Food Price Hike in the Global Prospective

The new global food price spiral witnessed during the last decade has many prime movers. These include general global inflation

Rising food prices have driven an estimated 44 million people into poverty in developing countries since last June

Global food prices are rising to dangerous levels and threaten tens of millions of poor people around the world, as per statement of The World Bank Group President

The price hike is already pushing millions of people into poverty, and putting stress on the most helpless, who spend more than half of their income on food.

Prices of essential food items rose by 53.86% in Pakistan as flood caused to damage to agriculture sector and disrupted food supplies during the first quarter i.e. July to September of the fiscal year 2010 by media reports. According to the report of SBP food price hike increased 30% last year in Pakistan.

Role of Government Institutions

In response to the recent unprecedented price hike, the GOP undertook immediate inclusive policy and trade related measures to keep food prices from further expanding and to provide wheat at affordable prices. In addition, the GOP plans to launch various social protection instruments to bail out for poor people from the adverse impacts of price hikes which are following;

1. Maintenance, modernization and expansion of key rural infrastructure spanning water, roads and electricity are in urgent need of policy and institutional reforms.Canal Irrigation system may be developed

2. The growing area of food crops should be increased

3. Accelerating the growth of small and medium farms where there is considerable potential for increasing yield per acre and employment generation
