PRINCIPAL'S REPORTIt’s been a strong start to the 2021 school year. We’ve had a focus on curriculum immersion, with students participating in a wide variety of quality learning experiences and opportunities.

The Health and Sports Science Camp took place recently, which involved visiting UniSA Health and Sport Science programs in Adelaide, talking to experts in the field and participating in athletic testing and measurement processes. There are further activities planned for the program, including working with professionals in Physiotherapy, Podiatry and Exercise Physiology.

Students from the ACEE Program have been involved in site visits to the Whyalla Secondary College building site regularly throughout the term. This is an opportunity for them to see their Trade areas in action, experience what working with a large construction project is like and a great opportunity to connect with the new school. The Eyre Café is open and functioning, with our CHAT students gaining industry-standard experience, while our student-led Crèche is in operation for our AHEAD program. IMAT students have been undertaking programming and looking at a Game Design topic. In all, Specialist Programs continue to grow in size and engage students with their future pathway of choice.

Our 2021 Timetable is proving beneficial for students, with a daily Academic Intervention time and weekly Curriculum Enrichment time. This has seen a number of student-led initiatives, including House Meetings, Year Level Assemblies, Whole School Assemblies as well as a Cyber Safety Education Program run in collaboration with SAPOL.

Student and Staff House Leaders were recently announced in a Whole School Assembly. Well done to all those who nominated and also to those who have been elected. Students attended the GRIP Leadership Conference on Friday 19 March.

Our School Improvement Plans are well underway, with a focus in lifting A and B grade achievement and Literacy skills. This has included intensive support for students during our daily Intervention Group time and traffic lights completed every three weeks.

Thank you to our Governing Council elected members for 2021 including Parent/Caregiver, Community, Student and Staff Representatives. This team is undertaking vital work to ensure our year continues to run smoothly and provide quality opportunities for our young people.

GRIP LEADERSHIP CONFERENCEOn Friday 19 March, our student leaders attended a GRIP Leadership Conference for secondary students. We were joined by students from other schools from Whyalla and around the Eyre Peninsula and Mid North. The sessions throughout the day focused on: improving ourselves as leaders, increasing the effectiveness of existing events at our school, innovating our approach to leadership to fix things that need our attention, and inventing a new aspect to mark our leadership in 2021.

Our students participated enthusiastically in all sessions and have returned to school highly motivated and excited about their plans for the student leadership team to achieve their goals in 2021.

Thanks to GRIP Leadership for providing this opportunity to the Edward John Eyre High School student leaders.

SCHOOL EVENTS

TRAFFIC LIGHTSEvery three weeks teachers complete traffic lights for their subjects to indicate how students are progressing and whether any concerns exist. This is to provide students with regular and consistent feedback on their progress in every subject, and give them the opportunity to address concerns in a timely manner.

Teachers allocate a green, amber or red traffic light against four criteria:- Learning Capacity - submission of formative tasks- Learning Achievement - submission of summative tasks- Learning Commitment - student effort towards achieving success in the subject - Engagement - attendance percentage in the subject

There is also a comment identifying what task students are currently working on, the due date and any outstanding tasks the student still needs to submit.

Students have provided positive feedback about the usefulness of the traffic light data in improving their time management skills, and prioritising subjects with the greatest need based on their traffic light results.

Round 2 of traffic light results was released on Daymap in Week 8. The next round will be available to students in Week 11.

BULLYING NO WAY DAY

Friday 19 March was the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. The Wellbeing Team and Food and the Community and ACEE classes all collaborated to organise a lunchtime celebration. The activities at lunch gave students the opportunity to write a message of support and take a light refreshment as a celebration.

Edward John Eyre High School is a bully free zone and we are always striving to celebrate and promote this message every day.

SCHOOL EVENTSCLONTARF UPDATE

Clontarf is very excited to get back under way, continuing to build strong relationships with the Boys, School and Community. We have a lot of fun, exciting and enriching activities/events planned for this year, which we hope will help make attending school attractive to the boys, whilst providing positive, fun and sometimes brand-new experiences.

So far this year the boys have participated in afternoon activities such as golf, fishing and basketball matches. We have also had Academy visits from Kmart, the Aboriginal Community Education Team and Alumni Leroy Risborg. We have facilitated Primary School Clinics at Memorial Oval and Stuart Primary Schools, and also went on a site tour of the new school. The boys got to see first-hand what the new facilities will look like in 2022, including the Clontarf room, which we are all excited for!

The boys are looking forward, over the coming weeks, to the Year 12 Leadership Camp to Yorke Peninsula and Year 11 Surf Camp to Sceale Bay and I look forward to updating you on the success of those camps in the next newsletter.

We are excited for 2021 and we cannot wait for what the year has installed for our boys and the programme. A big thanks for all the support and encouragement. The Clontarf Team

VET BLOCK WEEKSDuring Week 5 of Term 1, VET students engaged in their second block week for 2021. All students had a busy week undertaking both theory and practical.

Our third block week is taking place this week (Monday 22 March to Friday 26 March).

POWER OF STEM PRESENTATIONOn Thursday 18 March, members of Port Adelaide Football Club, in collaboration with GFG, attended EJEHS to present the Power of STEM program to Year 11 students. The program aims to provide high school students with the opportunity to explore new and exciting career paths in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Braedon, Will, Alipate and Jake from Port Adelaide Football Club gave a great presentation to students which involved looking at different roles and employment opportunities within a football club. This included not just the players and coaches, but other roles like the medical staff and media and marketing teams. Afterwards they took the students outside to the basketball courts and oval for various activities.
