LATROBE HIGH SCHOOL Department of Education School Fair Tomorrow Evening We hope to see many families at our Twilight School Fair tomorrow 4pm to 8pm. It will be a wonderful opportunity for our school community to have some fun and explore our newly renovated school. On Wednesday morning next week, the Minister of Education, Mr Jeremy Rockliff MP, will be officially opening our redevelopment. As a school and community we are excited to be close to finishing all the associated works. I would like to thank everyone who has played a role in improving our environment and providing wonderful facilities for our students to flourish. Student Leadership Over the last few weeks, students who have nominated for leadership have been completing their five minute speeches. It has been evident that students put a lot of thought into compiling their speeches. Living our school values, supporting the learning environment, building positive relationships, acknowledging past mistakes and continuing to strengthen our Anti-Bullying Program have been common threads throughout the speeches. Staff and students will be voting on Monday 13 November for Student Leadership and Grade 9, 2018, School Association Representatives, with the announcement of the successful candidates during an assembly on Tuesday 28 November. Before the Assembly, we have planned a light luncheon, so all candidates are aware who made it onto Student Leadership or School Association. This allows time for students to congratulate and support each other, before the announcement to the whole school. Resilience is a key school value and we are extremely proud of all the students who have shown the courage to nominate for leadership positions. Language In recent times, we have been noticing some students using foul language in conversation with their peers, especially during break times. If we are to continue to build a climate of respect and positive relationships, we cannot tolerate swearing. We ask that parents have a conversation about what is appropriate language in a school environment. In homeroom today, we outlined our expectations to students and made them aware that we would be sending letters home to parents if they were swearing at school. Students who are repeat offenders will be receiving consequences. Thank you for supporting us with having high expectations of students and making sure the culture at Latrobe High School is warm an inviting. School Fair Tomorrow Evening

We hope to see many families at our Twilight School Fair tomorrow 4pm to 8pm. It will be a

wonderful opportunity for our school community to have some fun and explore our newly renovated

school. On Wednesday morning next week, the Minister of Education, Mr Jeremy Rockliff MP, will be

Student Leadership

Over the last few weeks, students who have nominated for leadership have been completing their five

minute speeches. It has been evident that students put a lot of thought into compiling their speeches.

Living our school values, supporting the learning environment, building positive relationships, acknowledging past mistakes and continuing to strengthen our Anti-Bullying Program have been

common threads throughout the speeches. Staff and students will be voting on Monday 13 November

for Student Leadership and Grade 9, 2018, School Association Representatives, with the announcement

of the successful candidates during an assembly on Tuesday 28 November. Before the Assembly, we

have planned a light luncheon, so all candidates are aware who made it onto Student Leadership or

School Association. This allows time for students to congratulate and support each other, before the

announcement to the whole school. Resilience is a key school value and we are extremely proud of all

the students who have shown the courage to nominate for leadership positions.

Language

In recent times, we have been noticing some students using foul language in conversation with their

peers, especially during break times. If we are to continue to build a climate of respect and positive

relationships, we cannot tolerate swearing. We ask that parents have a conversation about what is

appropriate language in a school environment. In homeroom today, we outlined our expectations to

GRADE 7 REPORT In what has already been a very busy start to the term, we are about to get even busier! Students are

reminded to continue to adhere to the school values, come to class organised and ensure they are

getting everything out of themselves to set themselves up well for next year.

The students who went to the Resilience Roadshow had a fantastic time learning about the services

available to them, playing with the zorb balls and ensuring they worked well with many different schools.

The event was a whole day event and we travelled with the Grade 8’s. Many students won prizes on the

day and were able to see what Don College has to offer.

Well done to the 39 Grade 7’s who went to the school Social last Thursday night and dressed up. It’s

fantastic to see so much creativity and everyone having a fun and enjoyable night.

A reminder that we have our school Fair, this Friday 10 November and less than two weeks later,

another whole school event, the school athletics carnival. The carnival is over two days on November 21

and 22 and is held at the Latrobe Recreation Ground. Students will learn the skills required during their

PE lessons.

The students continue to learn in their last rotation on the Personal Interest taster line. Students have

now had the opportunity to see what Art, MDT, Drama, Music and Cooking has to offer which will hopefully assist their PI selections for 2018.

POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS

It was fantastic to see Charli, Lily, Aaliah and Hannah enjoying themselves at the

school social. All students who attended were well behaved and enjoyed

dancing for 3 hours! The photo area was also a major highlight of the evening

with everyone willing to pose for a happy snap!

RESILIENCE Students were heavily engaged during the Resilience Roadshow at Don

College and were able to gain valuable information. The Grade 7 and

Grade 8 students from many North West Schools were involved and

the Don College students did a fantastic job! Zorb balls were a major

highlight for our students!

LEARNING

Congratulations to Ruby Gardner, Chris Johnstone, Brodie

Speers, Jake Grubb, Kelly McClymont, Quinten Brumm,

Zander Hudson, Mable Freestone Spindle-Tree and Cara

Clarke for their fantastic work in art. They were

acknowledged at the whole school assembly for their effort!

Pictured here is Ruby’s (left) and Quinten’s (right) work,

great to see so many gifted students in Grade 7!

RESPECT

Respect to Toby for stepping up and running in the Under 17 School Knockout

Championships in Launceston on October 28! Toby ran a very fast 800m in 2.44 to

place 6th and score valuable points for our school. The boy’s team qualified for the

National Championships but are unable to attend. A fantastic achievement Toby!

GRADE 8 REPORT

Term 4 is well underway and all grade 8 students are working towards the half way mark of their high

school years! At our last whole school assembly the Strength Award draw was won by Becky

Bentley – congratulations Becky – there were a lot of names in this draw. So far this term the following

students have received Strength Awards – well done and keep up the great work!

Tyler Murphy-Goninon, Justin Burtt, Brock Hutchins, James Carter, Lachlan Judges, CJ

Agustin, Belle Needham and Briealee Connelly.

School Association Nominations

Congratulations to the following students who have put their names forward to nominate to be one of

the two student representatives for the School Association in 2018 and 2019. Each nominee has

completed a detailed application form and it is clearly evident that a lot of thought and effort has been

put into each one. These applications are currently displayed on notice boards outside the library for

students to read. The voting will take place on Monday 13 November and I wish each nominee the very

best of luck – it is impressive to see students put themselves up for leadership roles.

Walker, Luke Trinder, Oliver Lancaster and Jonte Armitstead.

Don College Resilience Roadshow: Student Report

On Thursday 26 October, the Grade 7 and 8’s went on a day trip to Don College to participate in a

mental health workshop. Whilst we were there we learnt about how to deal with mental health and

how drugs and alcohol can impact your life.

Along with many other schools we participated in a world record attempt for the most people hopping

for 10 seconds. We visited many stalls and had a brief chat about different mental health issues. We

were told to remember that there is always someone out there to talk to. We participated in multiple

activities at the stalls and also got some free stuff.

After all that, we went outside and had a go with the zorb balls and soccer balls. In the end we had a

pretty good day and learnt a lot to take home.

The final term is well on the way and will be over

before we know it. I encourage all students to give their

best efforts for the rest of the year. This effort will be

reflected in the students’ reports and will build a great

foundation for a successful year in grade 10. As

mentioned previously, we have had 46 students

completing an application to nominate to be part of the

Latrobe High Leadership team for 2018. They

completed the second part of the process when they

stood up in front of their peers and gave a speech. This

was very daunting for many, but i am very proud of

their efforts. Well done, everyone!! Voting will be on

Monday. Good luck!!
