ScienceOur new topic for this term is Space.

Earth is one of eight planets in our Solar System.

These planets together with our star (the Sun) make up the Solar System.

Our solar system is one of billions that together are called the Milky Way. You can see some of the other stars and solar systems that make up the Milky Way from Earth. This is our galaxy.

And our galaxy is just one of billions that make up the universe. And those are just the ones we can see!

Check out this website that helps to understand the scale of how big the universe is. Don’t forget to click on objects that you are unsure about to get more information.

http://htwins.net/scale2/ - Copy the link or if reading this pack from your computer, click on the picture.

The sun is our name for the star at the centre of our solar system. It’s pretty small as stars go. Although it looks like it rises and sets the sun doesn’t actually move – instead the earth orbits around the sun and the other planets do the same.

There are 8 major planets. We tend to count them in order heading away from the sun. Pluto is one of several dwarf (small) planets in our solar system.

A way to remember the order of the planets is to use a mnemonic. A mnemonic is a tool that helps us remember certain facts or large amounts of information. They can come in the form of a song, rhyme, acronym, image, phrase, or sentence. Mnemonics help us remember facts and are particularly useful when the order of things is important. The first ‘M’ is silent.

Make your own mnemonic to help you remember the order of the planets.

Watch this video to give you more information about our solar system.

Create your own solar system showing the planets and the sun. Remember to think about the scale of the planets (e.g. Jupitar is the largest planet in the solar system and should look larger than all the rest. Venus and Earth are about the same size but Mercury should be smaller etc.). Be as creative as you can. Below are a few ideas.

Money Week ActivitiesThis week is Money week. We will be looking at budgeting and saving.

Activity 1

This activity will encourage you to investigate ways people can reduce their spending to allow them to save money more easily. We can save money by spending less in our everyday lives. Food is one area of our lives where we can consider reducing our spending.

Design a meal for one of the families below:

Page 13: primarysite-prod-sorted.s3.amazonaws.com  · Web view2020-06-13 · It is also Money Week. In the pack you will find money related activities for you to have a go at. Maths. ...

Things to consider when planning your meal:

a. What does their family like to eat?

b. What dietary requirements do their family members have?

c. What equipment will the family need for cooking?

d. What do they need to think about when planning a meal? Feeling full, healthy eating? You could use the Healthy Eating Plate image as a

tool. https://www.nhs.uk/livewell/eat-well/the-eatwellguide/

Now you have planned a meal, can you make the meal for under £5?

How might you lower their costs and save their family money? Can you change some of the ingredients, buy the ingredients from a different shop or use less of certain ingredients? Search for prices online and make a list of the cost of your ingredients e.g.

You could include the cost of the whole item

OR you could try the challenge of working out how much of the product you would actually use. Have a look at this example below.

Rice – 1KG from Asda. There are 1000g in a kg.

Rice portion per person = 60g.

A family of 4 will use 240g of rice so I will use 1.55 ÷ 1000 = 0.00155 (a gram of rice) 0.00155 x 240g = 0.372 so my answer would be 37p

Activity 2a

This activity will help pupils understand that families need to prioritise their spending so they can pay for their important bills.

Using the families from above, you will choose one family and choose them a ‘family activity’ so they can spend some quality time together and have fun. We will imagine that this is for an activity to take place in the future when Lock Down procedures have been lifted.

Make a list of activities that your chosen family could take part in.

Now think about:

How many of these activities would cost the family money? Which activities would cost more or less than others? Why might the family not choose to do some of these activities? What other costs might the family have that are more important than paying for these

activities? [Rent, household bills, transport costs etc.] What is the most important thing about a family activity? [Having fun, spending time with

your family etc.]

Activity 2b

Look at your original family activity idea, what changes could you make to the activity that would save the family money but still ensure everyone has some fun, quality time together?

Put together a presentation about their family activity idea – how would you persuade their fictitious family that their idea is the best? You could create a video presentation, a poster, a PowerPoint presentation or you may have your own idea.
