Sizing Tips: Choose size based on child’s measurements, which may be different than size typically worn. Choose size closest to child’s chest, waist, and hip measurements (if between sizes, choose larger size), and check finished measurements to determine need to lengthen or shorten.
To lengthen or shorten bodice or skirt: Cut bodice/skirt pattern pieces along dotted line. To lengthen, spread pieces apart desired amount and tape piece of paper between lengthened pieces to hold in place. To shorten, overlap pieces desired amount and tape together.

Alternately, bodice and skirt pattern pieces are nested to easily lengthen/shorten pieces. Without changing width at bottom of piece, extend or raise hemline to larger or smaller size.

Tips For Sewing With Knits• Always use a ballpoint needle. Unlike a regular needle, the tip is rounded rather than sharp, and will go between the fabric
fibers without cutting through them.• Use either a stretch stitch or a long (2.5-3mm) and narrow (0.7-1mm) zig zag stitch to allow the seams to stretch with the
finished garment.• Do not stretch or pull the fabric as you sew. Allow the feed dogs to guide the fabric through.• If you have a serger, use it! The photos in this pattern demonstrate the steps without the use of a serger, but a serger is
a great way to both stitch a seam and finish the seam allowance in one step. The stretch in serged stitches is perfect for knits.
• A walking foot is not necessary, but helpful to feed both layers of fabric evenly and prevent unnecessary stretching.• Finishing seam allowances is not necessary, as raw edges will not fray or unravel.• When topstitching, a stretch twin needle is a great tool and looks very professional.• Wooly nylon used in the bobbin (hand wound onto the bobbin) is helpful to give added strength and stretch to seams,
especially when using a twin needle.• Always press seam allowances with steam after stitching. Test on scrap fabric to find the ideal heat setting for your iron and
fabric.• If the knit fabric looks stretched out of shape after stitching, press with steam to help the fabric spring back into place.• Reduce the tension of your machine’s presser foot to help reduce stretched seams.• Spray starch helps prevent edges from curling up, especially with lightweight knits.• Wondertape may be your best friend! It is a double sided tape that will wash out, and does not gum up your needle. It is
especially useful on hems, as it keeps the fabric perfectly in place without the use of pins.
Use of Clear Elastic:• Although optional, clear elastic adds stability to a waistline, especially with lightweight or fabrics that do not have ideal
stretch recovery.• Before using clear elastic, stretch it gently several times to remove excess stretch. Cut elastic equal length to the edge of
the fabric it will be stabilizing.• Do not stretch the elastic during stitching.• Use a teflon presser foot to help the elastic slide smoothly through machine, OR place masking or Scotch tape on the bottom of
the presser foot, trimming around the edges of the foot with a small craft knife.

1. Right sides together (RST), stitch bodice front and bodice back together at shoulders.
4. Clip seam allowance along neckline/facing and understitch seam allowance to facing, close to stitch line. (This will help facing lay nicely in place on inside of bodice).
5. Turn facing to inside of neckline and press flat. Topstitch around entire neckline (use twin needle or coverstitch if desired), 1/4” from edge. Baste facing to sleeve opening on each side, 3/8” from edge of each sleeve opening (to secure in place while attaching sleeves).
6. Turn bottom of each sleeve 1/2” to wrong side and stitch in place (use twin needle or coverstitch if desired).
2. Attach front and back neck facing interfacing pieces to wrong side of front and back neck facing fabric pieces together following manufacturer instructions. RST, stitch front and back neck facing pieces together along short ends.
3. RST, pin neck facing to neckline, matching raw edges and shoulder seams. Stitch facing to neckline around entire pinned edge.
Note: Stretch is important to allow neck opening to fit over head - if not using serger, it may be necessary to widen zig zag stitch slightly to allow more stretch for steps 3-5.
seam allowances 1/2” unless otherwise noted
optional: Baste entire edge of facing to bodice (close to raw edge of facing) to secure in place while attaching sleeves. Remove basting stitches after step 8.
Pretty in Peplum Dress & Top Pattern ©2014 Sew Much Ado
9
7. RST, pin each sleeve curve to each sleeve opening, matching raw edges and sleeve center notch with shoulder seam (stretch sleeve opening to fit sleeve curve). Stitch along pinned edge. Facing will be caught in seam along top of sleeve.
10. Press outer edge of peplum 1/2” to wrong side and topstitch in place (use twin needle or coverstitch if desired).
11. RST, pin bottom raw edge of bodice to inner raw edge of peplum, matching notches on peplum with notches and side seams of bodice. Stitch peplum to bodice along pinned edge, stretching peplum slightly to fit bodice.
Note (dress only): If making dress and using serger, do not trim seam allowance while stitching peplum to bodice (it will be trimmed when attaching skirt in step 12).
Optional (top only): Stitch clear elastic into seam when stitching bodice to peplum, keeping left side of elastic 1/2” from raw edges as pictured. See page 7 for tips on use of clear elastic.
8. Repeat step 7 with remaining sleeve and sleeve opening.
Tip: If top of shoulder seams are bulky due to facing, trim seam allowance to reduce bulk.
9. Turn bodice wrong side out. Match and pin raw edges of each sleeve and bodice side seams. Stitch from hem of sleeve to bottom of bodice on each side.
If making a top: congrats, you are
finished!
Pretty in Peplum Dress & Top Pattern ©2014 Sew Much Ado
10
13. RST, pin top of skirt to bottom of bodice, matching raw edges (peplum will be sandwiched between bodice and skirt), side seams, and notches. Stitch along pinned edge. Congrats, you are finished!

14. Press bottom of skirt 1” toward wrong side (see note below) and stitch in place (use twin needle or coverstitch if desired).
Note: Although 1” hem allowance is given, it is important to try dress on to achieve desired length. Reduce or increase hem allowance as needed.
12. RST, pin skirt pieces along side edges, matching notches. Stitch along pinned edges, forming tube.
Optional: Stitch clear elastic into seam when stitching bodice to skirt, keeping left side of elastic 1/2” from raw edges as pictured below. See page 7 for tips on use of clear elastic.
