Prevenient Grace—Nazarene Manual
We believe that the human race’s creation in Godlikeness included ability
to choose between right and wrong, and that thus human beings were made morally responsible; that through the fall of Adam they became depraved so that they cannot now turn and prepare
themselves by their own natural strength and works to faith and calling
upon God.
Prevenient Grace—Nazarene Manual
But we also believe that the grace of God through Jesus Christ is freely
bestowed upon all people, enabling all who will to turn from sin to
righteousness, believe on Jesus Christ for pardon and cleansing from sin, and
follow good works pleasing and acceptable in His sight.
Prevenient Grace—Nazarene ManualWe believe that all persons, though in
the possession of the experience of regeneration and entire sanctification, may fall from grace and apostatize and,
unless they repent of their sins, be hopelessly and eternally lost.
The Holy Spirit Convinces Us of Sin
The Holy Spirit Offers Us the Gift of Grace
1 Peter 2:9-12 NIV
9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people
belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of
darkness into his wonderful light. 10
Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have
received mercy.
1 Peter 2:9-12 NIV
11 Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he
visits us.
The Holy Spirit Gives Us the Gift of Salvation through Jesus Christ
The Holy Spirit Gives Us the Power to Be Victorious
1 Peter 1:13-16 NIV
13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your
hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. 14 As
obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived
in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy,
so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I
am holy.”
God’s Desire Is for Us to Choose Him (Free Will)
Romans 6:1-7 NIV
1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his
death?
Romans 6:1-7 NIV
4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order
that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father,
we too may live a new life.
Romans 6:1-7 NIV
5 If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also
be united with him in his resurrection. 6
For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— 7
because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.
