PAGE 2 MARRICKVILLE WEST PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

“Marrickville West Primary School is a team. We work as one (as our motto says) and we each have a role to play in making this school a place where all can succeed in our time and in our own way.I’m going tell you a story about something that happened to me in primary school. Sport has never been my strength. However, one lunch time, a kid I didn’t know very well, convinced me to join a game of softball. I was scared. I knew I couldn’t throw very far and I was nervous about looking silly when I missed a catch. But I gave it a go. After weeks of practising throws and catches, running from base to base, sliding dramatically into Home like we’d seen in American baseball on TV, we imagined we were sporting super heroes. Then our principal entered the team in a gala day competition. Maybe we were a bit over-confident. Maybe it was bad luck. Maybe we just weren’t very good … But we played one game, had 3 players out in a matter of minutes, zero home runs and ended up coming last. We were crushed. There were lots of lessons that came from that experience, but I realised later that I’d found something through that defeat, that I didn’t know I’d been looking for. I learned how it felt to be part of a team. We had not started off as friends, but as a team we had worked together. We cooperated, communicated and encouraged each other to do our best. We had a common goal. Everyone played their part and every part was important. Many of my greatest achievements and most satisfying failures began from lessons I learned that year. It always feels great to win, but teamwork and building a sense of community makes us all winners, regardless

of the score. Our Year 6 sign-writing team chose a quote by Helen Keller to put on our school sign earlier this year. Helen Keller could not see, and she could not hear, yet with the help of a teacher who had also been blind, she learned to read braille and to speak. Helen Keller understood the power of teamwork. She is quoted as saying, “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.” At Marrickville West in 2018 we have met our challenges with exceptional team work. Today we acknowledge the achievement of some very deserving individuals. The school Reports that go home this afternoon will acknowledge the effort, progress and success of many more. At the same time, we remember what we have achieved together.I would like to acknowledge the staff of Marrickville West. In a year where student numbers have grown, a support unit has been established and there have been more systems changes than at any other time in our school’s history, our teachers, office managers and support staff have continued to put our students and relationships first. Our strengths as a professional team, have been galvanised through collaboration, creativity and good humour. As a result, we have met the targets of our School Plan and continued to improve outcomes for our students.Thank you to our parents and friends who often share in the humour, and work beside us to create the supportive and dynamic learning environment our children need to thrive. Thank you for your trust, your teamwork and your friendship. At the heart of our school is the strength of our community. That community starts with you.

To the students of Marrickville West, each with your own story – thank you for giving your best. For caring for each other, for finding the confidence to take risks in your learning, the persistence to keep going even when the going is tough and the resilience to bounce back when things go wrong. Being a school captain is a great opportunity to learn leadership skills, meet awesome people and have loads of fun along the way. “In my mind the person to be school captain must be someone who can always see the positive side of things and be able to sort out difficult situations no matter how bad your day has been. I feel being school captain has encouraged me to learn this skill over this year. Now being school captain for me was a once in a life time opportunity that I will definitely never forget, but I do think there are a lot of things I would have done differently if I had a second chance at being school captain. The first and most essential point is actually one of the things that I didn’t realise until I felt that it was too close to the end of the year to make it happen. This is the fact that the teachers are here at school to number one, take care of us, number two, educate us, and thirdly, to make sure that we are learning in a fun environment. However, when it comes to being a school captain they are not going to give us a long list of things we have to do to make the school a better place. No. They are going to let us take initiative and take ideas to them instead of them bringing ideas to us. I wish I’d encouraged other students to tell me and the other leaders their opinions on what we could do to make the school overall a better place than it already is and then taken some of those ideas to the teachers.Being school captain of Marrickville West has been an honour for me because I got to represent a place that has been my second home. It’s full of unique peers, friends and supportive teachers as well as the best principal of the best school ever, Miss Ling.A highlight of being school captain for me was being here for the opening of the Water Eco Garden. I’ve always loved the natural outdoor spaces at Marrickville West, and I will miss them. The group of year 5s this year are all amazing people and I really do think that they will make a difference. Good luck year 5s and I hope you all enjoy 2019.”

“I think school captain is a fantastic once in a life time opportunity. If you do get the chance take advantage of it do as much as you can to help the place that helped you grow and know that the teachers will only tell you what to do but you have to make your own way, do things your own way ,be kind ,caring and most of all helpful to students ,teachers everyone that needs your help. You have to be there for them even if you’re playing a game or if you’re just tired this is what being school captain is Good luck to everyone and may the odds be ever in your favor.”

A catastrophic flight with some turbulanceFor two weeks, some students form Year 6 had the opportunity to work with aviation experts from the Australian Air League. Teachers had chose 8 students who harnessed their inner Einstein to manufacture an Ochroma Pyramidale wood plane with playdough used to create balance. They were under the instructions of Mr Malcolm Fraser and Mr Michael Chamberly who are currently constructing a life-sized plane fit for two. 8 gliders were perfected by them and were distributed between the students. Some had sand-papered their nails while some had stuck super-glued their fingers together. At the end, almost all the planes were destroyed except for Bobby Airlines. All the ripped skin and half nails were all in vain. We would like to thank the Australian Air League for broadening our understanding of aviation, Maths and physics.

Stage 1 had an art incursion on Wednesday. Several professional and community artists came and shared a presentation about their art to the students. It was a great experience for students to be able to see a variety of art and learn about the different art making styles. Students were able to appreciate the work of local artists and see how people make art professionally.

Yr 6 Fun DayOn the 7th of December 2018, year 6 went to their fun day at Sky zone. Thankfully their bus fees were paid off by the game day fundraiser, Yay! All students loved the experience and wished they could do it every day. We got to do the Ninja Warrior/enduro course, some of us (the lucky ones) got to do dodge ball, then we got to do flips on the big trampolines. Finally we got to do the climbing zone. Sadly, Mr. Evans made us painfully, sadly, horridly leave. The day was magnificent, filled with pleasure, fun times, some down falls, but all in all, it was a great day!

Shekara Hartnett: Contemporary Aboriginal artist, Shekara Hartnett (a Gumbaynggirr and Wangkumara woman and mother of Latrice in 5D) recently visited us to talk about her artwork. We thank her for sharing the inspiring stories which have informed her artistic practice and for encouraging 5D to represent their own stories in unique ways.

School PicnicOn the 11th of December the annual school Picnic accrued. All students had to be at school by 9.20AM for the roll check, the year 6 where the first to leave it took approximately 1hour to get to Balmoral Beach. It was a great end of year activity to unwind from 2018. Throughout the day we had fun activities on the sand. I think the teachers had a great time from a range of burying Ms. Whitfield in the sand to teachers having a great time swimming. Despite the humidity, the water was still beautiful. The clouds were grey but with the help of Marrickville West primary school the rain held off until we got back to school. The school picnic is definitely one of the most iconic days at Marrickville West Primary School.

WE NEED INSTRUMENTSMore and more music is being played and enjoyed at Marrickville West. There are choirs, recorder ensembles, rock bands, concert bands, ukelele groups and more.Music helps children in many ways, including numeracy, literacy, social skills and confidence – all while learning and loving MUSIC.The band program is growing and we don’t have enough instruments for everyone who wants to join next year, but we are determined to find them.We are committed to providing the opportunity to learn an instrument to anyone who is keen, and we make it as affordable as possible. If you have an instrument such as a trumpet, sax, trombone, bass guitar gathering dust – or know someone else who does – we can breathe new life into it.Please contact Thomasin on [email protected] if you can help.

Eco EdStage 2 has completed their eco education lessons. cooksriver.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/10-Things-web.pdfThese were the 10 ways to Keep the Cooks River Clean they learnt about. We encourage people to choose these behaviours at home. Stage 2 learnt a range of things including how to know what native birds they can hear in the playground both visually and by identifying the bird calls. The websites attached are what were used to learn these skills. Jo came to work on her day off with her young twins, to explain her job and to answer great questions from Yr 2 students all the way up to Yr 6 (including from both of our school captains) about coal, renewable energy and how young people can participate in our democracy.

The strike received saturation coverage in Australia and was also covered by global media. When asked by ABC PM’s Linda Mottram whether the school strike 4 climate had any impact on world leaders meeting in Poland for the climate summit, former president of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Manuel Pulgar-Vidal said “yes”. That said, the final word goes to Jo Haylen MP, who posted to her Facebook page “These legends from Marrickville West Primary School are off to fight for their future. Cyber safety talkOur local police youth liaison officer, Constable Casey, visited the year 6 class to teach us about cyber safety of social media and the consequences.
