REPORT OVERVIEW

Each year public schools in Western Australia prepare an Annual Report of the school’s achievements, performance and directions over the year. This document is part of the school’s formal reporting process to the school community. This Annual Report is a summary of student performance, learning programs and highlights of 2018. It also provides an analysis of school performance for the past year which in turn forms the basis for future school strategic planning.

THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY

Mount Pleasant Primary School is situated in the southern Perth metropolitan suburb of Mount Pleasant which has an Index of Community Socio-Economic Educational Advantage (ICSEA) of 1139. In 2018, the school‘s enrolment of 431 included students from Kindergarten to Year 6.

The school was established in 1953 and enjoys strong community support. In 2015, Mount Pleasant Primary School successfully applied to become an Independent School. Governance is directed through a School Board consisting of parents and staff members. An active Parents and Citizens Association supports the school strongly through classroom involvement and fundraising activities, while a volunteer program focuses on the needs of identified individual students.

Through further development of community support and involvement it is intended to continue to enhance the school’s physical environment. Our aim is also to improve and refine policies and procedures across the school ensuring that our students are personally happy, successful and able to make positive contributions to our community. WESTERN AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM

In 2018 we continued to consolidate planning documents and delivery of the Western Australian Curriculum across the school in the areas of English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Services, the Arts, Physical Education and Health, Digital and Design Technologies, integrating Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Languages Other Than English: French, was introduced as a Specialist Teaching area for Year 3 to Year 6.

SCHOOL SELF-ASSESSMENT

Mount Pleasant Primary School has a rigorous self-assessment process where all learning areas are closely monitored and a review of data drives our future planning. School based testing is represented in our Whole School Assessment Schedule, inclusive of assessments for learning and assessments of learning. These generally include: Year 3 & 5 National testing (NAPLAN) and PP On Entry, Year 1 – Year 6 ACER Progressive Assessment Tests (ACER – PAT), Year 1 – Year 6 Brightpath and selected School diagnostic testing from K - 6. Assessments for learning and of learning are all research based and used to validate Learning Area monitoring.

SCHOOL STAFF PROFILE

In 2018 there were 29 teaching staff and 15 non-teaching staff. Specialist programs were conducted in Music, Art, Languages Other Than English (LOTE): French, Physical Education & Health.

2018 HIGHLIGHTS

• Student attendance data is consistently above state average and like schools. Mount Pleasant received a letter of commendation for excellent attendance.

• Consolidation of Curriculum Leadership Team in English, Mathematics and Science through a distributed leadership model, full implementation of Humanities and Social Sciences, Digital & Design Technologies and the introduction of French as a LOTE specialist learning area.

• Consolidation of whole school STEM initiatives (Science, Technologies, Engineering and Mathematics) with the inclusion of a STEM room.

• Comprehensive Student Services provision through the School Psychologist service, Individual Education Plans for Students at Educational Risk, Health Plans for identified students, Chaplaincy and the School Volunteer Program

• Edu-dance Concert, Athletics, Cross Country and Swim Carnivals

• Visiting Authors, Book Week, Scholastic Book Club and Fair

• Continued Manjar Kitchen/Garden Program – connecting purposeful sustainability practices through shared learning experiences.

• Wakakirri production in which MPPS received awards in:

• Best minimalist story awards

• Mininmal use of sets props and costumes,

• Spirit of Wakakirri award

• Participation in the Australian Mathematical Competition and Maths Olympiad

• Participation in Music Fest and Massed Choir

• STEM Week, including: STEM competitions buddy class activities and Parents as guest speakers

• Continued partnerships with CSIRO, integrating Science, Technologies, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in the Year 6 Automated Sustainable Garden System project with Cameron White.

• Throughout 2018 the school raised $2766.35 in the ‘Five Cent Challenge’ and presented Christmas Hampers to Transformation, Empowerment, Advocacy Relief (TEAR) & Rockingham Coastal District Care.

ENROLMENT AND ATTENDANCE

In December 2018 the school’s enrolment was 431 students (K-6). Enrolment trends have increased in the last 3 years with an additional 35 students. In 2018 there were earlier exiting of middle primary and senior school students to private schools. This aligns with some of the private schools having changed their intake year levels. Attendance data for Mount Pleasant Primary School indicates that levels are above state averages across all levels of schooling. The overall attendance rate at Mount Pleasant Primary School was 96%. The State average was 93%. This is yet another improvement from last year and a very commendable effort by both parents and students. Behaviour Management across the school featured a focus on values.
