Primary 1 Home Learning Week Beginning 15th June 2020
Hello P1! 😊
We are getting close to the summer holidays!
We are finding it hard to believe that all this time has gone by. As
ever we want to say you are all doing such a great job and we are
always so happy to be receiving emails and seeing what you have been
getting up to!
Hopefully the rain will stop soon and we can all get back outside to
enjoy the weather again.
Good luck for this week!
Miss Fleetwood, Miss Maxwell & Miss Webster 😊

Literacy
Every week: 1. Log in to your SumDog account and complete the new challenges that we have
set for you in spelling and reading/grammar.
2. Choose an activity from the literacy grid on the school website for
challenges that do not require technology!
Phonics
Here are the Alphablocks helping us to word build.
Alphablocks
This week we are revising the sounds: c, k, u, b, f
Daily Phonics Lesson
At 9:30 every morning there will be a lesson available on YouTube to revise
each of these sounds. These videos will be available for 24 hours. Click on the
link below and select the day’s sound under Set 1 Lessons.

Word Building Below are ten different words for you to spell this week. They are
differentiated into mild, spicy and hot words. Try one or two mild words first
and if they are too easy for you, move on to try some spicy or hot words!
Remember to use your Fred Fingers to identify all the sounds!
This week you could try:
Playdough Use playdough you have
or make your own to
build your words.
Hit the sounds Write out the sounds
you need and use a
spatula to hit the sounds
to build your word.
Sing them Use your beautiful voice
and sing the sounds to
build your word and then
sing your word!

Handwriting Practise writing c, k, u, b, f in cursive handwriting.
Top Tip! You could teach someone in your house how to use magic fingers for
writing in the air or on someone’s back!
Writing
A new Big Writing PowerPoint has been uploaded on to the website with new
ideas to encourage writing at home. There are enough ideas to last until the end
of term, with some left over in case you wish to continue practicing over
Summer. We suggest doing 1 a week 😊
We would love to see which one you choose so please take a photo to send to us
if you can!
Top Tip! Use a lolly pop stick to help you to remember finger spaces if you are
finding them tricky!
Reading
** To be taken to your child’s allocated reading book please log in to Oxford
Owl before clicking the link under your child’s reading group.Thank you! **
Everyone should have received an email from our school admin telling you what
reading group your child is in. Please click on the link under your child’s group to
be taken to their reading book for this week.
Top Tips:
1. Let your child listen to the story first. You can use the audio feature or read
the story to them.
2. Before they read the story, talk to your child about the pictures on each
page.
3. The first page of your child’s reading book has tips about what to do/ask
before, during and after reading. It also highlights words that you may need
to help your child to read.
4. Questions should be completed orally – we do not expect children in P1 to
write down their answers!

Red Words Practice
Red words are words that we can’t sound out using phonics. Your child knows
that these are words that we need to recognise, or they will trick us when we
are spelling or reading!
This week we would like you to learn and practice a new red word!
you
Click the link below to revise some of our old red words and give ‘you’ a go! 😊
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ri4u0TjAZ38&list=PLIDN_6YOWUNRt_n0dn2_632327E6a-vL7&index=7
There are lots of ways you can practise red words at home. Here are some
ideas;
• Ask your child to use each word in a spoken sentence, e.g. I like going to
the park, Chocolate is my favourite treat!
• Build each word out of playdough/sticks/lego/pasta or whatever you have
handy!
• Use pens, paint, chalk or water to practice writing them. Children especially
love going outside to write them as BIG as they can!
• Go on a red word scavenger hunt – write out lots of these red words and
hide them in your house/garden. Once found, can your child read them to
earn a bonus point?
Numeracy!
Every week: 1. Log in to your SumDog account and complete the new challenges that we have
set for you in numeracy/maths.
2. Choose an activity from the SEAL grids on the school websites. These
activities do not require any technology!
Below are some maths and numeracy activities for your child to complete. You
can try to work your way through them all, or just focus on the SEAL Chapter
that your child is working within.
MILD Activities (SEAL Chapter 5)
1. Take turns to roll a dice and cover the numeral with a counter. You can
play bingo or connect 3.
2. Ask your child to repeat this pattern:
You can ask your child to copy different patterns or ask your child to
make up their own pattern for you to copy.
3. Click the link below to play caterpillar ordering. Choose numbers 1-10, and
then put the numbers in order from smallest to largest to complete the
caterpillar.

SPICY Activities (SEAL Chapter 6)
1. Draw a picture to show the answers.
• Share 10 pears equally between 2 trees. How many pears on each
tree?

dog get?
• Share 20 carrots equally among 4 rabbits. How many carrots does
each rabbit get?
• Share 15 fish equally among 5 cats? How many fish does each cat
get?
• Share 28 marshmallows equally among 6 plates. How many
marshmallows on each plate?
Extra: Make an equal share story of your own. Draw a picture to explain it.

Health and Wellbeing – Building Resilience Unit 12 Expect the Unexpected!
We are continuing with our ‘Expect the Unexpected’ programme, and we hope
you are finding it helpful.
This week we are focusing on the idea of ‘Transition’ as our school year is
coming to an end.
Transition in to Primary 2
Click below to listen to ‘Dear Teacher’ by Amy Husband
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVWvwu31t5g
• Fold an A4 piece of paper in half. Title one half as ‘Primary 1’, and the other
as ‘Primary 2’.
•
• Talk to your child about what they have enjoyed about their first year of
school. Was it the playground? Choosing time? Learning to read? Ask them to
draw a picture of what their favourite part of P1 was on one half of the
piece of paper.
•
• Discuss the things that will be the same and different in P2. Encourage your
child to share their worries/fears.
•
• Talk to your child about what makes them excited about starting P2. It could
be finding out who their new teacher is, getting a new school bag, or being in
a different classroom. Ask them to draw this on the other half of the paper.
•
• Put this picture in a prominent place at home (e.g. the fridge/next to your
child’s bed) and refer to it often throughout the summer holidays to help
prepare children for their return to school.

Session 8 – Movement
Watch:
Click on the link below to watch a video introducing session 8 of The Lion King
Experience https://www.lionkingexperience.com/sessions/kids/8
Explore: • Think of an everyday activity that involves movement (e.g. brushing your
teeth or getting dressed).
• Silently practice that movement.
• Repeat the movement, this time exploring the following
o Levels: high, medium, low
o Speeds: slow, medium, fast
o Qualities: sharp, bouncy, light, heavy, fluid
• Now pick a word from each category and try doing them together.
• Challenge: how can you use your whole body?
CREATE:
• Now you will become a choreographer and create a dance to your song
from Session 7!
• First – list the types of movement the character in the scene might do
(e.g. fly, prowl, play, hunt).
• Next – decide what types of level, speed and qualities you want to use
based on the music.
• Finally – create some moves and put them together in to a dance for your
song!
Share: We would love to see photos of you taking part in this project! Don’t forget
that you can upload photos to our school twitter feed or email them to our
school admin!
