A GLOBAL EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING PROGRAM

BackgroundThe Mindanao Study Visit is one of the GlobalExperiential Learning Programs of the AteneoInternationalization for Mindanao (AIM)Office. This short-term educationalimmersion program is open to students,faculty and staff members of AIM’s highereducation institution partners who are lookingto expand their cultural horizons by learningmore about Mindanao.

The study visit provides Mindanaoanexperiential and appreciative activities for itsparticipants. It also features week-long studytours and site visits with various local privateindustries, non-governmental organizations(NGOs), and partner communities andadvocacy groups.

Destination: Lake SebuThe Municipality of Lake Sebu is a first class municipality in the province of South Cotabato,Philippines. It is subdivided into nineteen (19) barangays and has a population of 87,442 as ofthe 2015 census survey conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority.

Lake Sebu’s shores and the surrounding rainforest are home to the indigenous Tboli, Teduray,and Obo Manobo. One of the major tribes, the Tboli are known for their weaving skills andbrassware production as well as fishing skills. Aside from the mentioned industries, thegovernment is also focusing on promoting sustainable ecotourism in the area.

Objectives Sessions

Engage participants to anintercultural encounter with thelocal partner community;

Heighten the participants' interestin the arts and culture of Mindanao,Philippines; and

Educate the participants on thehistory, contexts, and aspirations ofMindanao peoples.
