IF YOUR CHILD IS SICK Illness seems like it is unavoidable, but there are ways to try and fight it. We ask parents to please keep their child(ren) home for 24 hours after they stop showing symptoms of illness. This helps us keep the healthy children well and hopefully stop the spread of illness though a classroom.

Students in Junior Kindergarten through grade 3, please remember that Jiggi Jump was re-scheduled for Wednesday, May 7th.

HAT DAY Friday, May 23rd Wear your coolest, most colourful, funkiest, wildest, funniest hat on Friday, May 23rd.

LAST PIZZA ORDER FOR THE YEAR

Pizza order forms will be available on-line and out-side of the office on Tuesday, May 20th. All orders must be returned by Frid ay, May 23r d.

NEW AT GORDON A reminder to our students and parents when leaving (or returning to) the school for lunch or appointments. Parents, kindly check in at the office first whenever you visit the school. We will then page your son/daughter to the office. We are asking that all students sign out or in ( a sign in/out sheet is inside the office ) when leaving or returning to the school, so we can ensure that all of our students are accounted for at all times. As always, written permission notes are expected in order to leave the school grounds if a parent is not present for pick-up (i.e. lunch) . Thank you in advance for helping to keep our students safe.

LOCKERS We are asking all students to either pur-chase a lock or carabineer to keep their locker doors closed by May 6th . We realize that many of our students share a locker space. We are encouraging students to develop organizational skills along with taking pride in their personal space along with our school. With this effort it allows Mrs. Cook (our custodian) to keep our hallways clean and also keep our special needs students safe as they travel from class to class. Thank you in advance !

Cheerleading

Intramural Fun

Over the last few months, over 100 grade 4,5 and 6 Gordon Grizzlies have participated in our 3 on 3 intramural basketball league. Teams, using N BA names like the Bulls, Pacers and Raptors, played each other every Thursday and Friday during 1st recreation break with 8 teams playing 4 games simultaneously. As you can imagine, the gym transformed into a lively and competitive place to be full of great sportsmanship and camaraderie. As April comes to an end, Eastern and Western Division champions have been declared (76ers in the East and Knicks in the West) and now a semi-final game against the undefeated Bulls and Pac-ers will decide which teams go to the League Championship. This intramural league has been a fun, active and exciting part of our junior division.

Important Information for Parents and Guardians

Measles in Ontario

Between January and April 1, 2014, Ontario has had 11 cases of measles. Recent measles outbreaks have been reported in

Hamilton and Ottawa areas. In 2014, to date, there have been no laboratory confirmed cases in Niagara.

Niagara Region Public Health strongly encourages parents to fully vaccinate their children against measles.

About measles

Measles is an infection of the lungs (respiratory system) that is caused by a virus

It is easily spread from person to person

Nine out of 10 unimmunized people who come in close contact with an infected person with measles will get the disease

Measles is a serious disease, 1 in 10 will develop complications, 1 in 1000 will die

Who is at risk?

Anyone born in 1970 or after who has not had two doses of measles vaccine is considered susceptible to measles

Infants under one year of age, pregnant women, and persons with weakened immune systems can get very ill with measles

Symptoms of Measles

Fever of 38.3° C (101° F) or greater

Cough

Runny nose and red/watery eyes

Small red spots with a white speck in centre (Koplik spots) also develop inside the mouth

A red blotchy rash on the face begins on the third to seventh day and spreads downward to the rest of the body

The rash will last between four to seven days

Measles usually last for two weeks

How it is spread?

Measles is spread easily through the air or through contact with droplets from the nose and throat of infected persons

Particles from an infected person can stay in the air for long periods of time and infect others in the same room or in

neighbouring rooms. People infected with measles can spread the disease to others four days before the rash appears

and up to four days after the rash appears

How to prevent measles?

Measles is preventable through immunization with two doses of measles vaccine

The first dose is given at 12 months of age and the second dose is given between the ages of four to six years

If you are unsure about the vaccinations you or your children have received, contact your health care provider or Public

Health

If you think you may have signs and symptoms of measles:

Remain in your own home and do not attend any social and group gatherings. If you think you have measles, it is important that the infection is not passed to others at the doctor’s office

Call ahead and tell the doctor’s office about your symptoms and that you may have been exposed to the disease

You may be given the last appointment of the day, and when you arrive, you will be given a mask to wear and may be

placed into an examination room right away

To receive the measles vaccination, please contact your health care provider, visit a walk-in clinic or contact the Vaccine

Preventable Disease program at 1-888-505-6074 or 905-688-8248 ext. 7425 to set up an appointment.
