- He set up a school of navigation and research center in Portugal

- Taught cartography and celestial navigation

- Improved seafaring tools and ship technology (like the compass and caravel)

Celestial navigation = finding your way by observing the sun, moon, and stars

- Never sailed on any of his expeditions

- Instead, sponsored expeditions with his $$$

- Founder of the Atlantic slave trade thanks to the many expeditions to the west coast of Africa that he sponsored

- Henry was in the military and led a successful attack on Morocco

- After Morocco was under Portuguese control, Henry became fascinated with the people

- Most were Muslim, leading to his desire to spread the word about Christianity

Order of Christ- Henry was head of the organization

- Goal of the Order of Christ was to convert non-Christians to Christianity

- Red crosses on sails

- Mysterious letter began circulating in Europe

- Told of a magical Christian kingdom in Asia that was in danger of being overrun by infidels and barbarians

- King Prester John supposedly wrote the letter

- Said he needed the help of Christian European armies to overtake the criminals

- Some letters said he was Asia, some in Africa

- People tried to find him, largely contributed to the Age of Exploration

- Never found him!
