This is the first Sunday of Advent. Advent is the season when we call to mind the terrible situation that the world was in before Jesus came. Only by appreciating it can we celebrate, with proper joy, Jesus' coming on the first Christmas. But Advent is more than that. It is also the season when we call to mind that Jesus will come again. He will judge each one of us, personally, on how well we contributed to the work that He left for us to complete.

We are to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger in our midst, work for peace, and love one another as Jesus loved us. Advent is a time when we check to see how well we, personally, are doing this. Advent is a time when we remember, in a special way, that Jesus will come again in glory to judge us on what we have done and what we have failed to do in His absence. When we proclaim the mystery of faith. “We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again.” Until He does, we must walk in the light and complete the job He gave us. What are these four short weeks all about? Let me clarify advent with three memorable verbs. They have to do with the past, the present, and the future - with yesterday, today, and tomorrow. We remember, we repent, we rehearse. First we remember, Christmas has a past. To prepare for Christmas, we dare not live "business as usual" and expect to wake up on the 25th with Bethlehem's star in our eyes. We remember that night because when Jesus touched this earth with His flesh, life would never be the same again. For us Christians, the type of memory most exhilarating and most painful is memory of the birth and death of Christ. Exhilarating because God was born and died for us; painful because it makes demands on us that would change our lives. This brings the past into the present. In Advent we repent. You see, important as memory is for the Christian, our memory of Christmas ought not to mean that we live in the past. To live in the past is to begin dying. The miracle of Christmas is that Jesus' birth was not a solitary historic event in the "little town of Bethlehem"; it was a beginning. Christmas is now. These four weeks, we prepare for what already is, prepare for the present. Advent is the time to take away the obstacles that keep me from being enthusiastic in my faith, hope, and love; too sophisticated to love God with all my mind and heart, all my soul and strength; too self-centered to love my brothers and sisters as much as I love myself. Third, we rehearse. To rehearse is to go through privately what will take place more formally, publicly. Advent is a splendid time to rehearse for a final coming of Christ. He came to us first in our fragile flesh almost 20 centuries ago; He comes to us now when we love Him, when we receive Him in communion, when we open our arms to Him in the oppressed; He will come once more when time is about to end, when He will come to judge the living and the dead. Live Advent as if Christ were coming in majesty this December. This is what Advent is all about. It is not just a time to get ready to celebrate the first coming of Jesus. It is also a time to celebrate the second coming of Jesus. I wish you an enjoyable weekend and a truly blest and faith-filled Advent.

MASS Intentions for the Week

We encourage you to call with the names of family members who are ill and you wish to have remembered in prayer. They will be mentioned in the Petitions in the Sunday Liturgy for one week and then published in the weekly bulletin. In order to respect everyone’s privacy, these names must be given by a family member. Continuing prayer for our loved ones is very important for all involved. Therefore, we ask that you call the parish office and update us on your family member, so that we may maintain a current and meaningful list.

Rest in Peace Our prayers and sympathy to the families of

Helen Hogan (grandmother of Jamie Hogan), Lou Kosik (husband of Irene Kosik),

Stanley Szczesniak (father of Bill Szczesniak), Beverly Carkeep (cousin of Barbara Angelo),

and the recently departed.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.

Hand-Carved Olive Wood Gifts from the Holy Land

Proceeds benefit Catholic schools in the Holy Land

Did you know that 600 Christian families living in Bethlehem are completely dependent on carving olive wood figurines for their livelihood? The recent clashes in the Middle East have stopped the tourism industry in Bethlehem, causing most of those families serious harm in earning their living, and forcing many of them to leave their homeland. Emptying the land of Christ from Christians can have tragic consequences on the Holy Sites.

Issam from “Star of Bethlehem Group” came to the United States with a mission to help those families by selling their beautiful religious handicrafts. The cost of goods goes to benefit the Christian carvers to keep them working in the spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, the profit from sales goes directly to the needy Catholic schools and clinics in the Holy Land. Star of Bethlehem has been approved by many bishops and the diocese of Jerusalem. Please take a look at the beautiful olive wood artifacts the weekend of December 7-8 in the gathering space after Mass.

Grace Filled Women Ministry

The next meeting of Grace Filled Women is Saturday, December 14th. We will start at 9:00am with a Communion Service in the church followed by our meeting in Rooms 1-3.

We will have a guest speaker, Amanda Smith, who will share her experiences in evangelization on the college campus. As one of our own parishioners, Amanda has an inspiring message of her own renewed faith journey. Come join us as we hear Amanda’s story along with the lighting of the advent wreath and other activities.

Family Mass Next Weekend!

Join us next Sunday, December 8, at 9:30am for Family Mass & the passing of the Elijah Cup.

Coffee Sunday Dec. 8th

After 7:30 & 9:30 Masses

Please join us for coffee and fellowship!

Sponsored by the Knights of Columbus

Catholic Social Teaching (CST) 101

Who are you in the gospel story (Luke 16:19-31) of the rich man and Lazarus? If we were called home today how would God judge us? Do we work for the protection of all or are we just concerned with our own wants? Please join me on December 2nd at 9am or December 3rd at 7pm to discuss these questions. You are also invited to join me for Morning Prayer on the 2nd and on the 3rd for Evening Prayer. We will begin the prayers 20 minutes prior to the beginning of the CST 101 session.

May God bless you and your families,

Deacon Mark

The Thursday Night Bible Study group will meet again beginning January 16, for a 12-week session. The book we will be using is “The Bible and the virgin Mary.” The meetings are Thursday night from 7-8:30pm at the home of John and Joan Delisi. A short video pertaining to the lesson will be used each week, along with some review questions and discussion questions. You do not have to have a background in the Bible. Please give us a call by Dec. 8 if you would like to participate in this program or have any questions (847-265-1016).

Prince of Peace offers an opportunity for communal prayer to all who desire to come together to pray for the sick and dying. We hope to create a sanctuary of prayer for all those who find themselves helpless when sickness touches them or their family and friends. In many cases we cannot do much, however, we can pray for our sick and dying as well as for each other. Please join us on Monday, December 2nd at 8:15 p.m. The Chaplet will precede Benediction.

Direct debits and credit cards can be processed dependent on your preference. Please see below for options. If you require a different schedule please call Barb Ruhl, in the parish office.

“Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come.” (Matthew 24:42)

People who have had health issues or near-death experiences generally have a greater appreciation for each day being a gift from God. The rest of us usually take for granted that we will be around tomorrow. But when you start to look at each day as a gift, you realize all the little miracles that happen daily and grow in gratitude for all that we have been given. You begin to see God’s active presence in your life.

Have You Considered Electronic Giving?

We offer Electronic Giving for your Sunday Stewardship contributions, either by direct debit from your bank account or credit card, on a monthly or weekly basis. A form is available on the opposite page or on our parish website. After signing up, never worry about forgetting your envelope again! It also continues your support to Prince of Peace when you are out of town or on vacation.

There are cards available on the credenza in the gathering space that say, “I Support the Parish through Electronic Giving.” You can pick one up before Mass and place it in the collection basket instead of your envelope.

Parishioners who donate electronically to the Sunday collection receive a quarterly envelope packet, which contains envelopes for any special collections (i.e. Sharing Parish, St. Vincent de Paul & Archdiocesan collections) rather than the full monthly packet you receive now. Providing you with this new quarterly packet results in a savings to the parish.

If you know of anyone who could benefit from a prayer shawl, please contact Deacon Jim at the parish office or Jean Coon at 847-341-9334.

Weekend totals unavailable at time of bulletin submission.

2020 Religious Art Calendars are available in the gathering space. They are once again the gift of Ringa Funeral Home and Antioch Auto Parts. Their continued sponsorship is deeply appreciated!

Active Waiting…

The Second Vatican Council reflects upon the relationship between the coming of Christ and our activity to prepare for it.

In the Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, we read, "Far from diminishing our concern to develop this earth, the expectancy of a new earth should spur us on, for it is here that the body of a new human family grows, foreshadowing in some way the age which is to come....When we have spread on earth the fruits of our nature and our enterprise -- human dignity, brotherly communion and freedom -- according to the command of the Lord and in his Spirit, we will find them once again, cleansed this time from the stain of sin, illuminated and transfigured, when Christ presents to his Father an eternal and universal kingdom...." (#39). In other words, the spirit of Advent should naturally bolster our pro-life efforts, and the progress we make in promoting human dignity becomes the "building blocks" for the eternal kingdom.
