CONTACT US PRINCIPALS MESSAGES Issue 13 2020 Wednesday 02 December 2020 There has been so much happening over the last two weeks I thought I would give you all a short overview. We greatly appreciate all the PTA do for the school and the money raised to pay for the many activities and resources that the school is unable to fund. We also appreciate the parent and caregiver helpers for the road patrols and the many events we have that require extra adults. The Board showed their gratitude last Wednesday at the Thank You Evening. A special thanks went to those helpers and PTA members who are moving on after their youngest children head into Year 9. Thank you to those who have completed the Health and PE Survey. Your views will certainly help shape the curriculum next year. If you still have not completed the survey you have until Friday to do so. The PTA disco was enjoyed by all the students. This is a great event to finish of the year. Thanks to all the PTA helpers, the School Councillors and the staff who attended. The Year 6 students headed off to camp today. Hopefully they will have better weather than we had at the beginning of the week. They will spend the 3 days at Chosen Valley and enjoy the challenge of some of the activities they have available. Its fantastic that senior students get the chance to go on two camps while they are at Opaheke School. One at Year 6 and one at Year 8. The PTA and School contribute to the cost of camp to keep the cost low. This enables every student to go to camp. For this year only Prizegiving will be during the day on Thursday 10 December at 1.30pm. We would love to see as many Year 8 parents there as possible. Year 8 students graduate on Monday 14 December in the evening. Year 8 students do not come to school Tuesday, unlike the rest of the school. With no concerts or grandparents day we are making the most of the time we have now to continue our learning right up to the last day. We appreciate parents not taking their students out of school before the last day. Being only a two day week in Week 10 there will be no newsletter but I will do a short one page Wrap Upfor the year. WHATS BEEN AND WHATS COMING The school councillors were scheduled to go to Wellington this year, however with the virus as a looming threat they decided that a trip by plane was not worth the risk. The councillors decided to travel by minivan to Lake Taupo. Its the first time to the lake for the School Councillors as a group. They organised the plan which started out with a departure at 5.45am and heading for DeBretts Thermal Springs where they particularly liked the 3 slides. Next up was a cruise on Lake Taupo to view the Maori rock carvings. We managed to fit in a walkabout around the Taupo township before the last activity at Rock n Ropes. The students were certainly challenge takers on this very high and difficult wire obstacle course. We headed back to Auckland but not before stopping at the Golden Arches in Hamilton for dinner. We arrived back right on time at 8.30pm. COUNCILLORS VISIT THE BIG LAKE GUESS THE JELLYBEANS The School Councillors are running a Guess the Jellybeanscompetition for the remainder of the term starting on Friday. 50c for one guess and $2 for 5 guesses.

Go Noodle at Lunch Times

Every Monday the juniors have the option of attending Go Noodle at

lunchtime. Go Noodle is a fun and energetic mix of dancing and aerobics.

Children learn the moves through guided dance and enjoy putting these

all together. Most children have their favourite dances which are

requested each week. Children can also access Go Noodle at home

www.gonoodle.com

Everyday Learning

Inquiry Learning

The Term 4 focus for Years 3 and 4 has been on the water cycle and learning that the amount of water on Earth doesn’t vary; it

recycles constantly. They have developed an understanding of the processes of evaporation, condensation and precipitation.

Campbell (R22) is typing up his research and his findings in a PowerPoint presentation.

Damien (R22) is completing his task of presenting his information of the water cycle in PowerPoint.

Phoebe, Tyler and Kowhai worked collaboratively to create an interactive water cycle poster. They used Scratch to code and MakeyMakey to connect the code to their poster. They proudly showed Mrs Marquet their interactive poster.

The Maungarei Garden is coming along nicely.

ROOM 10—YEAR 1 & 2

After our shared reading story: ‘The Zoo Vet’, we decided to build our own zoo. Room 10 could choose any materials available in class. Our learners really used their initiative and creativity and much fun was had by all.

At the start of term 4, we wrote our own senses poems. We got inspiration from our garden to find things we can see, hear, smell, touch and taste.

Money, Money, Money

Learning about NZ money.

Using our devices is fun! Always hard at work.

ROOM 24—YEAR 3 That was Year 3

Remember when we saw Mrs van and our new class for the first time? Remember the time we went splashing in the cool school pool? That was Year 3. Remember when a virus put us all in lockdown for many months and we video called each other? Remember when we had to stay distanced from our friends and the water fountains were closed? That was Year 3. Remember the day we stacked all the tables to make simple machines? It was crazy! Remember the laughter when Coach Cash taught us about the bank? That was Year 3. Remember the happiness and excitement when we won our first assembly award? We were so proud. Remember when we were taking a trip down memory lane and wrote this poem? That was Year 3.

We recently learned about a Canadian contemporary abstract artist called Sandra Silberzweig. She uses a range of bold and delicate lines, colour, shape and texture to create her unique works of art. We created some beautiful fish inspired by her techniques.
