“Run by the Community for the Community”

Dear All

Welcome to our first and Christmas issue of Plants @ the Park, the newsletter for the Princes Park Garden Centre, which aims to keep you up to date with what we’re doing. We are a fully operational garden centre open five days a week, and a day training facility for anyone who wants to come and learn and share new skills.

Most of our plants and products have been lovingly grown or produced on site by our day opportunities team supported by staff and volunteers.

We have been very busy recently; repairing and renovating our café building (which is now available to hire as a community room); updating our public toilets; and working with the Wildlife Trust and lots more.

We have also been hosting our regular Tai Chi sessions. You’re welcome to join us every Friday afternoon.

We hope you enjoy reading our new newsletter and would welcome any comments or ideas for future issues

For more information, see our website and Facebook page.

What to do in your garden in December

Winter is definitely here! You won’t want to be in your garden too much in the cold and wet weather, but there are still a few things you might need to do. Now is also the time to start thinking about how you want your garden to look next year. Here are a few simple tips:

Remove any remaining fallen leaves

Prune trees Raise containers to prevent

water logging

Put out bird food Insulate outdoor taps Reduce watering of houseplants Plan next year’s garden

What we’ve been up to this month…

Our café had a leaky roof and our wonderful staff have been working very hard to repair it. It has also had a revamp inside. We are now offering the venue out for community hire. For more information contact mailto:[email protected]

We are working with the Lancashire Wildlife Trust and the Friends of the Chat Moss and Little Woolden Moss Project to help them with their aim of restoring 115 Hectares of previous peat extraction site. We are taking cuttings from heathers, sowing cotton grass seeds and sphagnum moss and propagating them with a view to replanting them on site.

Canine and coffee – We know that we have a lot of dog walkers in Princes Park and have set up a comfy space where they can get a nice hot drink and sit with their dogs after their walk.

Updating public toilets – the renovation and redecoration of our ladies, gents and accessible toilets are part of our recent site improvements.
