at the end of term). begun to use OneNote for the classroom which will enable a much higher degree of collaboration between students and between the teacher and student. It also enables the teacher to provide much better feedback to students about their work, more quickly. The implementation of Office 365 with its cloud based technologies are presenting new opportunities to further enhance the teaching and learning that occurs at Henley High School. begun reviewing and transforming learning and assessment tasks so that students are better able to achieve into the higher grade bands and also so that other students are appropriately supported to be successful. It has been a very busy start to the year for all and I expect that staff and students alike will be looking forward to the Term 1 break so they can recharge their batteries and get ready to do it all over again in Term 2. Term 2 starts with the Caica Cup in Week 1, student, parent, teacher interviews in week 2 and the Year 12 Formal in week 3. As a final note, it was heartening to receive an email from an Old Scholar during the week in response to the last newsletter article about Bullying and Violence. She recounted how the staff at Henley supported her to remain at school and be successful following some serious bullying. I believe that we, as a school, work very hard to provide this support for all our students in good and difficult times and as an old scholar myself I can attest how the support I received at Henley allowed me to pursue my dreams of a university education (a first for my family) and embark on a successful career highlighted by being able to lead our great school. We are currently exploring opportunities for Old Scholars to reconnect with the school and see it in operation or just wander the facilities to rekindle memories of past school life and friendships. PRINCIPAL’S REPORTDear Parents and Caregivers,

Over the past 10 weeks I have been humbled by enormous amount of work done by the staff and students of Henley High School.

On top of all these events the core business of teaching and learning continues unabated. The teaching staff have

• begun writing the term one reports providing a snapshot of our students achievements partway through the semester.

TRANSITION INFORMATION EVENING 2016On Tuesday 8th March, the Henley High School Supported Learning Centre held their annual Transition Information Evening. Hosting support services, the evening was an opportunity for parents and students to investigate post school options for the students. Representatives from 14 agencies, both government and private enterprise, presented information about finance, the NDIS, Day Options, Australian Disability Employment and Open Employment services. As well as families from Henley High School, many attended from the Seaton High School Special Class. The SLC has been organising the Transition Information Evening for many years, and with the positive feedback received from parents and students, and the large turn out, we look forward to continuing this important event each year. Thank you to all who helped make this a successful evening.

There are many activities and events held throughout the year for students to compete against their opposing Sub Schools (Houses) and receive points on a 5,4,3,2,1 scale. There will also be points distributed for Academic Awards and Sub School GPAs at the end of each term. It is early days, with many more events to come, so who will take home the shield in 2016? Wednesday 9th March saw our best 38 swimmers make their way back to the State Aquatic Centre for the A Grade Interschool Swimming meet. As the only public school in A Grade, Henley is up against some of the State’s strongest swimming schools, many having their own pool facilities. The girls finished in 7th position, showing talent and determination. The boys were equally as successful finishing in 7th position. With result combined, Henley came in 5th position overall which is a very strong result.

George Parousis was able to achieve a first place in the Open Boys Freestyle, and the team were also able to record 9 second places and 8 third places. Along with the first place, the highlight would have to be the Open Girls Freestyle Relay team of Jade De Beer, Aiesha Kong, Enayah Kong and Siobhan MacLaren who achieved a standard on the night in their 4x50m freestyle relay.

Competing against these schools, placing fifth and being the only Public School in the competition is a huge achievement in itself. Congratulations to all of our champion swimmers who did the most amazing job. Thank you also to the staff who made it run smoothly and parents for supporting the team. A special thanks to the number of parents who volunteered for time-keeping. A successful night like this could not happen without the extra support.

MALAYSIA - MARCH 2016Our school has recently had another successful overseas trip, this time to Malaysia. A group of 8 SSP students accompanied by Ms Sammy Nutt, Assistant Principal SPESS, & myself travelled to Malaysia as part of the Specialist Sport Program inaugural exchange with Asia Pacific Smart School in Subang, about 25km west of Kuala Lumpur. Students from APSS visited Henley High School in September 2015, so it was our turn to visit them, with our students staying with homestay families. Upon arrival at APSS, after our flight, we were greeted by staff, students & parents before a brief welcome ceremony. Our students were then chauffeured to all parts of Malaysia, over the weekend, as they became accustomed to the Malaysian way of life, and got the opportunity to try lots of wonderful food.

On Monday & Tuesday it was back to school for our students, Malaysian style, which included a presentation at assembly in front of the whole school and a quick group selfie on the stage. The next morning we all met at school packed and ready for a 2 day camp at the Radiant Retreats at Janda Baik, Pahang, for exploring the rainforest and team-building activities. The scenery was amazing along our rainforest trek where the students had the opportunity to cool off at the bottom of a small waterfall before working our way back down towards our camp site. The next day consisted of a 2 hour river walk before heading back to the school and to our host families. We went sightseeing through Kuala Lumpur on a final full day of our trip, going to the Batu Caves, Central Markets, Chinatown and past the twin towers. Prior to meeting at the airport on the Saturday night, the students got to spend the day with their host families before a very long goodbye at the airport. The students didn’t want to leave!

The students on the trip were sensational and they are to be congratulated on how well they represented Henley High School and themselves. Due to the success of this trip, Henley High School and APSS will continue with this exchange so there will be opportunities for students to be part of this exchange in the near future.

PRIMARY SCHOOL VISITS – WEEKS 6 AND 7In the two weeks leading up to Henley High’s Open Day, the Middle School team and several Year 9 students visited local primary schools to promote Henley High School. The students spoke about Middle School structure, Middle School events and the Specialist Sports Program (SSP) which also informed the primary school students about the SSP application process and its closure date. The Year 9 students were visiting the schools they had attended as Year 7s themselves and were excited to see the familiar environment, students and teachers once again. The Primary Schools and the Year 9s who visited them are listed below. These Year 9s will be issued with Citizenship certificates for their role during the visits.

Last week a group of our year 10 and 11 students participated in Round One of the Law Society’s Mock Trial Competition. The competition has been organised by the Law Society since 1988 and simulates a court case in which the participating student teams contest a fictional legal matter in a Mock Court. The Law Society provides the cases ten days before the trial to simulate the real world experience of barristers and solicitors. In each round, one side acts for the plaintiff or prosecution and the other for the defence. The cases are designed to reflect matters which may confront students in their daily lives. Students are provided with a volunteer barrister to coach them in the principles and procedures of each matter while members of the legal profession act as judges or magistrates for each round.

This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain experience in a career of interest whilst also strengthening their confidence, their public speaking skills, and their ability to problem solve. Students have had to learn how to be flexible, work effectively as a team, be persuasive, and structure a convincing argument. All students have been ecstatic to not only have the opportunity to engage with the opposing teams but to also have the chance to collaborate with professionals and seek feedback on their progress.

Round one saw our Henley High School students compete against a team of Year 12 Legal Studies students from Woodville High School. Although our team could not prove their case and it was subsequently dismissed, due to their knowledge of the law and their case, in addition to the delivery from all students, our team won the round by a staggering 4 points! The students were extremely pleased with themselves considering the opposing team’s legal studies knowledge advantage.

Our next round will be held on the 17th May in the District Court in the Sir Samuel Way Building, Victoria Square where the students will experience a real courtroom atmosphere with a presiding judge who will be robed for the students’ engagement. We wish the team much luck and success in the second round.

HENLEY HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 1 | WEEK 9

JACK LUKOSIUS -UNDER 15 AFL, SOUTH AFRICADuring the January school holidays, I travelled to South Africa with the School Sport Australia U15 AFL Team. We were there for 14 days to play games against an U25 South African representative side as well as conduct Footy clinics for young kids and also for a cultural and educational experience

We all met in Perth for a two day camp beforehand where we were hosted by Fremantle and West Coast Eagles. We were also put through fitness testing prior to heading to Johannesburg

In Johannesburg we played 3 games against the South African Lions side, we won all of them quite easily but they were some of the most physical games I have played. It was a great experience playing and training alongside some of the best players my age from around Australia.

Conducting the Footy Clinics was one of the highlights of the Tour for me, the kids were so happy and enjoyed learning AFL so much. I also enjoyed camping at a Safari Park for two nights, and visiting Sun City, one of the largest resorts in the world and hosts world class events.

During the second week we toured Cape Town, where we visited a Juvenile Prison, went to Robben Island, visited Table Mountain, and saw some of the most amazing views in the world.

It was an incredible trip and one I will remember forever.

WEST ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB VISITOn Thursday 17th March, the Specialist Sports Football Program visited the West Adelaide Football Club to meet their highly experienced and knowledgeable strength and conditioning manager, Sean Baker. Sean runs his own business (PEAQ Conditioning Coaching Pty Ltd) and works for the Darren Lehmann Cricket Academy, he has previously worked with the Woodville West Torrens Football Club and Adelaide Football Club.

Sean gave the students a tour of the WAFC who won the SANFL Premiership in 2015 under coach Mark Micken. Sean provided valuable insights into the importance of core strength and showed examples so that our athletes could work on their strength during their own time. The second part of the session was out on the oval. Sean ran a warm up involving dynamic stretches and then conducted a speed conditioning session. Our athletes enjoyed the experience and Sean is going to be involved in our program regularly throughout the year.

By Siwen (Stacey) Wang

Y11 International student

In week 3 of Term 1, we of the year 11 EAL Class (English As An Additional Language) were giv-en an opportunity to visit the Royal Institution of Aus-tralia (RiAus), which is a national sci-ence organisation, that has been promoting public awareness and understanding of sci-ence (RiAus.org).

It was an exciting experience to dis-cover the won-ders of science at RiAus. Especially for us, who are not natural Eng-lish speakers, we found that in the fields of art and science, even people, from dif-ferent cultural backgrounds could have a common un-derstanding.

An amazing trip to RiAus

Collision——Art meets science We were fortunate to

have a guide, Lisa, who informed us about what the purpose of the exhibition was. She ex-plained to us about the artwork in relation to the science.

The artworks that most impressed me were the “Searching for signal” series by Saeed Salim-pour.

They conveyed the message of the dark matter in the universe most clearly and di-

rectly.

It is Saeed’s goal to make science easy and fun for everyone to un-derstand.

Additionally, the work of Franz Antony (winning entry) called Supersymmetry, is a fascinating piece of work that evokes in us a feeling of endlessness and when you consider, science itself is endless. The symmetry of the pattern reveals the equality of the subject

matter as pictured as being, mathematically precise.

Event is still on until 15th 0f March at Future Space Gallery (The Science Exchange Adelaide SA). Come and explore the beauty of science!

“It is a really decent thing to admire different insights to Collision from all types of people. Particularly people do not major in either art or science, like students.”——Lisa (Staff of RiAus)
