A WORD FROM THE DIRECTORSMARTINA MWANZA & DANIEL MWALE
This report reflects on the SOTAMBE Film Festival 2017 and its major activities: treeplanting, three days outdoor screenings, art workshop for children, festival review // pressconference, movie screenings and panel discussions, film entrepreneurship conference andthe VIP discussion for upcoming and established filmmakers and media houses.
We wish to acknowledge the presence and support of the following guests of honour: TheMinister of Information and Broadcasting Honourable Mulenga Kampamba and thePermanent Secretary of the Copperbelt Province Mr. Elias Kamanga.
It is pleasing to note that the main sponsor for this festival was MultiChoice Zambiaand Flava FM was the official media partner. Other sponsors included Mopani CopperMines, Vodafone, Eskayarts, Honourable Pavyuma Kalobo (MP Wusakile), YAR FM, KitweLittle Theatre and Stonecites. Such support from corporate houses is greatly appreciatedand we look forward more partnerships.
SOTAMBE DFAF set itself apart from the other years as submissions were predominantlylocal. We received over 30 submissions of feature films, short films and documentaries. Abig thank you to the special guests Messrs Changa Kalumba and Musola Cathrine Kaseketi,renown filmmakers.

ABOUT THE SOTAMBE DOCUMENTARY FILM AND ARTS ORGANISATION
SOTAMBE Documentary Film and Arts Festival (SOTAMBE DFAF) is acompany limited by guarantee that aims to educate and raise awarenessof social issues through film and arts. It serves as a platform for: Learning institutions that want to use documentaries, arts and panel
discussions as a new and advanced method of learning. Local filmmakers and artists to showcase their projects, share ideas
and inspire others. Capacity building for the filmmaking industry through filmmaking
workshops.
Vision: SOTAMBE Documentary Film and Arts vision is todeliver a world class Film and Arts Festival by 2020!Mission: Our mission is to raise awareness on social issues in societythrough documentaries and arts in general. This will be achieved byholding an annual SOTAMBE Film and Arts Festival every September.Objectives: The objectives of SOTAMBE Documentary Film and ArtsOrganization are as follows: Serve as an educational platform for learning institutions and
community members. Serve as a platform for local filmmakers to showcase their projects. Provide skills training in film production. Support the filmmaking and arts industry in Zambia.

ART WORKSHOP FOR CHILDREN2 SEPTEMBER 2017, CHIMWEMWE KITWE
Thirty-eight children from the Chimwemwe communityattended the art workshop during which they created theirown art work entitled Future Belongs to .
Parents that joined this workshop made their own artwork aswell in order to appreciate the importance of art as it wasemphasized to them by the art teacher, Mrs. Teresa Garrido.

OUTDOOR SCREENINGS - DAY 114 SEPTEMBER 2017, MUKUBA MALL
For the first time the SOTAMBE Documentary Film andArts Festival organised an outdoor screening in orderto invite the public to its fourth edition of the FilmFestival at the Kitwe Little Theatre.
The planned activities included screening of anepisode of the TV series called . Musicalperformances by Kashman and Fantom accompaniedthe screenings.
SOTAMBE DFAF was pleased to host the Kitwe DistrictCommissioner Mr. Binwell Mpundu who found theevent very exciting.

OUTDOOR SCREENINGS - DAY 215 SEPTEMBER, MUKUBA MALL
On the second day, an episode of the TV series calledDorika was screened. The cast and crew of the series
were invited to the stage to share their experienceswith the project. It was very enlightening evening.
The music performance was done by Krummy of theKanselele fame and the Chingola Musical group
Ashanti Warriors.
Audience also enjoyed latino dances performed by theSuspended Licence.

OUTDOOR SCREENINGS - DAY 316 SEPTEMBER, MUKUBA MALL
Despite the initial technical challenges that were resolvedwith the assistance of SOTAMBE technical team, Mufaya
the SOTAMBE Best Feature Film of 2016 was screened.
The excitement grew with the acrobatic performance ofthe Mufaya poem done by Lusaka crew and the presenceof the lead actor of the movie, Mr. Bizwell Mudenda.
The audience is looking forward to more outdoorscreenings as most of them experienced it for the firsttime.

PRESS CONFERENCE19 SEPTEMBER, KITWE LITTLE THEATRE
Media houses were invited to attend aFestival Press Review // Pressconference where SOTAMBE DFAFDirectors introduced theactivities and objectives.
The main sponsors were given aplatform to communicate theirpartnership between themselves andthe film festival.
SOTAMBE DFAF is eternally grateful fortheir support and strong partnerships.Media houses in attendance includedthe following: Flava FM, YAR FM, ZNBCTV and Radio, ZANIS, Times of Zambiaand Daily Mail.

TREE PLANTING26 SEPTEMBER, MPELEMBE SECONDARY SCHOOL
Since the environment is one of the critical aspects of our future, SOTAMBE DFAF decided to be practical andundertook a tree planting exercise. One hundred trees were planted at Mpelembe Secondary School with thetarget to plant 500 trees.
The ongoing plan is to involve more schools, colleges and universities in the tree planting exercise on theircampuses. This will expand the green areas in the city of Kitwe and teach students the value of tree planting.

ART EXHIBITION26 30 SEPTEMBER 2017, KITWE LITTLE THEATRE
Apart from the documentary and movies screenings that are coreto the festival, SOTAMBE DFAF promotes different kinds of arts.
Therefore, art exhibition is an important component of the festival.With the support of the Visual Arts Council of Zambia led by DavisSichinsambwe, over 50 art pieces (mixture of seed mosaics andpaintings) were displayed during the festival period.

OFFICIAL OPENING CEREMONY26 SEPTEMBER, KITWE LITTLE THEATRE
Opening ceremony was graced by the Guest of Honourthe Permanent Secretary Copperbelt Province Mr. EliasKamanga. Other guests included the Kitwe DistrictCommissioner Mr. Binwell Mpundu, Brand ManagerMopani Copper Mines Mr. Richard Dolamore, PR ManagerMultiChoice Zambia Mr. Mwiika Malindima and the CzechAmbassador Mr. Radek Rubes.
It was an exciting moment to remember with plenty ofentertainment. NOVA sang the SOTAMBE DFAF Officialsong 2017 entitled Future Belongs to . Herperformance was followed by Krummy, Empire 408,Black Pith Poetry slots and the dancing groupSuspended Licence.

Changa graduated with an Arts Degree in FilmAdministration from Allenby Academy in SouthAfrica. Produced and directed andproduced Kabanana . Co-created forTV2 and created for Muvi TV. Producedover ten movies on DVD and he is also known as apublisher and distributor of Zambian movies.

MusolaCathrineKaseketi
Musola graduated from the Newtown Film and TelevisionSchool in South Africa. She further studied Human Rightsand Cinema in Italy and Human Rights and Advocacy atthe Columbia University. Her greatest achievement andpride is her contribution to the development of theZambian film industry especially through training ofmany now, successful filmmakers in the country.
SCREENINGS AND PANEL DISCUSSIONS27 29 SEPTEMBER, KITWE LITTLE THEATRE
SOTAMBE DFAF is an educational platform allowing students to gain and deepen their knowledge on selectedtopics. The discussions with the producers were fruitful and inspired many students from the following collegesKitwe College of Education, Mufulira College of Education, Mpelembe Secondary School, Helen KaundaSecondary School and ZIBSIP.

FILM ENTREPRENEURSHIP CONFERENCE
29 SEPTEMBER, NKANA GOLF CLUB
SOTAMBE DFAF emphasises local content. With the digital migration, new TV licencing and introductionof international channels such as Zambezi Magic and ZED One, there is a need to empower localfilmmakers and provide them with necessary skills in order for them to produce quality content.Therefore, SOTAMBE DFAF also provides skills training workshops in filmmaking for both, upcoming andseasoned filmmakers.
SOTAMBE DFAF 2017 was special because of the Film Entrepreneurship Conference entitled ofFilmmaking in . There were more than 60 attendees from different production houses somecoming from faraway places such as Livingstone, Solwezi and Lusaka. Main speakers of the conferencewere Mr. Justin Kangwa, a Managing Consultant, and the special guests Madame MusolaCathrine Kaseketi and Mr. Changa Kalumba.

VIP DISCUSSIONGROWTH OF FILMMAKING INDUSTRY IN ZAMBIA
29 SEPTEMBER, NKANA GOLF CLUB
The main objective of the VIP discussion was to create harmony
and unity among the filmmakers to move in the same direction
responding to the expectations of the multi-media giants, and
therefore boosting the filmmaking industry in Zambia.
The panellists included the following; District Commissioner ofKitwe, National Arts Council Director, PR Manager of MultiChoiceZambia and representatives from the Independent BroadcastingAssociation (IBA).
The interaction between film producers, government and privatemedia houses was beneficial to all the stakeholders as manyimportant issues were raised.
The conference and VIP discussion was hosted at the Nkana GolfClub and it was sponsored by Mopani Copper Mines.

DRAMA PLAYS29 SEPTEMBER, KITWE LITTLE THEATRE
Zambia writtenand directed by Light Musonda.Light play was aboutmanaging the environment. Agroup of vigilantes of TwachulaCompound hires a witch finder toflash out witches and wizardsresponsible for concurrent illnessesand deaths in the compound.Play was directed to the primaryand secondary school pupils.
Ama written anddirected by Kanembwa Mukoma,produced by Moddy Muponisi.The play looks at social status insociety and impact ondaily lives.

Just like the movies, theatre equally plays a critical role inbringing up a social change, and it is therefore an importantcomponent of the additional programme.
Two drama plays were staged during SOTAMBE DFAF 2017as follows:
AWARDS NIGHT30 SEPTEMBER, KITWE LITTLE THEATRE
The red carpet awards night was graced by the Minister of Informationand Broadcasting Honourable Mulenga Kampamba. Other guestsincluded the Kitwe District Commissioner Mr. Binwell Mpundu, NationalArts Council Director Mr. Adrien Chipindi, Acting Managing DirectorMultiChoice Zambia Mrs. Ngoza Kasunga Matakala, CEO Mopani CopperMines Plc. Mr. Johan Jansen, the PR Manager MultiChoice Zambia Mr.Mwiika Malindima and the representatives from the IndependentBroadcasting Association (IBA).
The response from filmmakers and the general public was overwhelming.Vincent Kapembwa took us through the evening with elegance. Winnerswere announced by Bizwell Mudenda (ZAFTA Best Actor winner of2016), Changa Kalumba, Musola Cathrine Kaseketi, Acting ManagingDirector MultiChoice Zambia Mrs. Ngoza Kasunga Matakala andSOTAMBE DFAF Directors, Martina Mwanza and Daniel Mwale. Prizeswere handed over by the Minister of Information and BroadcastingHonourable Mulenga Kampamba.
The musical performances by Krummy and MAG 44 were exceptional.The SOTAMBE sketch performed on stage by Kabwita Kusaloka and thecrew depicted the challenges faced by local filmmakers. The evening wasmonumental.

SOTAMBE DFAF 2018 - CELEBRATING A ZAMBIAN FILMMAKER

Kitwe Little Theatre
The theme is in keeping with and celebratesthe development taking place in the ZambianFilm Industry. The Government approved theFilm Policy in 2017 and is working onestablishing film schools. The Government is infull swing implementing the digital migrationprocess from an analogue platform in order toincrease broadcasting capacity.
Both private and national media houses willdemand more and quality local content whichwill increase opportunities for the local filmproduction houses and the consequentincrease in employment. Zambian filmmakerstherefore need to be prepared to meet theseopportunities.
