SCHOOL FINISHES AT 1:30PM
A Message from the Principal….
School review: Our school review is now complete, with Jan the
reviewer presenting her findings to staff and School Council on Monday
of this week. As part of the review process, Jan spoke with members of
our student body to gain an insight into a student’s perspective of what
happens at Wandong Primary School.
Jack, Madison, Caitlin and Joshua told her all about our school—what
happens in the classrooms, in the yard and about the interactions between staff and students.
These four students did an amazing job and if we ever need
someone to publicise our school we certainly now know who to
call on!! They had definite ideas for the future and could justify
their thoughts. Thanks you all for your great input.
As a school we now develop our four year Strategic Plan for the
period 2013– 2016. This will be completed by December using
the feedback from the reviewer and our ideas for future
development.
This document is then broken into yearly cycles which guide our professional learning, teaching and
learning focuses and budget spending.
Second visit to Dianella Village Hostel: Last Monday a group of grade five students once again
headed off to Dianella Village Hostel in Kilmore for our second visit. As the village was gearing up
for the football finals, we thought we could create some colourful footy posters for the residents to
hang on their walking trolleys or bedroom doors.
The students had fun talking about football and were delighted to look at some very old photos that
one of the residents had of the Tallarook Football Clun in the 1940’s. The time just flew and before
we knew it we were back to school.
GOLD CERTIFICATE WINNRS:
Congratulations to Lewis, Taylah and Tali who all achieved a
Gold Certificate at assembly for three gold tickets this year.
Gold tickets are handed out by classroom or yard duty
teachers to students displaying our school values.
Super effort!!
Principals for the Day: Many thanks to the
following students who requested to be
“Principals for the Day” with their wish star for
150 nights of home reading. They have been
super helpers—assisting me with filing, teaching
small groups of students, presenting “Story
Time” to kindergarten students, cleaning the
yard, organising school council paperwork and
delivering important items to the classrooms.
You certainly made my job a lot easier on the day
on which you helped. Thank you!! :)
Welcome Back Miss Adams: Next term Miss Adams will return to our school.
Jaclyn has been teaching overseas for the past two years on a contract for the
Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (Victoria) and the
Victoria International School of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. This has
been an amazing lifetime experience for Jaclyn and we look forward to her
sharing her stories and memories with us. Jaclyn will fill some short term leave
positions, including the first five weeks of term four in 1/2 H whilst Mrs Chisholm
is on long service leave and will be an absolute asset to our school in what is the
busiest term of the year.
Have a great holiday break and thank you for your continued support of our school,
Rhonda Cole
Bunning Fundraising BBQ 20th October, 2012
On Saturday 20th October, Wandong Primary School will be holding a BBQ at
Bunnings Craigieburn, starting at 8am until 4pm (It usually finishes early because we
sell out!). Bring the family down and dad can go shopping and mum can help on the
stall or mum shops and dad helps. Please let us know if you can help. Return the
form with the times that you can assist us.

Done, Done & Done
I am very pleased to announce that the area around
the hall is now finished. It looks fantastic and we are
rapt with the finished product. The space will be a
wonderful outdoor learning area and an excellent spot
for students to relax and chill out during lunchtimes
and recess. The area will also work beautifully as a
space for our parents and school community to use
during assembly and other school events such as the
Christmas concerts and fetes etc. Check out the
before and after photos. Again, special thanks goes to
Kevin Hannam from Bendigo Bank in Wallan for donating $10,000 as part of their Community
Partnerships Program. We look forward to continuing our partnership in the future. I’d like to
also thank our Parents’ Club for donating money to project, to Michael Tessari for laying the
turf and finally to Steve Thrum for his vision, professionalism and expertise in completing the
area to such a high standard.
More Fun at Camp
This the grade three and four students head off to
‘Weekaway Camp’ in Lancefield. Weekaway is a great adventure camp with lots of challenging
activities for the students. Thanks to Mrs Yaneff, Mrs Langdon and Miss Chisholm, Mr Fearn
and Mrs Cole for giving up their time and to our parent helpers; Emily Gawley, Bernie Cram,
Paul Selvaggio and Malcolm Mumberson for taking the time out of their busy schedules to be
part of the camp.
Last week in the
newsletter, in a moment of
absent mindedness, I forgot
to thank Tony Bellman for
also giving up his time to
attend the grade 5/6 camp.
Sorry Tony. I headed down
to Ace-Hi Camp last
Thursday and it was great
to see everyone was having
an awesome time despite
the ordinary weather. Highlights included; flying fox, giant
swing, initiatives course and archery.

Muffin Break Muffin Vouchers: Just in time for holiday shopping!
Earlier this year we were fortunate to win the Muffin Break Facebook competition. Half of the muffins were
sold to families with the remainder of the muffins being provided through a voucher system. Vouchers are
available for purchase through the newsletter or directly from the front office….. What a great idea with the
school holidays coming up. No doubt many of us will be at Epping Plaza enjoying endless hours of shopping
over the holiday break and a cheap nice muffin with a nice cuppa will fill that hunger gap.
Cost: Each voucher will provide you with FOUR Muffin Break Weight Watchers Muffins
Each voucher of four muffins costs $8.00 each (which totals $2.00 per individual muffin) or 3 vouchers
(12 muffins) for $20 (which totals $1.60 per muffin)
Vouchers can only be used at the Epping Plaza store and are valid until 31st December 2012.
Don’t forget that these muffins can be frozen so they are also a cheap, nice lunch box filler.
Money raised is all profit for the school and will be used to pay for the instant turf we have laid on our new
terraced area near the hall. Thank you for your support.

Fundraiser: STUDENT PORTRAIT TEA TOWELS AND BAGS
Parents’ Club are organising a fundraiser for the beginning of term four – student portraits on either a
tea towel or a carry bag. Each student is currently completing a small self portrait which will be printed
onto a tea towel or carry bag. The whole school will be featured—even the staff!!
Tea towels (75cm x 50cm) can be purchased for $10.00 each; carry bags (45cm x 40 cm) cost $15.00
Orders and money must be paid to the office by the first Friday of term four (12th October) to ensure we
receive them before Christmas. These are a great idea for grandparents and for a keepsake… as well as to
dry dishes and carry bathers to the swimming pool! Great Xmas pressies too!
Samples are available at the office.

CAFÉ Reading in Grades 3-6
Comprehension
For Comprehension we are learning to infer. We have also learnt
how to make movies in our minds when we are reading. Sometimes
we write down or draw what we are seeing. We have just started
learning how to summarise the text and finding out the main idea.
Luke and Hayley 3/4S
Accuracy
Some strategies we have learnt include Cross Checking and Read On
and Come Back. If you don’t know how to read a word you can read
the rest of the sentence and come back to guess what the word
means. Ben 5/6E
Fluency
We have learnt about using different ‘gears’ when reading out loud or
in our heads. For example, ‘first gear’ is when you read a little bit
slower to get to know the text in a new book. ‘Fourth gear’ is
skimming and scanning the text to get bits of information.
Luke and Hayley 3/4S
Expand Vocabulary
To learn new words and their meanings we can check the dictionary
or thesaurus. Sometimes in text there will also be a glossary so we
have learnt to use that as a resource too.
When we find new words we haven’t seen before we put them on our
class Word Collector. We find out their meanings and we can use it
for learning to spell new words and use them in our writing.
Tajhana and Jacinta 5/P
