Principal’s Message: Co-operate Attend Respect Excel Welcome Back to Term 4 Welcome back to Term 4! I hope everyone had a chance to enjoy some of the love- ly weather that we experienced over the break. This is a ten week term which will conclude on Friday 11 December 2015. For those planning ahead, the 2016 school year commences on Monday 25 January, with Tuesday 26 January as the public holiday for Australia Day, so the next school day will be Wednesday 27 January. Term 4 is usually busy and this one will be no exception. Please refer to the date claimer for this term’s events. Student Free Day – Monday 19 October 2015 Monday 19 October 2015 will be a Student Free Day. Staff will be attending pro- fessional learning on that day at Forest Lake State School as part of a cluster of schools working on Powerful Pedagogies project. We will be involved in this school improvement project over the next three years. We will provide updates and information about this project on a regular basis. Bus Zone and Loading Zone Just a quick update to parents and carers, that the area in front of the dental clinic is a bus zone. It is a bus zone 7-9:00am and 2-4:00pm, so please do not park in that space or even drop your children off there. The Loading Zone in front of the school has had the time on the sign changed to 2minutes, in line with the legislation around loading zones. This means it is a 2 minute maximum waiting period 7-9am and 2-4pm – cars cannot stay in the one spot for more than the 2mins. Drivers must remain in their vehicle, dur- ing this two minutes. I have attached a map for easy reference. Council has informed me that we have a grace period of one week (i.e. only this first week back at school). Council vehicles will be constantly patrolling this area. There will be no leniency shown to people who park illegally. C.A.R.E. Our school values are Care, Attend, Respect and Excel. Our Year 5 students will be attending an exciting camp at Maroon Environmental Education Cen-

tre. Students will attend from Monday 2 November until Friday 6 November. Information for par-ents regarding the program and what to bring will be sent home next week.

Year 6 Canberra Trip

In 2015, our Year 6 students have been provided with the opportunity to participate in our school

excursion to Canberra. The Year 6 students will attend from Sunday 15- Saturday 21 November

(Week 7 of this term).

The Year 6 Canberra trip information meeting will take place at 6.00 pm on Monday 26 October.

The venue for this meeting will be in the seminar rooms of the library. The meeting will commence

at 6.00 pm and finish by 7.00 pm. The purpose of the evening is to provide an overview of the trip,

finalise arrangements including the final costing per child and items required, and answer any questions.

Staff Carpark

A water tank for our fire hydrants is being installed at the back of Modular 5. The installation of

this water tank has meant that much of our staff car park has been closed off. Apart from the par-

ents/caregivers of kindergarten students (who should only park in the kindergarten carparks), no other parents/caregivers are to drive into our school grounds as it is very congested and danger-

ous.

Swimming

Swimming instruction will commence on Monday 2 November. Students in Year 2, 3 and 4 are ex-pected to attend. The program will run every Tuesday over 8 consecutive weeks. Cost per student

is $4.50 per session or $27:00 for the 6 sessions. This cost includes pool entry and bus travel. A

note outlining all dates will go home this week.

Prep Information Sessions for Parents

Parent information sessions for Prep students attending CPSS in 2016 will be held during Week 3 – 20 October – Tuesday evening 7-8:15 pm; 21 October – Wednesday 1:30-2:45pm; and 24 October –

Friday 9:30am – 10:45am. We still have some places available for Prep next year. If you know

someone who may be interested in attending our Prep in 2016, please ask them to call the office

for further information. If you haven’t already enrolled your Prep eligible child yet, I would encour-

age you to do so as soon as possible.

Koala Joeys Program

Next Wednesday 14 October, as part of our transition to school program, we will be commencing

our exciting Koala Joeys Program. It is a fun, interactive, capacity building Parenting Education

program which will help parents develop an understanding of early literacy, early numeracy, emo-

tional intelligence, social skills, gross and fine motor development and the importance of play and laughter in the early years. It will take place in the hall from 9:30am. A series of “Preparing for

Prep” helpful hints will be provided each week for parents to take home.

Playgroup will take place on a Monday morning from 9:15 until 11:00 for the rest of this term.

our respects to the Elders, their Ancestors and Future Generations”.

Deputy Principal’s Message Welcome back! I hope that you all had a relaxing and fun-filled break from the school rou-

tine. Term 3 seems like a long time ago already. However, before we throw ourselves into Term 4,

I would like to share more news with you from before the holidays.

ICAS: Twenty two students took part in ICAS English this year and the results and certificates

arrived at school just before the holidays. Well done to all the students who participated in this

rigorous academic competition. Particular congratulations are due to Alyssa Potter in Year 6 who achieved “Distinction”. This places Alyssa in the top 10% of students who took part across the

whole of Australia! Well done Alyssa! Certificates will be presented during assembly in Week 2. As

always, parents are very welcome to come along (Wednesday, 14th October 8.30am).

The Kids’ STEM Convention Thursday 17th September saw the culmination of a

Term’s work for the Year 5 and 6 students who had participated in the Kids’ STEM Convention. The STEM

Convention is a three part, middle-school initiative for

keen students in Years 5-9 from schools across the

Metropolitan area. The first part of the Convention

aims to Inspire the students through workshops and

keynote speeches at a Science, Technology, Engineer-ing and Mathematics (STEM) conference at the Univer-

sity of Queens-

land. Ten CPSS

students at-

tended before returning to

school to begin

extended Investigations. Students were supported in

STEM investigations of their own choice by Mrs Kirsten

Bailey and myself and worked over an eight week period to

complete their investigations. They then attended the STEM Forum at the Queensland Academy of Science,

Maths and

Technology where they presented their work to a

panel of judges and shared their findings with other

students, parents and teachers. This, the final part of the Convention, was a fabulous celebration of

the students’ achievements.

With over 300 students taking part, the

competition was very stiff! CPSS students did not win awards in their nominated

categories but all the students who took

part agreed that they had learnt much

and enjoyed the experience very much.

Mrs Bailey and I are extremely proud of all

the students. It was wonderful to see them speaking with confidence to so many interested visitors and to watch their confidence blossom as

they realised just how much they had achieved. The Year 5 team won school nominated awards

for their organisation and determination. This was the first time that Year 5 students had been

permitted to take part in the STEM Convention. They were competing against students in other

grades up to Grade 9 and did a fabulous job!

Page 4: Principal’s Message · The Year 6 students will attend from Sunday 15- Saturday 21 November (Week 7 of this term). The Year 6 Canberra trip information meeting will take place at

I would like to congratulate all the students on their achievements – their work was imaginative

and rigorously scientific! Investigations included:

Developing and Fostering Resilience in Children: Presentation by Professor Paula Barrett Parents, Caregivers and Teachers are invited to a presentation by Professor Paula Barrett. Anxiety and depression are becoming increasingly common amongst children. These serious afflictions can prevent children from engaging with daily life in a healthy and positive man-ner. Children experiencing the symptoms of depression or anxiety may have trouble with: interpersonal relationships, social competence, peer relations and adjusting to school. Professor Barrett is internationally recognised as a prominent scholar and ground-breaking researcher in the field of child psychology. Dr Barrett has a distinguished international rep-utation as a keynote presenter and has been published widely in the area of prevention and treatment of anxiety and depression and the promotion of resilience. I have heard Professor speak before and found her to be very inspiring and practical. For further information please visit Dr Barrett’s website: http://pathwayshrc.com.au Professor Barrett is coming to speak at Silkstone State School about supporting young peo-ple in growing their resilience. Parents and caregivers from other local schools are invited to attend.
