Princess and the PeaAdapted from The Orchard Book of Fairy Tales By Year 3/4A

Once upon a time there was a prince who wanted to marry, so what did he do? He looked for a princess

nothing else would do.

He travelled all over the world to find her, but without success. He went

home and was sad.

storm

One night there was a terrible storm.In the storm there was thunder and lightning and the rain was chucking it down.

Suddenly there was a knock at the door of the city gates and the king himself went to see who was there. When he opened the gates he saw a most forlorn and pathetic figure, who said she was a princess. She was soaked to the skin. Her hair was dripping wet and hung like rats’ tails. She looked so bedraggled but she said she was a real princess.

Luckily the queen knew exactly what to do. She went to the bed chamber and

removed all the bedding from the bedstead and placed a single pea on the bottom and 20 odd mattresses and 20

feather quilts on top. There the princess had to sleep all

through the night.

In the morning she was asked how she had slept “Oh very

badly “ she replied.

And then the queen and the prince knew she must be a real princess. So the prince and the

princess were married and lived happily ever after

years old.

• The king is fifty three years old• He has a big crown that he wears on his head• He is bossy• He is mad because the queen has lots of pets
