    Publishers Letter

Life beyond the screen is an increasingly common refrain as

we all grapple with the fallout from spending so much time

staring at our computers, tablets, and phones. The sense that

electronic devices flatten our experience, imagination, and

understanding of the material world is used to explain everything

from the resurgence of independent bookstores and vinyl LPs

to the crafting and DIY movements. This desire to embrace

life in all its dimensions seems as good an explanation as any for

the gratifying success of our stationery line, Paper+Goods,

and our recently launched childrens books. We all know that its

more gratifying to receive a handwritten note than an e-mail

or to make a list or entry in a beautifully made journal than

to jot down an electronic sticky, and that there are few joysas heartwarming as reading a book to a child. Whether youre

looking to spend more time away from your phone, want to

spread some tactile joy with a note or postcard, seek the pleasure

of making a note, sketch, or doodle with a newly sharpened

pencil in a cloth-covered notebook, or need an excuse to gather

a child in your life into your lap to explore the world throughthe lens of art and design, Im confident youll find exactly what

you need in this catalog, the first featuring these two exciting

new lines that, like all Princeton Architectural Press offerings,

    surprise and delight our readers.

Who Built That? BridgesAn Introduction to Ten Great Bridges and Their Designers

    Didier Cornille

In this latest addition to his popular Who Built That? series, Didier Cornille

the Golden Gate; from the first in cast iron to the longest in concrete; from

small footbridges to the tallest in the world. Cornille introduces each engineer

or architect and the main concepts of their work through charming step-by-

step drawings and accessible text. Who Built That? Bridgesis a fun primer for

children of all ages interested in learning about these incredible structures

and the engineering and design concepts behind each one.

    Pablo and His ChairDelphine Perret

For his birthday, Pablo receives exactly what he

doesnt want: a chair. Disappointed and angry, he

locks himself in his room, determined not to sit

on his new chair. But he starts to play around

with it and, by the end of the day, becomes a chair

acrobat. Pablo sets out into the world, performing

in amazing places and drawing great crowds.

Eventually, he returns, chair in hand, having

learned that the greatest gifts arent always themost obvious and often lie in our imagination.

Delphine Perret is the author and illustrator

of more than a dozen childrens books, which have

been translated into several languages. She has

a degree in illustration from the cole des Arts

dcoratifs de Strasbourg and lives in Lyon, France.

Her most recent book isPedro and George.

    Listen! Listen!Ann and Paul Rand

Paul Rand and his wife, Ann, wrote this book for

their daughter, Catherine, to explain the interplay

of sound and color. Pauls distinctive paper-

cut illustrations of bold shapes and bursts of color

    beautifully complement Anns rhythmic text,

encouraging children to listen and repeat noises

they hear every day: the blop of a raindrop,

the wham! of a shutting door, the whisper of

the wind in the trees, and the crunch crunchof buttered toast.

Ann Rand () trained as an architect and

is the author of several childrens books, including

What Can I Be?and Sparkle and Spin. Paul

Rand () was one of the most influential

    American graphic designers of

    the twentieth century.

Strange TreesAnd the Stories Behind Them

    Bernadette Pourqui, illustrated by

    Ccile Gambini

It was so quiet I could hear a pin dropAndy Goodman

Charmingly illustrated.. .. Each woody marvel is

described in a separate two-page, colorfully bordered

spread, with facts given on the left, and a dreamy,

    folk-style painting opposite.

    Kirkus Reviews

A child listens closely to the breeze as sounds evoke images

and imaginings. Under a great tree, a child pictured only asa pale-blue silhouette swings. Across the sky images float by:

a weathervane, feathers, a bright balloonmaking the

wind tangible. As the story progresses, Goodman plays

with perspective, shrinking the child and tree until sounds

take center stage. . . . A clever concept, in both progression

    and design.

The BrownstonePaula Scher, illustrated by Stan Mack

Like the tiles in a sliding puzzle, the animal inhabitants of

a three-story townhouse in The Brownstonehave to move

around many times, left to right, up and down and sometimes back

again, before everyone slots into the r ight place to live. This

picture book, now back in print, pairs a pleasantly confusing

story by graphic designer Paula Scher with Stan Macks color-

    daubed, wobbly-lined drawings.

    Wall Street Journal

Henry Edgewood loves making pancakes. He makes them

every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and everyone

in town knows his are the best. But when fame and fortune

knock on the door, in the form of a TV appearance andan invitation to the White House, Henryfar from family,

friends, and schoollearns that theres a lot more to

pancakes than mixing flour, eggs, and milk.

Thoroughly wonderful. A sweet, subversive parable about

the tradeoffs between creativity and commerce and the treacherous

way in which prestige can hijack our sense of purpose.

    Ian Phillips

Photographer Traer Scott follows up her ground-

breaking book Shelter Dogswith a new work of

equal grace and sensitivity. The portraits in

Finding Homenot only showcase a collection

    The Bark
