FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER ANDREA KNOX In 2012, Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore, became the first women to be received into membership at Augusta National Golf Club. This year marks another truly significant stride in the club’s history and for women’s golf; the Augusta National Women’s Amateur. After decades of watching the Master’s on TV, it will be a first for the world to watch as woman negotiate these hallowed grounds. As historic as this event is, the field of extraordinarily talented amateur women is truly amazing! Final round coverage will air Saturday April 6th from 12:00 to 3:00 PM on NBC. Don’t miss it!

But don’t miss out on some of the other great events that revolve around the Masters. 80 junior golfers will compete in the finals of the Drive, Chip and Putt contest on Sunday April 7th. GOLF CART GUIDELINES 1. Observe the 90 degree

rule

2. Obey the green post and exit the fairway to the cart path

3. Keep carts on the cart path around all tees and greens and on all par 3’s.

4. Handicap flag carts should keep the cart at least 30 feet from the green as much as possible. Avoid slopes and limit travel to the shortest route possible.

5. Scatter cart traffic when entering and exiting the fairway

6. Always buddy up in carts. No single riders unless in a threesome.

CHECKING IN FOR GOLF

Please be reminded that if a

Cart Attendant is not present

when you arrive at Bag drop,

you are asked to check in at

the golf shop. This will help

us know who is on the course

or practice area in case of

emergency and to record the

correct charge (if any) to your

account. Most days after

2:30pm, you will need to

come in the golf shop to check

in and retrieve a cart key.

and Putt is a free, nationwide youth golf development program open to boys and girls, ages 7-15, in four age categories. The competition tests the skills essential to playing the game – accuracy in driving, chipping and putting. But of all the traditions at the Masters, the annual Par 3 Contest is one of the most endearing. Held on Wednesday of Tournament week, the Par 3 has become a true family affair. Players children, grandchildren, wives, nieces and nephews - all decked out in Augusta National jumpsuits, serve as caddies for this fun stress reliever prior to the start of the tournament. Whether you choose live streaming, twitter, a mobile app or television coverage; there is a lot to watch and a lot of coverage available. Who are you rooting for this year?

Our Women’s Member Guest this year is honoring the tradition of the Master’s along with celebrating the inaugural Augusta Women’s National Amateur. The tournament committee has been hard at work preparing for a fabulous event and we all look forward to welcoming your guests!

The Men’s Member-Member is also on tap this month. This traditional round robin match play features 5 nine hole matches with a shoot out to determine the overall winner. Last year’s champs Dick Boulds and Joe Dresnok are ready to take on all challengers. Information and sign ups available in the golf shop.

Feeling inspired to work on your game? Ladies, please join me Wednesday’s this month for a unique format aimed to help you improve your short game and scoring we are calling “#36”. We will meet at 3:30pm each Wednesday in April to play a nine hole round of golf from approximately 50 yards. Shoot 36 or better and the following week you’ll move back another 10 yards and test your skill. Shoot 36 from there and you’ll move back again the following week. We’ll keep a leader board to track your progress but we’ll use nick names to relieve any score posting anxiety. The aim is to have some fun, meet some different people and improve your scoring around the greens - and I’ll say it again - have some fun! The only charge for the event is your cart fee and there is a sign up in the golf shop so I’ll have an idea of how many will participate.

A nod to everyone for continuing to follow our Golf Cart Usage guidelines on the golf course! As we get deeper into season with lots of rounds of golf, the importance of keeping carts on the paths around tees and greens, observing the green stake and taking your cart back to the cart path and the 90 degree rule become more and more important to maintain healthy turf! Keep up the good work!

Now get out and Play!

in learning golf is “it is taught as a series of

calisthenic exercises, but it is learned as a game.”

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT TJ WEST

March was a fairly good weather month! The course received 2.25 inches of rain and we saw our last cold temperatures of the season! The nights are still cool, but the daytime temperatures are beautiful! I just wish that it was not so windy! The temperatures this winter were mot too warm…but not very cold either…especially compared to last year!

Spring is here and it is time to start growing grass! In March we applied 13 tons of fertilizer to the entire course! This will help the turf recover from a busy Winter! We will begin our pre-emergent herbicide applications to eliminate Summer weeds. Ideally this would of happened in March! However, the amount of wind at the end of the month stopped us from doing the applications! In April we will begin to close the course every other Monday. This will allow us to be on a good schedule of ver-ticutting/topdressing greens and edging bunkers! Closing on Mondays will make the course better for a busy Tues-day through Friday! We are currently working on adding, subtracting, and properly placing sand in bunkers. Be-tween the wind and washouts from rain, the sand depths are all over the place! Please be patient as this is a lengthy process! If you have an issue with a bunker, do not hesitate to let me know so that we can address it! With the growing season rapidly approaching, we will begin to lower the height of cut on all mowers. In the fall we slowly raise the height in order to have as much leaf tissue as possible. This protects the turf from stress (weather, cart traffic, etc.). I am very happy with the amount of turf that we have heading into the Spring/Summer! I believe that the turf is the healthiest that it has been, for this time of the year, in my almost 5 years at Grand Haven! We have a great staff at Golf Maintenance that is working hard to put out the best conditions possible! April will not only be a busy month for me on the course, it will also be a busy month for me personally! Along with all that I mentioned earlier in this newsletter…my wife and I close on the purchase our first home April 5th! I am already exhausted thinking about the move! However, my wife, kids, and I are excited to have something that is ours! If that isn’t enough, I will be traveling to Kingsmill for the first Escalante Superintendent Summit. I will be gone for 5 days starting April 22nd! It will be a great experience speaking with the other Superintendents, as well as the other industry professionals that Escalante will be bringing in! Fingers crossed that the move doesn’t kill me before the summit! As always I can be reached by e-mail, [email protected], for questions or comments!

FROM THE OFFICE ADMINISTRATOR PATSY BETTENCOURT-PAPPAS Happy Spring!! I hope the early hints of wonderful weather are treating everyone well and you are starting to get back in to the spring of things! So what better time for a little spring cleaning? Pull out those clubs; how do the grips look? Billy would be happy to take a look at the condition for your clubs and recommend what would be best for you and your style of play. Is your golf bag looking a little worn? The new 2019 models are looking awfully tempting! And shoes, you can’t have too many pairs of shoes. Spring is a fun time to come out in full bloom. This is good time to thank you members for being so prompt with statement payments and notifying the office if there has been a change to your credit card or banking information; it truly helps keep the confusion down. And do remember, if you have a change to your email address, let me know! If you try to access the Grand Haven Club website or Szen Statement site with a new, unrecognized email address as you user ID, the system will reject and not allow access. Emailing me directly with the new information will assure those internal changes are made promptly. Once the changes are made and verified, I will send you a confirmation email. Contact me directly via my email address – [email protected] or call the club at 386-445-2327, option 7. You can also stop by the office Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. till 3:00p.m. Have a blessed month. If I haven’t met you yet, feel free to stop by the Administrative Office to introduce yourself.

GREAT GOLF SHOTS

Roger Consolla aced the 157 yard par three 17th hole Saturday March 16th using a 7 wood. Roger’s ace was witnessed by Jan Marsh, Tony Sciuto, and Bob Wolfe.

Jackie Poole eagled the par five 7th hole Sunday March 17th using a 5 wood for her third stroke. Jackie’s eagle was witnessed by Barbara Mott and Pat Smith.

Barbara Mott scored a hole in one on the 92 yard 14th hole Saturday March 30th. Barbara used a 9 iron for her ace. Her shot was witnessed by Melody & Paul Kimmel.

Marion Hessert scored a hole in one at the 77 yard eighth hole during the regular WGA league play Tuesday, March 26th using a 9 iron. Marion’s ace was witnessed by Heidi Fitz-gerald, Sharon Downes, Pat Smith This would make her 2nd (or 3rd, depending upon how you count) hole in one on #8. Back in 2002, while playing a round with her husband, Mari-on hit her tee shot on #8 in the water. Frustrated with the shot and her game, she an-nounced she was “done” and got back in the golf cart. Her husband, Wil, told her to “get out and hit again - but this time keep your head down and follow through”. Wouldn’t you know, it was a perfect shot, so perfect it went in the hole! Two days later Marion was play-ing in the Women’s Golf League when she got to #8 and hit the ball in the hole again!!! She has also had a hole in one on #5 bringing her total Hole in One’s to 3, or 4, depending how you want to count!

FROM THE HANDICAP COMMITTEE BILL BOYER Recent audit results have been disappointing to say the least. On one day, one half of the cards were incorrect. We continue to have some very high quality players posting their score but not submitting the cards. Just a reminder that it is not U.S. G. A. requirement but Grand Haven ( your club ) that expect you to post and deliver you scores. A second area of concern centers around the score you are taking relative to your handicap. If you have a handicap over 20 though 29 you are expected to take a maximum of eight shots. Many of our players are stopping at a seven score. You are hurting yourself and potential play-ing partners if you under handicap yourself. By the way, the eight is on any hole. Dump it in the water on number eight six times is not a five. If you pick up take your maximum not a semi- bad score. Again you don’t have to play til you get eight shots but record your maximum per your handicap ( not you index). Reporting less score than you are required makes nice conver-sation but may limits your partner selection in team play if you can’t support your deflated handicap. Your friends aren’t telling you that they love you but are getting tired of losing due to you. Handicap and stroke max: 0-9 double bogie 10-19 seven 20-29 eight 30-39 nine Above 40 look into lessons with Billy. So lets turn in your cards, put a real score in, note the date played and please put your fellow players last name on the card. I really don’t know Barb- Phil- Skipper or The Man. A true handicap is better than watching you and your friends buy drinks every week.

FROM THE WGA SUZETTE SWEENY

March was another busy month. The Club Championship was a lot of fun and very competitive. Joan Callahan remains our champion and retains the parking spot. This year a Stableford competition was added. Molly Moon is our Stableford champion. Barbara Edwards came in second. Jackie Poole had an Eagle. Very exciting. Congratulations to Marion Hessert on her Hole in One on Number 8 last week. Lot of events scheduled for April. Stableford will be on April 2. Our Women’s Invitational (Member Guest) is coming up. Also charity tour-nament on April 23. If you would like to volunteer to help in these events, please let us know. We miss all the ladies that have not been playing due to injury or illness. Hope to see you playing soon.

FROM THE LGL CAMILLE HINSCH Here we are already April, still wondering where the time goes by so fast, We will be playing at Hammock Beach for the Coastal Niners on April 8th.Thirteen members are going, will let you know how we do next month. This is the last Coastal Niners for this season, but for any of our new members it is a fun time and you get to play other golf courses and meet members from different clubs. Think about signing up when the sheets are put up in the ladies room next season. The dates will be in our directory. Also remember the Char-ity tournament on Tuesday April 23rd,all ladies are welcome. I know this is early but a quick note to put on your calendar October 14th we will host the Coastal Niners at Grand Haven . We will need a lot of hands to do this. Put it on your calendar and when Linda Stitz asks for volunteers please say yes. Wishing all a Happy Easter.

FROM THE MGA MIKE TEBBANO April is a busy time for the MGA, as can be attested to by our 5th Annual President’s Cup Tourna-ment being played on April 17 and 24. Our membership will be divided into teams and play in a com-petitive team event, similar to a Ryder Cup match. Following the match on April 24, the MGA Spring Luncheon will occur and the election of new officers for the 2018-19 golf season.

Each week of the month, the MGA will be offering games for the membership. In fact, all year long, our weekly games provide competition with friendship and camaraderie for all to share. Our annual membership drive will begin in May and all male golfers of the Grand Haven community are encour-aged to join our league. For more details, visit our website at ghmga.com.

We have been quite fortunate to welcome new members in recent weeks. Dave Price, Jim Hester, Gerald Holden, Dan Raimondo, Al Vanjaria, Frank Medolla, Carl Zimmerman, John Fitzgerald, Mike Dunkel, Chuck Powers, Gary Gamble, and Pat Creque, are the newest golfers to take the plunge into of the excitement of the MGA. We welcome them and wish them an exciting experience with our league.

A special MGA shout-out to TJ and the grounds crew for the excellent care and condition of the course, especially after the tremendous work of repairing the bunkers and clearing out of storm de-bris along the fairways. We thank you for your dedication and commitment to our community.

In the words of Luke Skywalker and Ben Hogan, “may the ‘pars’ be with you”
