David was the son of Marion G. and Marvella Brown and was born in Abilene, Texas. He attended high school in Lexington, Kentucky. He earned a B.S. from M.I.T. in computer science prior to working in aerospace computer technologies for NASA. David moved to Washington with Intermetrics and later worked for Boeing Flight Control Systems, where he pursued his passion for airplanes for three decades. David worked on flight navigation systems at Boeing and his grandchildren always asked if we were flying on a Boeing plane and if Grandpa helped with this one. We felt safer knowing that he has written code to fly the planes. He loved the outdoors and was an avid mountaineer and an original member of the climbing group OSAT. David and Teresa enjoyed a lifestyle rich in companionship, travel and outdoor adventure. Together they visited more than 40 countries and shared a love of the world's people and places. They always planned trips and David came home with hundreds of pictures and stories of all the places and people he met. David will be remembered by hisfriends and family as a kind, generous and thoughtful man who possessed a natural curiosity and endless capacity for learning. David loved wry humorand a good laugh. He was humble and peaceful and built strong, devoted bonds with his family and friends. We are saddened by David's abrupt departure but are deeply grateful for the memory of David's bright and uplifting spirit. A celebration of David's life will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 21, 2010, at Solie Funeral Home, 3301 Colby Ave., Everett, WA. Richard was an educated man. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Wyoming University, a Master of Business Administration from St. Mary's University, San Antonio, Texas and a Ph.D from North Texas State University. Richard was an accounting professor at the University of Florida and worked in public accounting as a Certified Public Accountant for the firm of Isham P. Nelson & Co. in Dallas, Texas. In addition to his academic achievements, Richard served as an intelligence officer and was a Captain in the United State Air Force. After his retirement, Richard remained active in current events a maintained an extensive library of literature, history and religion. Hew was well versed on many subjects beyond the scope of his formal education. His mother, Anna May Byars, and his father Richard Charles Byars preceded Richard in death. Michael L. Coleman stood for years as a staunch advocate for Allegheny West, almost up to the day of his death Saturday at Allegheny General Hospital. He was 67.

He was always the go-to guy for comment about anything happening in Allegheny West or having to do with the Allegheny West Civic Council, on which he served many roles over the years.

A longtime resident of Lincoln Street, Mr. Coleman was the founder and owner of Allegheny R&D, a North Shore company that made EMS data collection software.

He was known for his strong sense of fair play and "wicked sense of humor, often very dry," said Gloria Rayman, a member of the civic council's board.She said his strength was "always being able to see both sides of an issue, which made him a good mediator."

"He was so fair about everything and always so positive, right up to the very end. I am going to miss him dearly. He was not only a great friend but he took on the role of mentor in things going on in the community."

Mark Masterson, executive director of the Northside Community Development Fund, said Mr. Coleman was a stabilizing force during times of transitionas a member of the fund's board. He remained during a board upheaval several years ago and supported the fund's efforts to keep the Northside Chronicle in publication after the death of the paper's longtime editor John Lyon.

"He was one of the guys who said, 'We've got to stick with this thing.' "

Mr. Coleman was active in preservation efforts, supporting restorations at two historic churches and in the Allegheny Commons Park.

In a 2007 article about the legacy of the old city of Allegheny -- the current North Side neighborhoods -- Mr. Coleman, who was president of the Allegheny City Society, described the North Side saying, "We're just different over here. When we moved here, we were amazed at how much like a village it is, apart from the rest of the city."

He often went to bat for his little sliver of the village.

With his neighbor John DeSantis, Mr. Coleman challenged the Steelers' organization to take a stronger role against the onslaught of fans parking in Allegheny West during Steelers home games.

He also coordinated the regular neighborhood clean-up and was an at-large member of the Northside Leadership Conference.

He was awarded the Northside Leadership Conference's lifetime achievement award in June.

Calling Mr. Coleman one of the council's founding members, Ms. Rayman said his death "has left a huge hole in the collective heart of Allegheny West."

Mr. Coleman, who had cancer for several years, told Mr. Masterson, "I'm not giving in to this," he said, "and up until the last week, he was still doing things."

Mr. Coleman is survived by his wife, Eleanor, of Allegheny West; his daughter, Jennifer Logue; and one granddaughter.

A private ceremony was held Monday.

An only child, he was born in New Orleans to his late parents, Walter A. and Ethel E. Ficht. He grew up in St. Louis, Mo. where he attended Beaumont High School, he later graduated from M.I.T. In Cambridge, Mass. Walter then worked for Armco Steel in Baltimore, General Electric in Lynn, Mass. and for Precision Castparts Corporation in Portland, from which he retired. FLINK, JAMES M., PHD, resident of Copenhagen, Denmark formerly of Providence, RI passed away on September 29th 2012. He is predeceased by his parents Rose and Ellis Flink. He leaves daughters Sophia Flink and Mathilde Flink and his best friend Agnethe Nordentoft of Copenhagen, his sister Joanne Flink Silver and brother-in-law Robert Silver of Framingham, MA as well as a nephew and four nieces in the US and Denmark. Dr. Flink had a long and distinguished career in academia and industry including professorships at MIT and the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural College in Copenhagen. In his academic and industrial career he contributed to the field of freeze drying and protein biophysics. He was part of a team at pharmaceutical firm NovoNordisk which led to the approval of a new diabetes drug treatment. He received the Knight of the Order of Dannebrog from the Queen of Denmark for special service to the country. In 1978 he received the Samuel Cate Prescott award for research by the Institute of Food Technologists. This award is given to an outstanding research scientist under 35 in the field. At Hope High Jim was a track athlete and received the Wally Sundlun, Jr. award as RI Jewish Athlete of the year 1961 going on to excel at MIT where he held various sprint records. Jim is a member of the RI Jewish Athletic Hall of Fame. A graveside service will be held at Temple Beth El Cemetery, Reservoir Ave., Providence on Thursday, Oct 11th at 1:00 PM. James M. Flink, PhD of Copenhagen, Denmark passed away on September 29, 2012. He was an Associate Professor with the MIT Department of Food Science and Technology for about 10 years. During this time he became an authority on freeze drying technology and shelf life stability of dried foods as documented by his many publications. Much of this work was funded by NASA. In 1970 to 1971 he was a visiting professor at the Technical University of Denmark. In 1977 he moved to Denmark to assume the position of Full Professor with the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural College in Copenhagen. He later joined the pharmaceutical firm of Novo Nordisk. In his academic and industrial career he contributed to the field of freeze drying and protein biophysics. He was part of a team at Novo Nordisk which achieved approval of the important new diabetes drug treatment, Victoza. While visiting professor at the Technical University of Denmark he achieved notoriety and a feature in Newsweek by using freeze drying technology to save priceless books and papers in Greenland which had been subject to water in fighting a fire and were held frozen in hopes that a method to save them could be found. This feat demonstrated his creative and inventive mind. These qualities and his ability to become friends with the students he was advising in their MS or PhD programs and his ability to always help and support them made him a very popular professor.

In 1978 he received the Samuel Prescott award for research by the Institute of Food Technologists.This award is given to an outstanding research scientist under 35 in the field. In Denmark he received the Knight of the Order of Dannebrog from the Queen of Denmark for special service to the country.

James Flink was a star track athlete in high school in Rhode Island and at MIT and continues to hold two sprint records at Tech. He has been an enthusiastic supporter of MIT track throughout his lifetime. His father Ellis M. Flink was a MIT graduate as well.

James Flink leaves behind his Danish family, his two daughters Sophia Nordentoft Flink and Mathilde Nordentoft Flink, and his sister, Joanne Silver in Massachusetts.

Dear all,

Sophia, Mathilde, Joanne, uncle Bob and I want to thank you all for being with us today – a sad day on which we have to say goodbye to James Flink in his Danish context.

We also want to thank you for all the e-mails, sms’es/text messages, phone calls and letters we have received during the last very difficult week. All the kind words have made us very proud of him and underlined what a remarkable, lovely person we all have lost.

I am not going to say much about his out-standing academic merits, but more about the private person, Daddy and my best friend, Jim.

We know that you all are well aware that his passing away came as a shock. We were in the middle of planning his birthday-party, which would have been in this very room, and we had – as a family – many things planned and were really looking forward to it all.

Many times during the recent years Jim expressed: ”Life is good!” – he was a happy guy who had found out that work is not all, he enjoyed life and washappy doing things with us: trips, art exhibitions, concerts, theatre, dining out, seeing friends, keeping in touch with our American side of the family. He became a family man and cared very much for each and one of us: as a brother, as a brother-in- law, as an uncle, as a great-uncle for Izzy and the new Danish baby on the way. And as a father-in-law. Somehow his vision of himself guarding and protecting his girls with a riffle never came into anything – he must have approved of the choice…

One role he played with an extra effort and love during the recent years, was the one of being a son-in-law to my mother, who passed away not many weeks ago. Jim’s patience was endless, his care and love so tender, and he found extraordinary ways of showing her his affection that gave him quite a status of fame in my mothers nursing home. They did not even have vases big enough for the bunches of flowers he gave her.

He was a truly generous man. We – his girls – were spoiled and we knew it and he knew we were and we are grateful. It is important to note that his generosity was not only with money. But with time, interest, concern. That showed in his involvement in voluntary work and in his involvement in his local environment.

In Taarbæk with the sailing club and the people he met. He knew the troubles and dreams of the local green grocer and gave advice to his nephew on the importance of education.In Christianshavn he became the head of board of the building he lived in. He also involved himself with the local archives. He loved living here and being a part of such an old, genuine section of the city.

The girls and I have talked about what was the driving force of his voluntary work. And we think – besides from plainly being a really good guy – it has something to do with his stubbornness. He liked to get things to work. We often heard the line: ”It cannot be right….” and then he set out to find solutions.

Another and really amazing side of him as a ”local guy” is the way he invested energy in getting to know places. He was an amateur historian at a quitehigh level.

He knew the history of Copenhagen better than most people born and raised here.

Jim as Daddy

Sophia’s and Mathilde’s Daddy was the one in the world giving the best, biggest and warmest ”bear-hugs”. When HE said ”everything will be all right, kid”, it felt so reassuring.

He was a living encyclopedia. He always knew the answers no matter what kind of question came up. No question was stupid – No answer was short! In the death announcement we wrote. ”Loved and missed – our great inspiration”. What he has passed on to us, inspired in us is this: the world is fantastic, be curious, explore it, enjoy it!

We have as a family had many discussions: political, cultural, DK vs. US, and more philosophical ones.

These discussions have passed on his views and values to our two daughters. His moral standards were high, his integrity could never be questioned. He was honest, enthusiastic and wise. His impact on us is lasting and we are grateful for it.

He also knew how to let us know that he was proud of us, that we made him happy. I – as the mother – can add: that in effect he was proud of you all the time! In the text he was asked to prepare for the national newspapers for a birthday portrait he put it this way: ”Last, but not the least and as the

John Marion Gallant, 65, died at his home on July 28, 2008 from complications of multiple sclerosis and diabetes. Born in Columbia, SC December 22,1942, John was the son of the late Marion and Ann Tyler Gallant. After graduating from MIT with honors in Electrical Engineering, John earned mastersdegrees in both Electrical Engineering and Business Administration from the University of South Carolina. He spent his entire working life at SCE&G retiring on disability in 1996. John loved theater, music and especially opera. An accomplished musician, he had sung with the Columbia Choral Society and Lyric Theater, now Lyric Opera. His sense of adventure took him rafting with his siblings to the Arctic Ocean; his sense of fun found him in Disneyworld. John is survived by his wife Jessica Kross; daughters, Kimberly Revels (Jim) and Katherine Gallant; siblings, James Gallant and Susan Stubbs (Jim); grandchildren, Christopher Gallant, James Revels and Harrison Revels; nephew, Allen Earles; niece, Lily Esposito; aunt, Mary Robinson and former wife, Judy Steen. HERBERT, THOMAS JAMES, 71, died on November 21, 2013, in an auto accident on the Baikul Highway near Irkutsk, Siberia. He was born November 3, 1942 in Seattle, Washington to Clarence and Elsie Hallam Herbert. He was a graduate of MIT and Johns Hopkins University and a facultymember of the Biology Department at the University of Miami from 1974 until 2012. He was a visiting scientist at the Department of Biophysical Engineering, Osaka University, Japan in 1983, and at the Institute of Astrophysics and Atmospheric Physics, Estonian 1987-1988. Tom's scientific loves were plants, lasers, and computers but felt that as a university professor one of his most important responsibilities was the students whom he truly loved to teach. His love of travel led him to circumnavigate the global by air and land twice and travel throughout six continents. On his journeys he was an artful photographer of the earth and its people. He sought out unique landscapes and cultures such as Japan, Romania, and Russia. His family accompanied him on trips through Europe, Africa, and Asia to reach remote destinations such as Zambia and the Karakoram Highway in Pakistan. He repeatedly hiked the Appalachian Trail, the Sierra Mountains, the Smoky Mountains, and the White Mountains of New England. Other favorites were the mountains of Switzerland, France, Iceland, Norway and, Romania. Tom also loved spending time in the Everglades. He spent his last days as he spent his life doing what he loved. He is survived by his beloved wife Lynn, daughter Janet, son Peter, grandchildren Bet, Kenan, Justin, and William, and his brother Captain William (Bill) Herbert of Ventura, CA. MICHAEL HIRSCH: Cartographic Interests: European mapping of North America pre-1776; American mapping of the United States from 1800-1850; and catalogues issued by map and book dealers pre-1970. Professional Background: MS and BS in EE from MIT. Comments: Before becoming a consultant on wireless technologies, I was the Vice President of Technology for the cellular industry trade association. A chance encounter with Richard Arkway at a father-daughter weekend at Cornell University stimulated my interest in antique maps. I have been collecting since 1978 and haveacquired a substantial collection of maps, atlases, and travel books containing maps. Presently I am selling some of the older maps in my collection to buy American imprints post-1800. I enjoy the interplay of map dealers, auction houses, and serious map collectors which, in reality, is a small, tightly knit, community of less than 500 people worldwide.

In the early days of the Map Society, for a long stretch Mike was treasurer which he ran from his hip pocket in a very laid back fashion. I was the society’s secretary. We were all so excited when the Society membership went over one hundred.

One time we had been working hard on something and we decided to have a working dinner meeting. The Virginia members wanted to meet on the Virginia side so those of us from the other side of the world traipsed over across the river. At that time John Snyder was also a member of the Board. John was a dear, wonderful man who was an expert on world projections. He was also a very devout Quaker. Mike, on the other hand, wasn't. When the dinner came to an end Mike insisted on paying for all of us from the Map Society treasury, something that hadn't really been done before. John needless to say did not approve. Well guess what - Mike did it anyway. So here I am, all these years later, thanking all of you in the Map Society for that dinner on behalf of John and Mike. Mike I'm sure you are grinning at us. Gonna miss you a lot.

We are sad to report that Mike Hirsch passed away on June 13. Ralph Bestock and Mike were partners playing duplicate bridge at the JCC when Mike had a stroke from which he never recovered.

Mike came to MIT from Mt. Vernon along with classmate Steve Dreier. His wide interests led him to take seven or eight courses a semester, enabling him to complete the requirements for his undergraduate Course VI degree in three years and earn Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in five. He also studied in the Harvard Decision and Control program. He lived at Alpha Epsilon Pi, where he was active in intramural athletics and a stalwart at late night bridge.

Mike was particularly adept at understanding the intricacies of evolving technologies and how government regulation could encourage or inhibit application or success of those technologies. He applied that expertise in a varied career in telecommunications, energy, and the environment.

During the Vietnam War, Mike served in the Pentagon as one of Secretary Robert McNamara’s famed “Whiz Kids.” He was actually working at the Pentagon as a civilian when he was drafted, went to basic training, then was detailed back to the Pentagon sitting at the same desk in the same job at about ¼ the pay. Always irreverent, he grew a beard while on vacation, which lasted only briefly after he encountered military discipline.

After the war, he returned to New York, serving as Assistant Administrator for Solid Waste Management in the New York City Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), increasing productivity through the use of new technology in the collection and disposal of refuse. He described learning about the political implications of regulation from watching as city sanitation workers expressed dissatisfaction with one policy change by surrounding City Hall with bumper-to-bumper garbage trucks that kept employees in and the public out until negotiations ensued.

After extensive travel in Asia, he returned to Washington, DC as Director of Policy Analysis in the US EPA, helping develop and defend amendments tothe Clean Air Act.

Mike researched and taught public sector finance and rulemaking as an Associate Professor at Cornell Business School, then managed forty economists and engineers at the NY Public Service Commission in Albany, NY, who testified on behalf of ratepayers on communications and energy rates.

He returned again to the Washington area in 1983 to become Director of Data Services Business Development for GTE Telenet, which had been started by MIT alumni and was acquired by US Sprint. There he managed the connection of the firm’s packet switching network to local telephone companies and represented the firm before the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

He next utilized his communications technology expertise as Vice President of the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA), where he negotiated digital cellular standards and adoption of a signaling network to facilitate nationwide cellular roaming.

Geotek Communications, an Israeli dispatch radio company with a US presence, had Mike run its Washington, DC office, which involved bidding for frequency spectrum in an FCC auction and establishing the firm’s frequency hopping technology as an accepted international standard.

In Ithaca, NY, Mike met his future wife Pamela Rollins, a nurse practitioner, who is now director of occupational health in the Veterans Administration. They met at a weekly poker game hosted by a mutual friend. Both interested in antique maps, they were engaged at a map dealer’s booth at a rare map show.

The Hirsches were blessed with two children: Seth, a computer science student and soccer player, and Sarah, a former gymnast who is a marine biologist in the sea turtle program at the Mote Aquarium in Sarasota, Florida. As they grew up, the Hirsch home in McLean, Virginia became the favored hangout for their teenage friends, full of food and laughter.

Mike pursued a variety of interests, including bridge, chess, racquetball, skiing, tennis, and antique map collecting. In chess, his most memorable accomplishment was beating future world champion Bobby Fischer when both were preteens. He was an avid member of the Washington Map Society,a driving force in the revitalization of the MIT Enterprise Forum in Washington, and head of his neighborhood dog park.

Mike was a student of human nature, who mostly listened and swapped stories but shied away from judgmental advice. Friends and classmates remember his irreverent wit, mischievous grin, and rollicking infectious laughter.

FALMOUTH - John E. "Ted" Huguenin, 70, died suddenly on Saturday September 15, 2012 at his home in Falmouth, MA. He was born Jean Edouard Huguenin-Virchaux on May 20, 1942 in Manhattan, New York, the only child of Jean Jacques Huguenin and G. Marcelle Huguenin (Boudy). He was raised on Staten Island, NY, where he attended Staten Island Academy and in eighth grade began his lifelong friendship with his future wife, Suzanne. He received a B.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT in 1964, followed by an M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from USC, a second M.S. inOcean Engineering from MIT, and an Eng.D. in Ocean Engineering from MIT. From 1964 through 1968, he served in Space Systems Division of the USAF in Los Angeles, CA. In 1970, his marine pursuits brought him to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, followed by UMASS Seagrant, and hisown consulting business, Woods Hole Engineering Associates. In 1978, Ted decided to share his love of engineering and marine science with the next generation, and joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, where he served as a dedicated professor for 34 years. Alongside his busy career, Ted showed his love for family through his participation in Boy Scout Troop 38, leadership of BSA Explorer Post 40, and lighting assistance during Falmouth Figure Skating Club Ice Shows. In the community, Ted was active as a board member of the Falmouth Historical Society and as a board member of the Monument Beach Sportsman's Club. His love for fraternal organizations started at the Sigma Tau chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon at MIT, and continued through his active participation in Freemasonry as a membership chair and grand master of Marine Lodge A.F. & A.M. and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Ted will be remembered for his deep intellectual curiosity, his love and loyalty towards friends and family, and his extreme generosity of spirit. His family is gladdened that he was able to live out his days in character. He is survived by his best friend and wife of 47 years, S. Suzanne Huguenin (Smith), their labrador retriever Annie, son J. Sanders Huguenin, daughter-in-law Margaret Huguenin, daughter Evelene Huguenin Hawley, son-in-law Stephen Hawley, daughter S. Carolene Huguenin, son-in-law I. Claude Denton, mother-in-law Sara Walker Smith, and six grandchildren, Jack, Cecile, Malcolm, Gabe, Alice, and Stuart. NoticeJames J. Kotanchik was born in Newport News, Virginia, first son of Joseph N. Kotanchik and Mary Habura Kotanchik of Shamokin, Pennsylvania. He left for MIT when his parents moved from Newport News to Houston, Texas to work on the Apollo Man on the Moon project. He stayed in the Boston area after his degrees in Aeronautics and Astronomics and made a career in engineering and computer science. Appropriately, he died on the date of the landing of the last flight of the space program. He was husband of Judith Anthony Kotanchik, father of Lara Kotanchik of Acton, Meredith Kotanchik Dittmar and her husband Randy and grandsons Foster Cohen and Wesley Shaw Dittmar of Portland, Oregon; and to Amy Kotanchik Lienert and her husband Peter and granddaughter Ladina of Meien UR, Switzerland. He was brother of Joseph N. Kotanchik and his wife Susie of Kingwood, Texas and uncle to Joseph A. Kotanchik of Arlington, Virginia. His list of achievements and awards were many, but the most special to him involved his love of philately (stamp collecting) where he judged, exhibited, published and questioned its norms. His book in the area of his specialty, Post Office Seals of the United States and Possessions, was a source of great personal pride. He was chairman of the Board of Assessors in Acton for many years, he was faithful to his church. His bond to MIT and his fraternity brothers at Lambda Chi Alpha was tight and true to the end. Always one to enjoy inspired debate, Jim had a fiery spirit. His intense love for animals was eclipsed only by his devotion to his wife and daughters. He was, in all that he was, true to himself, true to his family, and true to his friends. He has met the measure of a good man and in his family's eyes, has exceeded it. A wake was held recently at Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street in Concord., followed by a Memorial Mass said in his honor at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, 89 Arlington Street in Acton. Stephen F. Kraysler, age 70, passed away in mid-December 2012 in Chokoloskee where he and his wife Edie enjoyed their winter home. Steve was a wellknown for his friendly demeanor and his loveof going out on his flats boat and fly fishing.

Vince Grillo shared a story about his neighbor and friend whom he taught to fly fish in 1999. “For someone who had never fly fished, Steve made good progress …We worked and worked and after the first day, Steve was not discouraged…Steve's enthusiasm was responsible for rapid improvement...The weather was gradually improving each day, with day three the best by far…He learned how easily Snook spook, and of the difficulties to catch a large one in the clear, shallow water….Now ready and more determined, he cast and a Snook hit the fly. This time Steve set the hook, but in all the excitement he couldn't organize his body parts to strip the line. His arms and hands were flailing, the fly line was dancing, his heart was pounding, and the boat was rocking. TheSnook took advantage of the mayhem and jumped free of the hook….Steve brought the next Snook that hit his Lefty's Deceiver to the boat... It was an enormous thrill for Steve, and I happily shared that joy with him…. After forty-five minutes on the same shore, he landed eight Snook and lost three others. … It's wondrous to watch a full grown man halfway through life turn into a wide-eyed kid again. Why grow up?”

Personally and professionally, Steve was very bright and a successful businessman, joining Mann Conroy Eisenberg & Associates as a principal member in October 2002. Steve started his actuarial career at John Hancock in 1964 where he advanced to President and CEO. Beginning in 1987 Steve worked at Wolper, Ross & Co., Ltd., joined Skandia Life Reassurance Company in late 1988 as executive VP, chief actuary and board member. He also served as senior VP of ING Re and the head of Domestic and International Structured Reinsurance.

Steve graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1964 and from the Executive Program of Stanford Business School in 1985.

Steve is survived by his wife Edith and daughters Kathryn and Coreen of Hull, MA.

Judah was born in New York, USA in 1942, the son of Aaron and Sarah.

Early on in his childhood, he showed exceptional perseverance and drive, realizing any goal.

He steered himself to the world of science through great schools, including the Bronx High School of Science and MIT.

Judah loved life and had many hobbies, including classical music, which he loved to hear, the trombone, Piper plane flight and sailing sailboats.

Judaism of Judea and being observant greatly influenced his worldview, Judah was a man of truth and morals.

He found himself joining the "Mitt" human rights organizations and fought for correcting injustice and justice.

Being an ardent Zionist, he applied for a post doc at the Faculty of Physics at the Technion, and in 1969 when it became possible did not hesitate.

He and his wife Francine came to Israel.

He joined the Faculty of Physics, and with his expertise he and his team were able tolower temperatures in the country, and achieve important research.

Two sons were born, Aaron and Michael. Despite long hours spent in the lab, his family felt his love. Judah loved the country and enjoyed traveling there, he never missed an opportunity to take the family by sailboat to Sinai, Mount Hermon and Carmel. So despite his departure so young, we are all so full of experiences and memories.

Judah was an example of how you can combine the science of faith, family, Adaology and career.

He died in 1981, after three years of stubborn fighting and steadfastness, from cancer. He was 39.

He did not live to see his children marry in his life, he did not live to see his grandchildren Gilad, Yair, Carmel, Jordan, Rotem, and two are called his name Judah, laughing and full of life. He did not even live to finish his studies, but he lived a full life and left a mark on everyone around.

Mr. Low had been a research engineer for Santa Fe Railway since 1979.

He was born Nov. 3, 1942, in New York, the son of Emery Morton and Lois E. Foxen Low Sr.

Mr. Low was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he sang in the choir. He also played a trumpet and he was a stamp collector.

He married Donna Diane Berninger on Nov. 1, 1975, in Upper Darvy, Pa. She survives.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Penwell-Gabel Midtown Chapel. Cremation will follow the services.

LYSAGHT, MICHAEL LYSAGHT, MICHAEL, 67, died peacefully at home in East Greenwich on October 24 after a long illness. Born in New Rochelle, New York, Michael was the son of the late Helen and Vincent Lysaght. He graduated from Georgetown (AB) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology(BS, MS) and received his PhD from the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. After a successful career in industry pursuing medical research, Professor Lysaght joined the faculty of Brown University as a Professor of Molecular Pharmacology, Physiology, & Biotechnology where for almost 15 years he taught and continued his research. He created the Rhode Island Center for Cellular Medicine to support the formation of local biotechnology spinoffs and startups based upon university technologies. He was the Founder and Director Emeritus of Brown University's Center for Biomedical Engineering and received the Hazeltine Citation from the Class of 2003 and the Le Duc award for teaching excellence in Life Science. He is survived by the love of his life, Carmen and his brother, Vincent (Mary Ann) Lysaght and sister, Mary Helen (Larry) Cathles. He will be deeply missedby his nieces and nephews and great nephew and niece. Michael had a wonderful zest for life and would want us to remember his favorite saying, 'Carpe Diem'. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11am in Manning Chapel, Brown University. Visiting hours will be Tuesday from 4:00-7:00 pm at Monahan, Drabble, & Sherman Funeral Home, 230 Waterman St. at Wayland Square, Providence. Burial will be private. He worked on the Apollo project and helped design the space suits for the astronauts. In his free time, Joseph enjoyed horticulture, historical and genealogical research, and watching the Boston Celtics. David W. Morrison 1942 - 2011 RICHMOND - David W. Morrison, 68, of View Drive, passed away suddenly Thursday. Born June 23, 1942, in Pittsfield,son of Dr. David W. and Ruth Faunce Morrison, he was a 1960 graduate of Pittsfield High School, received a degree in metallurgy from MIT in 1964, and a master's degree in civil engineering from UMASS in 1968. He began his career working for General Electric, and then owned and operated Berkshire County Tire Company for 16 years. He had been the Richmond Town Clerk since 2006. David was very active in the Richmond community and at the First United Methodist Church in Pittsfield. He was a volunteer firefighter for 35 years, and most recently had served as chief of the Richmond Fire Department. He enjoyed his cars and his dogs and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed anything. He leaves his wife, the former Cynthia Statkun, whom he married on Aug. 30, 1970, in Springfield; his two beloved daughters, Meaghan Rudolph and her husband, Morgan, of Melrose and Margaux Morrison and her longtime boyfriend, Bryan Crabtree, of South Boston; his dog, Hildie, and his three "grandbassets." MEMORIAL NOTICE:S A memorial service to celebrate the life of David W. Morrison will be held Saturday, Jan. 15, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church at 55 Fenn Street in Pittsfield. Poe, Dr. Martin POE Dr. Martin Poe, research biophysicist at Merck Dr. Martin Poe of Scotch Plains died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008. A memorial service will be held at the Fanwood Presbyterian Church, 74 Martine Ave., Fanwood, on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m. Interment is private. Dr. Poe was born in St. Louis, Mo., and was raised in Rock Rapids, Iowa. Following a postdoctoral position at DuPont in Wilmington, Del., he spent most of his career as a senior research biophysicist with Merck & Co. in Rahway. He then worked for the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Va., evaluating grant requests. While at Merck, he co-authored a patent for compounds useful in the treatment of bacterial infections and cancerous tumors. Dr. Poe received his bachelor of science from MIT, where he won the Freshman Chemistry Prize and was a member of the varsity crew team that won the Compton Cup. He was awarded his doctorate in biophysics by the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Poe belonged to numerous professional organizations, including the Biophysical Society, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the American Chemical Society. He was also a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, for whom he regularly judged high school science fairs. He was an active member of the Fanwood Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder and former trustee. He belonged to the U.S. Golf Association and won the Spring Senior KickoffClassic golf tournament at Apple Mountain Golf Club in June of this year. The following day, he competed for MIT in the Alumni Masters Division of the International Regatta Association Crew Races in Mount Laurel. Dr. Poe is survived by his wife, Joan Peterson Poe; his daughter and son-in-law, Alison Poe and Timothy Lyons of Morristown; his parents, Martin and Rosemary Poe of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; his brother and sister-in-law, David and SallyPoe of Gallup, N.M., and numerous nieces and nephews. Radwin June 11, 1943 - Nov. 13, 2008 Mark Stephen Radwin, beloved son, husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on Thursday, November 13, three weeks after being diagnosed with colon cancer. He died at home in Los Altos, surrounded by his family and love. He is survived by his parents Arthur and Sylvia, his brother Ronald, his wife of 40 years Karen, his sons David and Michael, his daughters-in-law Kara Vuicich and Ariella Radwin, and grandchildren Ruth, Noam, Ori, and Yael. Mark was born in New York, NY in 1943 to Arthur and Sylvia Radwin. As a child he showed an exceptional aptitude and enthusiasm for science and engineering, including winning a prestigious Westinghouse Science Talent Search competition. After being admitted to his dream school, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he personally convinced the admissions office to award him enough financial aid so that he could afford to attend. At MIT he pledged Alpha Epsilon Pi, managed the campus humor magazine Voodoo, and earned a bachelor's and master's degree in electrical engineering. In 1966, after completing additional coursework toward a Ph.D. in management, he left Boston to take a position at Lockheed's Palo Alto research lab. In 1967 Mark joined DIALOG, one of the world's first commercial search engines. Ten years later he became the Global Operations Manager and Chief Scientist at Tymnet, and later served as Director of Business Development at GTE Telenet. In 1992 he went to work at NASA's Ames Research Center, from which he retired five years ago. Mark will be remembered first and foremost for his love for his family. He was always generous with family and strangers alike, and would bend over backwards to help someone in need. His intelligence, diligence, and foresight made him a visionary in his field. Reed, Sr. Mr. Reed was a member of PhiBeta Kappa and graduated with honors from MIT in 1964 with a Master's Degree inAerospace Engineering. For several years he worked for Hughes Aircraft in California,returning to the Eastern Shore in 1966 where he began his 35 year career with Thiokol inElkton.Don's first project at Thiokol was as a solid rocket engineering analyst of gas dynamics,structural and thermal behaviors, and trajectories, where he developed a series ofcomputer based performance programs that are still used today. He also authored manytechnical papers and reports, one paper winning a national AIAA a w d .At Thiokol, Don became Director of Engineering and led a multi-discipline team ofrocket scientists responsible for conceiving rocket motors and controllable gas generatorsfor specific requirements, developing and fabricating the concepts, and qualifying themby test. He had an uncanny ability to coordinate this team based on his experience andintellect to meet this objective. The effort Don and his co-workers put forth resulted indesigns for commercial and defense related applicztions that continue to lead the industry,in the 2 1" century. He contributed significantly to the ThiokoVElkton motors used onmissions to the moon, Venus, Mars, and the only four spacecraft that our civilization hassent beyond the planets of our solar system. Don retired in 2001.He was a member of the Maryland & Delaware Association of Professional Engineersand the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Dr. Michael Stulbarg of Mill Valley, a nationally recognized specialist in lung disease and a longtime faculty member at UCSF, died April 18 of liver failure resulting from a chronic bone-marrow disorder.

He was 61.

Dr. Stulbarg was a full professor of clinical medicine at UCSF and was widely acknowledged as one of the country's leading experts on cystic fibrosis and other chronic lung diseases.

He devoted much of his career to relieving such symptoms as shortness of breath and coughing, and he was one of the first to advocate effective palliative care in terminal lung disease, including the use of sometimes controversial opiate medications.

He was an adamant critic of smoking who adorned his car with a custom license plate bearing the simple health message: ""NO CIGS.""

His UCSF colleagues frequently relied upon him for guidance in the diagnosis and treatment of the most difficult cases.

""Michael was the best of the best,"" said Dr. Lee Goldman, chair of the department of medicine at UCSF. ""He was the doctor's doctor, a teacher's teacher. He was a person we all went to.""

Dr. Stulbarg grew up in Cincinnati, where his father, a lawyer, struck it rich in the ice-cream business and was able to retire at age 42.

The son earned a humanities degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1964. That was followed in 1969 with his medical degree from Harvard University.

After his residency and a fellowship in pulmonary disease at UC San Diego, Dr. Stulbarg joined the UCSF faculty in 1976.

He rose to the top positions in his specialty, serving as chief of the UCSF clinical pulmonary service and of the adult cystic fibrosis program.

He became chief of the UCSF chest faculty practice and also was associate director of a sleep-disorders center.

An endowed chair in pulmonary medicine was established in his honor earlier this year.

Besides his clinical practice, Dr. Stulbarg was highly regarded as a teacher in the UCSF School of Medicine.

""He lectured on lung disease and symptom management, and his lectures were always alive with patient examples, real cases, cases he managed,"" recalled Susan Janson, a professor in the UCSF schools of nursing and medicine. ""It was so easy to listen to him talk.""

Dr. Stulbarg also was known for his passionate interests in bridge, fine wine, golf, tennis and skiing. He was fluent in both Spanish and French.

His death prompted an outpouring of testimonials at www.supportcircle.com. Patients praised his compassion and expertise, even while some spoke ofa ""cranky nature"" and ""sometimes bristling quickness and candor.""

Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Sheila-Merle Johnson of Mill Valley; a son, Andrew Stulbarg of Redwood City; a daughter, Katherine Hirsch of the Chicago area; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service was held April 22 at UCSF. A private celebration of his life is being planned for mid-June.

Mr. Warren was born in Meadville,Pa., on May 31, 1942, a son of Everett M. Warren and Ila Mae (McFadden) Warren. He graduated from Meadville High School and later from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. Mr. Warren, a research engineer at MIT and past member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, had resided in Watertown since 1969. He died in Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006, after ashort illness with gallbladder cancer. He leaves his wife of 41 years, Patricia (Moise) Warren; two sons, Daniel J. Warren of Laconia, N.H., and Everett A. Warren and his wife, Deborah (Csuvay) Warren, of Lehighton, Pa.; his mother, Ila Mae Warren of Hickory, N.C.; a brother, David L. Warren and his wife, Emiko Warren, of Hickory, N.C.; and three grandchildren, E. Justin Warren, Rachel L. Warren and Brandon P. Warren. URBANA û William D. Watson died at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana on Oct. 12, 2009, after suffering a heart arrhythmia on the previous Sunday. There will be a visitation on Friday, Oct. 16, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Owens Funeral Home, 101 N. Elm St., Champaign. The funeral service will begin at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana. Bill was born on Jan. 12, 1942, at Memphis, Tenn., but spent his formative years in Camden, a small town in rural Alabama. He survived the cold of Boston to earn a B.S. degree in 1964 and a Ph.D. in 1968 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He held a joint appointment in the faculties of Physics and of Astronomy at the University of Illinois beginning in 1972. Early in his career, he pioneered the effort to understand how molecules could form in the harsh environment of interstellar space. His work on ion-molecule chemistry led the way in this new area of astrophysics. Today, radio astronomers routinely use his work in studying how new stars are formed in our Milky Way galaxy and beyond, how galaxies evolve, and perhaps even how life originated. Later in his career, Bill became the world leader in understanding the physics of the emission and polarization of maser emission and in how astronomical observations of masers could be usedto probe how new stars are born and how black holes evolve. Bill delighted in pushing his colleagues to think outside the box on fundamental questions by his insightful observations. He was respected both as a scholar and as a gentleman. After his retirement, he became an avid tennis player. He was a kind and compassionate man who cared deeply for his family and the well-being of others. He leaves behind his loving wife Paula; two fine daughters Lucia Watson of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Liza Watson Lehrer of Chicago; and a sister, Jane Phipps of Birmingham and Camden, Ala. Memorial contributions can be made to the Department of Physics and the Atkins Tennis Center at the University of Illinois.

Jerome Ira "Jerry" Weiner passed away Sunday, April 22, 2012, during his 69th year. Service: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the sanctuary of Beth-El Congregation, 4900 Briarhaven Road, with Rabbi Ralph Mecklenburger officiating. Following committal prayers, he will be laid to rest in the Beth-El Section of Greenwood Memorial Park. Shiva and minyan services will be held on Wednesday at the Weiner residence, beginning at 6 p.m. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, consideration of contributions to the Jewish Education Agency, Beth-El Congregation or to the Lions Club, in Jerry's memory, is suggested. Born in Patterson, N.J., on Feb. 21, 1943, Jerry was the son of Jess and Dorothea Slavin Weiner. He and his wife, Sylvia, made their homein Fort Worth for 45 years, moving here in 1966 to work at General Dynamics. After leaving GD, Jerry became a partner in B&H Amusement Rides, a manufacturing company. He later started an aerospace consulting firm, which then branched off into three travel agencies to cover the "slow" season. The tail wagged the dog, and Jerry split off the consulting firm with his partner, Don Dudas, off he and Sylvia went a-traveling and never stopped. Jerry was a member of Beth-El Congregation and past president of the Beth-El Brotherhood. He also served as president of the Dan Danciger Jewish Community Center and the South Side Lions Club, where he served as chairman of "Sight Conservation," arranging for free eyeglasses for children, and chaired the club's children's Christmas parties. He was a member of the Harvard Business School Club and the Educational Advisory Board of MIT, where he interviewed perspective students. Throughout the years, Jerry helped many friends, and quite a few strangers, through tough times quietly and without fanfare. Survivors: In addition to his wife, Sylvia, Jerry is survived by his daughters, Melissa Weiner and Jennifer Weiner Rosser and her husband, Rob; grandchildren, Ethan and triplets, Alexander, Benjamin and Cameron Rosser; brother, Robert Weiner and his wife, Pat, of Accokeek, Md.; and several cousins.

Allen Henry Wirzburger, (Commander USN Ret.), 70, of Medford, NJ, passed away Monday, October 22, 2012. Born in Plymouth, MA, he graduated from Plymouth High School, and received his bachelor's degree from MIT. He then received his Masters Degrees from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. Allen retired from a naval engineering career during which he served on various ships, mostly aircraft carriers in engineering control rooms. He also supervised carrier overhauls in shipyards. After retirement, he was a consultant to the Navy on many of the same class ships on which he had previously served, supervising and writing manuals for repair work on naval vessels.

Son of the late Henry P. and Lucy (nee Stefani) Wirzburger; he is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Mary Elena (nee Guidoboni) Wirzburger; his children and their spouses, Thomas Wirzburger (Kellyanne), Heidi Curtis (David), John Wirzburger (Melissa), Joseph Wirzburger (Erin), and Elena Robinson (Jessi); six grandchildren, Nicole and Brandon Wirzburger, Katherine, Justin and Tyler Curtis, and Evan Wirzburger; his brother and sister-in-law, Stephen and Susan Wirzburger; and one nephew, Michael Wirzburger.

A service for Dr. Ralph A. Zimmerman, Ph.D., 65, of Boonton Township will be at 4 p.m. Sunday in the Mackey Funeral Home, 107 Essex Ave., Boonton. Dr. Zimmerman, who died Sunday at home, was a research chemist for the Passaic River Coalition before retiring in 2003. He also worked for the League of Women Voters. He earned an undergraduate degree in 1964 and a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry in 1967, both from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was a fencer and New England champion in his senior year. A bomber crew chief in the Air Force during peacetime, Dr. Zimmermans plane was part of the U-2 surveillance project, flying the perimeter of the Soviet Union. Although he flew during peacetime, his plane was damaged by Soviet fire and his service earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross. Dr. Zimmerman was president of the NewEngland Division of the Amateur Fencers League of America. He won a national Silver Medal as a member of the New York Athletic Club Fencing team. He was also an internationally-ranked fencing official who refereed the Olympics and World Champion bouts. He also refereed Gold Medal boutsat the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Dr. Zimmerman served two four-year terms as vice president of the U.S. Fencing Association and worked for its Fencing Officials Commission. He was also chairman of a USFA task force. He also belonged to the South Jersey Theater Organ Society. Born in Philadelphia, he lived in Vineland before moving to Boonton Township. Surviving are his wife, Nancy a daughter, Mary Daniels, and brothers, Donald and David."
