We understand at England Netball that primary school sport should include high-quality physical education as part of the curriculum and provide plenty of competitive opportunities and activities designed to meet the needs of all your young people. We believe that netball is a fantastic school sport, it is a fast, skilful, team game based on running, jumping, throwing and catching. These movements are fundamental in developing pupils’ agility, balance and coordination. We hope to support schools to use netball to raise standards, pupils’ achievements and attainment.

Netball is the fastest growing female team sport in England and we’d like to get even more young people involved and kept in the game. We’ve pulled together the following information to support teachers with their Netball Delivery.

HELLO FROM ENGLAND NETBALL

Page 3: Primary School Netball Information · England Netball that primary school sport should include high-quality physical education as part of the curriculum and provide plenty of competitive

England Netball recommends High 5 netball format for all children aged 9 to 11. It is a 5-a-side version of the 7-a-side game designed specifically for children. High 5 can be played by girls and boys and encourages maximum participation in every aspect of the game and even lets children score and time-keep, as well as enjoying a taste of every position. It boosts fitness and adaptability and provides a great social framework for players to strengthen friendships. Kids tell us they love playing it!

We have pulled together all of the information you need to get High 5 up and running in your school.

High 5 is the massively popular entry game of netball. Should you wish to learn more about the game watch our introduction to High 5 video online at www.englandnetball.co.uk/my-game/High_5

COMPETITION FOR YOUR SCHOOL

Netball

netball - fastnet

Quick introductionThis is a mixed game with different

rules from netball. It is mixed, there

are power plays and you can shoot

from outside the circle.

Think tacticsHow can you make the most

of a power play and choose

it at the right time?

Getting started ■ Can be played on an indoor or outdoor court.

■ Seven players play on each side play four

quarters of six minutes (if mixed minimum of

four players must be female).

■ Where a team has three males on court, only

one male is permitted to play within each third.

■ When boys and girls are playing against

each other ensure that they are appropriately

matched in terms of strength, skill level etc.

■ The Captain winning the toss chooses end

or first centre pass at the start of the first and

third quarter. The other team will have first

centre pass at the start of the second and

fourth quarter. All other centre passes will not

alternate but instead the game will restart by

the team who conceded the last goal.

■ Each team will have one quarter as a power

play where any goals scored will be doubled

(the power play quarter must be chosen before

the quarter starts).

■ Shooters may shoot from inside or outside

of the goal circle. All successful goals from

outside the goal circle will be worth double i.e.

two goal points (four points in a power play).

Successful shots from outside the circle count double.

In a power play, all goals scored count double.

twice on the left foot and twice on the right foot. Landing

foot becomes ‘STICKY FOOT’ (throw-down “sticky” feet).*

■ Start on one foot jump as high as you can and land on the

opposite foot. Repeat four times, twice on left foot and

twice on right foot.

■ Jump must be vertical not forward.

■ Balance must be held for four seconds (static jumping).

■ The foot should not move on landing.

■ Progress to running, on command jump in air and land on

one foot (sticky foot does not move) and balance before

putting down other foot.

■ When progressing to running, give them a target line on

court to run to, instruct them to jump over line, then land

balance.

* You can purchase some throw-down feet and ask them to

run, and on command find a sticky foot to land on.
