The Raffles Model United Nations Conference (RMUNC) held from 3 -5 June this year, is an annual event organised by Raffles Junior College. About 200 delegates from top secondary schools were invited and PL had the pleasure of

being invited again to this three-day event. The main objective of RMUNC is to provide a greater depth of understanding of the United Nations, its methods and regulations. Delegates also learned about current affairs and issues pertinent to the world today.

PL was represented by two teams of pupils. The Syria team was led by Anisha Primalani (4A2) with Kiew Shi Hui Charity (4A1), Alison Han Yan Wen (2.1B), Ng Pei Qi (2.1B) and Deborah Lee Qin Fang (2.2B) as members. The Myanmar team was led by Cheryl Seah Sze Tien (4A2) and had Low Yi Han Athelia (4A1), Shabbna Feroz Khan (3A1), Chia Shiyu Izabella (3A1) and Priscilla Tan Jia Li (3A2) as members of the team.

This year’s Sec 1 Camp Courage – 'I Discover' was held from 18 - 19 Aug. The theme of the camp was STAR with the tagline ‘Find the STAR, Nurture the STAR, Be the STAR’. Pupils learned about the need for strength, tenacity, good attitude and respect through class-building activities. They also attended a DISC Profiling workshop which helped them discover their strengths. The Sec 3 camp leaders honed their leadership skills through the organisation of the Sec 1 camp. This camp was truly an unforgettable one for both the Sec 1 campers and Sec 3 camp leaders.

On 4 Sept, Singaporeans, tourists and some PL girls flocked to Pasir Laba Army Camp to experience the many fascinating and educational showcases of the Army Open House.

We were given the rare opportunity to try our hand at the equipment and received a better understanding of the duties the Armed Forces take on. The booths were never without a healthy stream of visitors and most walked away with faces painted in every shade of green. We stared in bright-eyed wonder as we stood close to the military armaments.

The buzz of the day's excitement soon wound down and we left with a clearer picture of our nation's defence system; a commitment all of us share and, knowing that everyone is a part of that picture makes being a Singaporean all the more worthwhile.

PL Leadership Week

This year marked our very first PL Leadership Week held from 7-10 July. During this week our pupils learned what it meant to be a leader. This year’s theme was ‘Called to Lead… Be Inspired’. We were privileged to have Ms Denise Phua (MP, Jalan Besar GRC) to launch the inaugural Leadership Week. Throughout the week, pupils learned about leadership during ‘LiVE’ lessons and morning devotions.

The highlight of the week was the PL Leadership Forum where 3 distinguished speakers shared their leadership experiences in their own field of work. The speakers were Dr Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman (Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of National Development), Ms Denise Phua and Mrs Sally Chew (President of The Girls' Brigade, Singapore). The week culminated in the Leaders’ Night during which the student leaders were treated to a dinner to thank them for their service to the school. The finale of the dinner was the lighting of candles for the student leaders. The leaders were given candles which they lit for each other, with each lit candle symbolising how they will go out to light the world.

International Pupils’ Integration Trip

I really enjoyed myself during the trip. In Chinatown, we visited many places of worship and roadside stalls. The Duck Tour along Marina Bay and Singapore River was also very exciting. Throughout the whole trip, I learnt more about my international friends and even more about Singapore. Thank you PL for arranging the trip.

Rachel Loh 1-3A

The trip was extremely fun. We went to Chinatown and visited different places of worship which helped me to be more aware of Singapore’s many religions. The Duck Tour was amazing because it was both a bus and a boat! I really enjoyed the cruise along the Singapore River.

This trip helped me become more aware of Singapore’s culture and I felt that Singapore will be great as my second home. Though I am not a Singaporean, I feel so proud of Singapore. Thank you PL for this opportunity.

As part of National Education, the Science Department organised a learning journey for 360 Sec 3 pupils to the Marina Barrage between 21 and 28 Oct. The learning journey aimed to impart information and knowledge about the new downtown freshwater Marina Reservoir. The visit was extremely beneficial as it taught the pupils the importance of water and gave them a deeper insight into how every citizen can do his part to help to save water for Singapore.

Learning Journey to Marina Barrage

This year, PL participated as a pilot school in a new grant scheme for youth engagement in initiated service-learning projects called Campus ChangeMakers (CCM) under the National Youth Council. This new grant scheme aims to encourage pupils to submit projects that could range from raising awareness of the environment to improving pupil welfare.

In preparation for the introduction of this programme to a larger group of pupils next year, the PL CCM Panellists for 2010, which comprised student leaders, attended a 3-day 2-night camp from 23 - 25 Oct at Sarimbun Scout Camp, along with pupils from four other schools. Here we learnt about grant assessments, where we were taught how to decide on how much grant can be awarded for a cause-worthy project proposed by our fellow-schoolmates. We also

networked with pupils from other schools and played many games, which taught us much about teamwork and leadership. The camp was really enjoyable and educational. We even had a campfire and BBQ session! Through the camp, we were made aware of the importance of active citizenship and how to carry out our roles as CCM Panellists when the new year begins. We are very excited about service-learning and are ready to embark on this journey in 2010.

sCHool EVENTs

This year’s theme - ‘Who’s your neighbour?’ – encouraged pupils to think about how knowing their neighbours deepens the bond amongst fellow Singaporeans, regardless of race or religion. As part of PL’s culture of having a ‘dress up’ year biennially, pupils were encouraged to put on an ethnic costume of another ethnic group. The celebration saw a lot of colours, laughter and entertainment. At the same time, the day served as a reminder that Singapore is a multi-racial society and that there is a need for each and every one to ensure that racial harmony and peace are maintained.

Racial Harmony Day Inaugural Homecoming The very first PL Homecoming was held on 1 Aug. The event was held to create an opportunity for all alumni PL-Lites and former staff to meet up with each other again. It was a moment to get together and share precious memories as well as their lives. Alumni PL-Lites were informed through email and Facebook.

On that day, there was a powerpoint presentation tracing PL’s history. The audience reminisced fond memories. Mrs Winnie Tan, our former Principal, shared some poignant memories of her time as Principal of PL. Mrs C Poulier, an ex-teacher, shared special moments she had as a teacher in PL. After the sharing sessions, a tour was held to showcase PL’s premises. Many took photos to capture PL’s first Homecoming.

National Day

PL celebrated Singapore’s 44th Birthday with a full parade line-up followed by a concert. This year’s National Day theme ‘Reaching Out, Reaching Up’ served as a reminder and a celebration of our nation’s history and achievements, and it also looked forward to our future. Our Guest of Honour, Dr Tan Chor Hiang, Senior Director, Medical Services Office, Ministry of Health and Vice Chairman, PLMGS Board of Management, graced us with her presence at the parade and concert.

The parade consisted of a march past by our contingents from the primary and secondary schools. The parade served to imbue a sense of pride in PL-Lites and gave them a chance to experience a parade.

The concert saw various performances put on by our performing arts groups to celebrate Singapore’s birthday. The remarkable community singing saw how PL rose to the occasion with the singing of our national songs. Dr Tan also gave out the School Colours Awards to PL-Lites who had achieved commendable performance in their CCAs.

We were also privileged to welcome Mr Chan Tee Miang, Director of Organisation Development to PL on 16 Sept. The staff enjoyed an informal dialogue on various issues with him. It

was a fruitful time of discussion and Mr Chan himself found the dialogue a very interactive one. In his own words, he said he had “an engaging discussion with the teachers on various issues.”

On 24 Aug, Mr Gan Chin Huat, Deputy Director of Schools (East), accompanied by several MOE officials, visited PL. They observed lessons and interacted with our pupils and teachers. The visitors were also given an overview of the innovations in the teaching and learning programme in PL. Our school was affirmed and encouraged by Mr Gan who wrote in his remarks to PL, “A progressive school that caters to all. Keep up the good work!”

As part of National Education, PL pupils and teachers learned about Hari Raya Puasa and fasting during morning assembly on 18 Sept. Teachers and pupils also had a chance to enjoy a variety of delicious Hari Raya cookies, served by the Malay pupils who were decked out in their traditional costumes during recess.

Teachers’ Day CelebrationThe day started off with much anticipation with the girls and teachers looking forward to the concert. The theme, ‘In Our Hearts’, was chosen as we wanted to show our heartfelt gratitude and love for our teachers. Much work went into the planning and preparation and it was certainly tough keeping the programme a secret from our teachers!

The concert started off with the grand entrance of our special VIPs - the PL staff - led by Mrs Lee and Ms Goh. The highlight of the celebration was the game ‘Guess the Teacher’, where some teachers wore their old school uniforms and kept their faces hidden from view. Pupils then had to guess their identities. It was a fun and light-hearted game, which both pupils and staff enjoyed very much. As a finale, class monitors presented gifts to their teachers. It was a fun-filled day indeed!

16 Sept was a memorable and significant day for the PL prefects. The Sec 4 prefects of 2009 stepped down and handed the Board over to the Sec 4 prefects of 2010. The Executive Committee of 2010 was also introduced to the school. The seniors passed symbolic items to the newly appointed EXCO members to mark a new journey ahead of them. The newly appointed Head Prefect, Ruth Lew, gave her maiden speech to the school, sharing with everyone her vision for the school. Her predecessor, Valerie Wang, thanked the school for the support and affirmation she received while she was Head

Prefect. Truly, this is a new chapter for the PL Prefectorial Board, as the new batch of prefects continue the legacy left by the PL Prefects of 2009.

Baccalaureate ServiceThe Baccalaureate Service held on 7 Oct was the last chapel service for the graduating classes of 2009. Reverend Wilfred Leow delivered the final message to them during this service. After the message, Mrs Lee presented collar pins to the graduating classes, a tradition in PL. In return, the Head Prefect Valerie Wang and Vice-head Prefect Elizabeth Ong presented a palm tree to Mrs Lee on behalf of the 2009 cohort. It was a bitter-sweet moment as the girls viewed a slideshow with messages of e n c o u r a g e m e n t from their teachers as well as a video in which their form teachers gave their farewell messages as they continued their journey in life.

Christmas service has always been unique and special to PL. It is a time when the pupils are given the opportunity to bless a few social organisations by playing host to them to celebrate this special service.

This year, the chapel committee adopted four social organisations – Pertapis Children’s Home, Gospel Mission to the Blind, Ramakrishna Mission Boys’ Home, and St Luke’s ElderCare. Representatives and residents from some of the homes joined PL for the service. Since Christmas is a time of giving, PL blessed the organisations with some gifts so that they can have an abundant Christmas too.

Rev Wilfred Leow, shared excerpts from Luke 2:8-20, reminding us about God’s unconditional love that is extended to all. He challenged one and all to look beyond the hurts and rejections which have hardened our hearts, in order to embrace and accept the love that God wants to offer to us.

Founder’s DayOn 14 Oct, the celebration started off with the Founder’s Day service held in the morning in the Agape Concert Hall. The service began with praise and worship after which Ms Yap Foon Lyn, Vice Principal, PLMGS (Pri) gave a report on the school’s achievements. Soon after, Mrs Lee Siew Choo, Principal, PLMGS (Sec) highlighted some of our achievements during the year. This was then followed by an enlightening sermon by Rev Dr Wee Boon Hup on ‘Touching Hearts’.

This year, PL had Mrs Eunice Tay, CEO of National Kidney Foundation and an alumni PL-Lite (Class of 1965), as the Guest of Honour. PL also saw 20 teachers receiving their Long Service Awards this year. Another highlight of the service was a slideshow tracing the history of PL and also photographs of our graduating classes.

The annual Founder’s Day Dinner was held in the PL Primary school hall. The Guest of Honour, Mr Andrew Ang, Supreme Court Judge and former Chairman of our Board of Management, graced the occasion, for which the theme was ‘To Serve Him in Every Way’. The dinner guests were entertained by a handbell performance and a skit by the PLMGS girls. All had a wonderful time singing songs dear to all PL-Lites, and some discreetly wiped away their tears as they watched a nostalgic slideshow of old friends and teachers who have made PL what she is today.

On 16 Oct, a ‘Strings Concert 2’ organised by the Aesthetics Track was held in the dance studio. Pupils from the Aesthetics Track, GCE ‘O’ Level Music Course, Choir and Harp Ensemble, put on various items for this exciting concert. This year, a fringe segment was introduced and it took place before the main concert in the evening. The purpose of the fringe segment was to provide more opportunities for pupils to perform in public. It also provided the opportunity for the parents to mingle with the teachers and music tutors.

Thank you and farewell Mrs Lee!Dressed in school colours - yellow and blue, the whole of PL came together on 29 Oct to express their appreciation for Mrs Lee Siew Choo and also to bid her farewell. Prefects, CCA groups and student leaders were involved in putting together a programme to show their heartfelt gratitude to Mrs Lee.

The Guzheng and Guitar Ensemble played ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’, accompanied by the Choir. The song, dedicated to Mrs Lee, was to show Mrs Lee's commitment to PL. The Handbell and Harp Ensemble put together ‘You Raise Me Up’, which was accompanied by flautists and the Choir. ‘You Raise Me Up’ by Josh Groban, is Mrs Lee’s favourite song. It is a song which speaks about God’s strength and grace in bringing one through tough times. Our beloved Principal, Mrs Lee, sang her heart out along with the school.

The programme included a video presentation by the Sports Groups and a poem dedication specially composed and presented by the ELDDS (Drama) girls. The prefects sang the school creed as the lyrics specifically depicted the values that Mrs Lee has shown throughout her years of service in school. Last but not least, the PL staff also put on an item just for Mrs Lee.

At the end of the programme, Mrs Lee expressed her heartfelt thanks for all the hard work that PL staff and pupils had put in all these years. She continued to encourage us and told us to keep the PL flag flying high. The school will definitely miss her tremendously. The legacy that she leaves behind will now be continued by Ms Pamela Yoong who will continue to bring the school to greater heights. The whole programme ended with a special breakfast for Mrs Lee, organised by the PSSG.

Welcome! New Staff

In July, Mrs Sharon Lee Boon Siew organised a reunion for her class of 1966 and their teachers at the Pines. It was ‘a fellowship of kindred minds’. Present, in the midst of them, was Nola Sim from Melbourne (Can you spot her?)

Our Alumni representative on the Board, Dr Tan Chor Hiang was Reviewing Officer and Guest of Honour at our school’s National Day Parade & Celebrations.

On 1 Aug, hoards of PL graduates, from the 50’s to the recent 2008, descended on PL Sec for the 1st Homecoming event organised by the secondary school. Singing of choruses and hymns was ably led by PL-Lites. An old boy, Mr Tay Buck Tee, an active member of Braddell Heights Community Centre Executive Committee and a staunch supporter of PLMGS during our move from Boundary Road to Lorong Ah Soo, turned up with his granddaughter, a recent PL graduate. Teachers were also present. Mrs Winnie Tan and Mrs Claudette Poulier were asked to reminisce on the decades they spent in PL. Thank God for His faithfulness to generations of PL-Lites.

On a Saturday during the Term 3 break, a few old girls joined the PL staff and parents on a day-trip to Malacca organised by the PSSG. Of special mention are sisters Beow Tuan, Beow Sek and Beow Chin.

So, Alumni members, do avail yourselves to opportunities to interact with pupils, parents & staff of our 2 schools and to “serve in every way”.
