As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. And so it is with a heavy heart that I must now inform you that my time with you is soon coming to an end. The last four years have truly been amazing, and they will stand as some of the best years of my life.

When I started here four years ago I was a new priest who, let’s face it, didn’t know anything. During that time you all have accepted me into your parish, your lives, and even into your homes. You have truly taught me what it means to be a parish priest.

However, as wonderful as all of you, this parish, and the school have been, it has been tough being so far away from home and family. I have come to realize that for me to continue to grow as priest I need to be closer to family. While this has been an amazing parish, with amazing people, it has been difficult being so far from home, so in order to be closer to family I have asked and been given permission to transfer to the Archdiocese of Atlanta in July.

Moving forward I will finish out my term here and begin in a new parish on July 1st. The reason I am letting you all know so early is because, as the process to find a new associate for Prince of Peace begins, I wanted you to hear this from me before you heard it somewhere else. I ask that you please pray for me, for this transition, and for my future ministry. Thank you all for everything you have done for me, and know that all of you here at Prince of Peace are in my prayers.

Our prayers and sympathy to the families of

Phillip Bananno (grandfather of Dennis Meek),

and the recently departed.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.

We encourage you to call with the names of family members who are ill and you wish to have remembered in prayer. Your family member will be mentioned in the Petitions in the Sunday Liturgy for one week and then published in the weekly bulletin. In order to respect everyone’s privacy, these names must be given by a family member. After six weeks, unless other arrangements are made, the person’s name will be moved to our Prayer Line Ministry. Continuing prayer for those we love is very important for all involved: therefore, we ask that you call the parish office so that we may maintain a current and meaningful list.

TEEN MASS NEXT WEEKEND!

Teen Mass will be celebrated next Sunday, January 20th at 5:00pm. All teens are invited to stay after Mass for food, fun & fellowship.

Whoever gives to the poor shall not want (Proverbs 28:27)

Our food drive will continue next weekend, January 19-20, to benefit our Sharing Parish, Most Blessed Trinity’s Food Pantry. Collection baskets are located in the gathering space, by the meeting room hallway, to drop off non-perishable food items and toiletries before Mass.

Most needed items include: peanut butter (small jars), jelly, canned soup, canned tuna or chicken, cereal, rice (1 # bags), small bottles of cooking oil. Basic items are always welcome: canned fruits & vegetables, box dinners (Hamburger Helper, etc.), boxed macaroni & cheese.

Interested in helping? Sorting food, checking expiration dates, boxing up food or delivering the final boxes to Holy Family Food Pantry? Contact Elizabeth Pitel at [email protected] for more info.

The Make A Meal Ministry, Serving God’s people…

When a family or individual experiences a life event, whether happy or sad, there is comfort in knowing that others care. For over 14 years, members of our community have stepped forward to be that comfort, offering their time and talent to the people of our parish. Hello, my name is Gina Stanley, and I am the new Make A Meal Ministry Coordinator. As a Make A Meal Ministry Volunteer, the desire is to serve God’s People by preparing and delivering meals and most importantly, praying for those we service.

If you are interested in volunteering in the Make A Meal Ministry or are in need of the assistance of this ministry, we are just a phone call away. You can reach me in the Parish Office at 847-356-5850 or you can e-mail me at [email protected]. (I work in the Prince of Peace Parish & Religious Education Offices.)

Blessings,

Gina Stanley

Dinner for Two! February 16, 2019

Are you and your spouse looking for an evening out where you can enjoy a wonderful dinner, reflect on the time you first met and how you have grown as a couple over the years, (and avoid discussing household chores, schedules, or work)? Prince of Peace is offering a Dinner for Two opportunity on February 16th from 7:00 - 8:30 pm in the Parish Life Center.

At the event you will be served a four course meal including appetizer, salad/soup, entrée, and dessert. In between each course, you will be given an opportunity to discuss a short reflection question with your spouse geared to remembering what brought you together as a couple and how you can further strengthen your marriage. It will be an opportunity to just spend time together as a couple. After dinner there will be a short inspirational talk on marriage and then an opportunity for all couples to renew their marriage vows.

Babysitting will be provided onsite in a separate room. The cost for this event is $30 per couple. If you are interested, please register by Monday, February 4th through the parish office (847-356-7915), or email Deacon Jim at [email protected]. We will be limiting the number of couples this year to 20.

At this time we are also in need of people to help serve, prep and function as wait-staff for the evening. Contact Deacon Jim if you can help out.

THANK YOU FOR CONSIDERING THE GIFT OF CATHOLIC EDUCATION

Our school families will soon begin the process of applying for the Illinois Tax Credit Scholarships for the 2019-

2020 school year. Empower Illinois, the agency they apply through, has secured a few very generous donors

who are willing to match donations made from now through February 28, 2019.

In order for a family from Prince of Peace to benefit from your donations you MUST specify Prince of Peace

when completing your donation. You may not specify a family but you can specify the school. You may also

specify the Archdiocese of Chicago as a secondary so that if donations should exceed the need at Prince of

Peace your donation will be awarded to another Catholic School.

More information will follow regarding the process in future bulletins.

ELECTRONIC GIVING FORM

Our Electronic Giving program assures a continuation of your support even when you are not here. We encourage all of our parishioners to seriously consider utilizing this program. Most of us find that we attend Mass at parishes other than Prince of Peace during the year, related to vacations, family events, etc. We have received positive comments from parishioners who already utilize this program such as, “this makes it so much easier” and “I have peace of mind knowing that when I am out of town my obligations have been met.”

Direct debits can be processed either weekly or monthly dependent on your preference. Weekly debits are processed every Monday, and monthly debits are processed the first Monday of each month. Credit cards can be processed either on the 5th or 20th of the month. If you require a different schedule please call Barb Ruhl, in the parish office.

I (we) hereby authorize Prince of Peace Church, to initiate debits to my (our) account as indicated below. I (we) authorize the financial institution below, to credit the amount of such entries to my (our) account. This authority is to remain in full force and effect until I (we) revoke the agreement. Any revocation is effective only after Prince of Peace Church has received notification from me (us) to terminate this agreement in such time and manner as to afford a reasonable opportunity to act upon the notice.

Please complete information below & then select Direct Debit and/or Credit Card option. Weekend Stewardship Collection For the weekend of January 5-6, 2019

“John answered them all, ’I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming...he will baptize you with

the Holy Spirit…’” (Luke 3:16)

The Catholic Catechism states that “Jesus’ immersion in the water is a sign for all human beings of the need to die to themselves to do God’s will.” In other words, as baptized Catholics there is only one gift that we need to give to Jesus—the gift of ourselves. Surrender yourself to God, place your trust in Him and allow the Holy Spirit to work through you for the greater glory of God.

Total Envelopes $9,040.73

Loose $2,681.31

Electronic Giving $9,951.50

TOTAL COLLECTION $21,673.54

Have You Considered Electronic Giving?

We offer Electronic Giving for your Sunday Stewardship contributions, either by direct debit from your bank account or credit card, on a monthly or weekly basis. A form is available on the opposite page or on our parish website. After signing up, never worry about forgetting your envelope again! It also continues your support to Prince of Peace when you are out of town or on vacation.

There are cards available on the credenza in the gathering space that say, “I Support the Parish through Electronic Giving.” You can pick one up before Mass and place it in the collection basket instead of your envelope.

Parishioners who donate electronically to the Sunday collection receive a quarterly envelope packet, which contains envelopes for any special collections (i.e. Sharing Parish, St. Vincent de Paul & Archdiocesan collections) rather than the full monthly packet you receive now. Providing you with this new quarterly packet results in a savings to the parish.

Baptism and Life

“Whoever is moved by love begins to perceive what “life” really is. He begins to perceive the meaning of the word of hope that we encountered in the

Baptismal Rite: from faith I await “eternal life” - the true life which, whole and unthreatened, in all its fullness, is simply life. Jesus, who said that he had come so that we might have life and have it in its fullness, in abundance (cf. Jn 10:10), has also explained to us what “life” means: “this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent” (Jn 17:3). Life in its true sense is not something we have exclusively in or from ourselves: it is a relationship. And life in its totality is a relationship with him who is the source of life. If we are in relation with him who does not die, who is Life itself and Love itself, then we are in life. Then we ‘live’” – Pope Benedict XVI, Encyclical on Hope, November 30, 2007.

Veterans Get Free Tickets Thanks to Vet Tix

Veteran Tickets Foundation, or Vet Tix, is a national nonprofit that supports the veteran and military community with free community-based event tickets ranging from concerts to professional sports games. It kicked off in 2008 when founder and CEO Mike Focareto noticed several empty seats around him at Super Bowl XLII in Arizona and thought about how the men and women serving our country could enjoy being there. Since then, Vet Tix has distributed more than 4.9 million free tickets to the military community. How does it work? In a couple of different ways.

Vet Tix works with major sports teams, entertainers, promoters, organizations, donors and venues to distribute tickets. Vet Tix also accepts donated tickets. If you’re interested in donating tickets, simply visit their website and click on the “Donate Now” button.

If you’re looking to get some tickets, go to the Vet Tix website, register, and then browse all the available tickets in your area. They use a lottery system to ensure that everyone has a fair chance to receive event tickets. Interested in learning more about Vet Tix? Visit their website and search through all the events they have to offer.

January is poverty awareness month. How can you as a family help the poor, especially those in your own community? At the least, remember in your prayers today those who are struggling to meet their basic needs.
