Coming from the northern hemisphere where the temperature hovered in the mid-thirties on most days and back to bitterly cold days here, was a little bit of a shock to the system. However, the welcome back to school has been a warm one with some terrific greetings, news and very special letters and drawings from some of our students. One of the things that struck me last week was the number of students and staff who have succumbed to the winter bugs and infections that appear particularly virulent at the moment. It does concern me that on many occasions we have students who attend school who are clearly unwell. Given the close contact that students and teachers have as part of their day to day activity, and the fact that infections spread so easily in an environment like ours, it is imperative that stu- dents who are not well remain at home. The best place for a sick child is at home. We are currently in the midst of the official transition placement phase for Year Six students moving to secondary schools in 2015. We have received enquiries from parents seeking information about their child’s secondary placement. We have strict Department of Education and Early Childhood Development guidelines that we must adhere to as part of this process. These guidelines state, ‘this process is confidential and it is essential that no student or parent should be notified of their Year Seven placement before 20 th August’. Despite what you may hear from friends about what other schools are doing, we will be following this directive so that this process can be finalised as fairly and judiciously as possible. We are keeping our fingers crossed that the weather will be kind to us on Thursday. All students from Years 3 – 6 will participate in our School Athletics Carnival to be held at Rieschiecks Reserve in Doncaster. Many thanks to those parents who have indicated that they will be able to assist on the day. Thanks also to Liam Santamaria for his organisation and staff for their support for this event. Always a highlight on the calendar at this time of the year is Footy Fun day. As the AFL season draws to a close and finals begin, it is timely for us all to show our support for our football teams – such a huge part of our sporting culture in Melbourne. Of course we also welcome footy colours from clubs outside the AFL and other codes. Congratulations to those students who were acknowledged for their performance in International Competitions and Assessments for Schools – Science Competition at assembly on Monday. Sincere thanks to members of the Victory Church, who use some of our facilities during the weekend, for donating a new Microwave oven for use in the hall kitchen. I would like to acknowledge and thank Kim Bride for so capably managing the school as acting Principal during my absence. A reminder to all parents and students that next Monday 18 th August is one of our designated student free, Curric- ulum Days. All staff will be involved in Professional Learning activities on Monday. Students are not required to attend school on this day.

School Banking

School Banking - every FRIDAY except the last day of term.

SCHOOL BANKING TROPHY: Congratulations to 5N who won the School Banking Trophy for the first time last Friday! Special mention must go to 3W who came in a close second. Who will win this week?

REWARDS: In Term 3 there are now two more exciting rewards to choose from a swimming bag and money box. The whale shark pencil case, Penguin Keyring, shark keyring, handball and scented pencils are also still available. If you have 10 silver tokens or one gold token it’s time to order your reward. Just fill in your banking reward slips or place a note in your banking wallet with the reward item you would like, your name and student number. Rewards usually take one or two weeks to receive. You can also order the tenth time you bank.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED: Visit any Commonwealth Bank with your birth certificate and open up a Youthsaver account on the spot. It’s that easy.

Remember, School Banking is also a fundraiser for our school. Each new account raises $5 for our school and every amount banked on a Friday raises 5% commission. Our School Bankers helped raise $1,296 for the first half of the year so please get involved! Thanks for your support.
